Lindsey Vonn Not Ready to Decide on Future After Serious Olympic Injury
Lindsey Vonn says she is still focusing on her recovery and is not yet emotionally prepared to determine whether she will return to competitive skiing following the devastating injuries she suffered at the Winter Olympics.

The 41-year-old skiing icon has endured a long and difficult rehabilitation process since crashing during the women’s downhill event on February 8. The accident resulted in a severe fracture to her left leg, an injury so serious that doctors were at one stage concerned about the possibility of losing the limb. Since then, Vonn has undergone eight surgeries and is expected to have at least one more procedure to repair a torn ACL in the same knee.
Speaking about her future, Vonn explained that she is deliberately avoiding making any firm decisions. She said she does not want to speculate about whether she will compete again, stressing that retirement remains a possibility. At the same time, she is not ruling out another comeback. For now, she believes it is too early to make such an important choice while she is still processing everything that has happened.
Even if she eventually decides to race again, Vonn indicated that a return to competition would not happen anytime soon. Based on her recovery timeline, any comeback would likely be at least 18 months away.
Before the crash, Vonn had been enjoying an impressive return to the sport after ending a six-year retirement. One of the main motivations behind her comeback was the opportunity to race again in Cortina, Italy, a venue she has always enjoyed and one of the key locations for the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
Her comeback season had been remarkably successful. A three-time Olympic medalist and downhill champion from 2010, Vonn was performing at an elite level once again. She entered the Olympics leading the World Cup downhill standings and had not finished lower than fourth place in any race that season.
However, her Olympic campaign ended almost immediately when she crashed just seconds after leaving the start gate. The incident resulted in a complex tibia fracture and abruptly halted what had been one of the strongest stretches of her career.
Although Vonn has overcome numerous injuries throughout her career, including major knee problems that required a titanium implant in her right knee, she described this latest injury as unlike anything she had experienced before. The severity of the damage, combined with the realization that she nearly lost her leg, made it far more challenging than previous setbacks.
Despite the difficulties, Vonn is continuing to make progress. Recovery has been slower than she would prefer, but she is gradually regaining mobility. She has moved on from using a wheelchair and is now relying on crutches. The next major milestone in her rehabilitation will be taking short walks on her own, something she hopes to begin in the near future as she continues working toward recovery.
