Middlesbrough advised to steer clear of a ‘cheap’ transfer from Sunderland.
Middlesbrough Looking Ahead After Another Championship Heartbreak
Middlesbrough are preparing for another season in the Championship after a dramatic and emotional end to their 2025/26 campaign. While there were many positive moments throughout the season, the Teesside club ultimately fell short of achieving promotion to the Premier League.
The campaign was one of significant highs and crushing lows. Middlesbrough spent large portions of the season looking like genuine automatic promotion contenders, only for a dip in form during the closing months to derail those ambitions.
With preparations now underway for the new season, attention has quickly shifted toward recruitment and squad planning. Among the transfer topics being discussed is the possibility of re-signing Alan Browne, but one Middlesbrough supporter believes the club should resist any temptation to bring the experienced midfielder back to the Riverside Stadium.
Kim Hellberg’s First Season Brings Promise and Frustration
The 2025/26 season saw major changes at Middlesbrough. Rob Edwards began the campaign in charge but departed midway through the season after accepting an opportunity to become manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
His exit prompted Middlesbrough to turn to former Hammarby coach Kim Hellberg, who quickly made a positive impression.
The Swedish manager adapted rapidly to life in English football and initially transformed Middlesbrough into one of the Championship’s most impressive teams. Under his leadership, the club climbed to the summit of the table and remained there until the middle of February.
Supporters were beginning to dream of automatic promotion, with Hellberg earning praise for his tactical approach and ability to improve performances across the squad.
However, football can be unforgiving, and Middlesbrough’s momentum eventually faded. Results became increasingly inconsistent as the season progressed, causing the club to slide down the standings.
What once appeared to be a realistic push for automatic promotion eventually became a battle to secure a place in the play-offs. Middlesbrough ultimately finished fifth in the table, ensuring they would have to take the long route to the Premier League.
Dramatic Play-Off Journey Ends in Disappointment
Middlesbrough’s play-off campaign was anything but straightforward.
Their semi-final clash against Southampton produced plenty of drama. After a fiercely contested tie, Middlesbrough were eliminated following extra time in the second leg at St Mary’s Stadium.
At that point, it appeared their season was over.
However, a remarkable twist followed. Due to the controversial “spygate” incident that emerged after the tie, Middlesbrough were reinstated into the play-off final, receiving an unexpected second chance to secure promotion.
The unusual circumstances reignited belief among supporters, who hoped the club could take advantage of the opportunity.
Unfortunately, their Wembley dream ended in heartbreak once again.
In the final, Middlesbrough faced Hull City in a contest that remained finely balanced until the closing moments. Just when extra time or penalties appeared likely, Oli McBurnie struck a dramatic late winner.
His goal secured promotion for Hull City and condemned Middlesbrough to another year in the Championship.
The defeat was particularly painful given the manner in which it occurred, leaving players, staff and supporters devastated.
Alan Browne’s Future Becomes a Talking Point
As the summer transfer window gathers momentum, discussions surrounding Middlesbrough’s transfer strategy have intensified.
One player whose future has become a subject of debate is Alan Browne.
The Republic of Ireland international spent the previous season on loan at Middlesbrough from Sunderland after joining the club shortly following Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs.
Browne arrived with significant experience, having previously established himself as a respected figure at Preston North End before moving to Sunderland.
During his time at Middlesbrough, he provided versatility, leadership and a dependable option in several positions.
While his contributions were appreciated by many supporters, not everyone believes he should return permanently.
Fan Pundit Believes Middlesbrough Must Aim Higher
FLW Middlesbrough Fan Pundit Liam Day has expressed doubts about the idea of bringing Browne back to the club.
According to Day, Middlesbrough should focus on signings that move the squad forward rather than revisiting players who have already shown their level.
While acknowledging Browne’s professionalism and experience, Day questioned whether the midfielder possesses the quality required to help Middlesbrough achieve promotion next season.
In his view, the Irishman performed adequately but never consistently demonstrated the level needed to become a key figure in a promotion-winning side.
Day argued that although Browne enjoyed some strong performances, those moments were relatively rare throughout the campaign.
He believes that Middlesbrough should use the summer transfer window as an opportunity to improve the overall standard of the squad rather than settling for familiar faces.
Concerns Over Value and Long-Term Progress
Another factor influencing Day’s opinion is the financial aspect of a potential deal.
He acknowledged that Browne could likely be acquired for a relatively modest fee compared to other transfer targets. However, he questioned whether that would represent the best use of the club’s resources.
According to Day, even if the transfer proved inexpensive, Middlesbrough could potentially invest those wages and funds in players with greater upside or higher technical quality.
He stressed that making affordable signings should not be the primary objective if the club truly wants to progress.
Instead, Middlesbrough should identify players capable of elevating the team and fitting into Hellberg’s long-term vision.
Day also suggested there are alternatives available on the market, including players within a similar age bracket who could offer more consistent performances and greater overall quality.
Squad Evolution Considered Essential
The Middlesbrough supporter believes squad evolution is essential if the club is to take the next step.
In his view, several departures already point toward a strategy focused on refreshing the group.
He highlighted the exits of players such as Alex Gilbert, Sammy Silvera and potentially Alan Browne as examples of opportunities to create room for stronger additions.
Rather than retaining players who have already shown their limitations, Day feels Middlesbrough should target footballers capable of significantly improving the team.
For a club with Premier League ambitions, simply maintaining the status quo may not be enough.
Instead, recruitment decisions must be driven by quality and long-term development.
Hellberg Expected to Shape the Squad
The upcoming season will be Kim Hellberg’s first full campaign as Middlesbrough manager, giving him a valuable opportunity to build a squad that reflects his preferred style of football.
One of the most impressive aspects of his debut season was his ability to work with players who were not necessarily recruited specifically for his system.
Despite inheriting a group assembled under different circumstances, Hellberg managed to implement many of his ideas and achieve impressive results.
Now, with greater influence over recruitment, he could be given the freedom to reshape the squad according to his own vision.
That process may involve significant changes during the summer transfer window.
Middlesbrough Already Making Moves
The rebuilding process has already begun.
Several experienced and established players have left the club following the conclusion of the season.
Goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin has departed, while Darragh Lenihan, Dan Barlaser, Alex Gilbert, Sam Silvera and Marcus Forss have also moved on.
Forss spent the previous campaign on loan with Bolton Wanderers, helping the club secure promotion through the League One play-offs.
At the same time, Middlesbrough have acted to strengthen the squad.
Jeremy Sarmiento, who impressed after arriving on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion during the January transfer window, has completed a permanent move to the Riverside.
His signing is expected to be only the beginning of a busy summer.
Browne Likely to Leave Sunderland
Although Browne remains under contract with Sunderland until 2027, his future at the Stadium of Light appears uncertain.
Sunderland are preparing for life in both the Premier League and the UEFA Europa League, and significant squad changes are anticipated.
As a result, Browne is widely expected to move on permanently this summer.
His versatility remains one of his strongest attributes. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated the ability to operate in central midfield, attacking midfield and even in wider areas when required.
However, despite those qualities and his useful contribution during his loan spell, Middlesbrough may ultimately decide to pursue more ambitious targets.
Given that Browne started only 26 league matches before featuring in the play-off final against Hull City, decision-makers could conclude that the club’s future lies elsewhere as they seek stronger options capable of delivering promotion.
