Former Dundee and Dunfermline defender signs for Hearts and sets a record transfer fee for his previous club.
Hearts have strengthened their squad with the signing of defender Malachi Fagan-Walcott, bringing the former Dundee and Dunfermline player to Tynecastle on a four-year contract.

The 24-year-old centre-back arrives from York City after Hearts agreed a substantial transfer package with the English club. The deal is understood to be worth a high six-figure sum, making it the biggest player sale in York City’s history.
York City confirmed the significance of the transfer by describing it as a “club record selling fee,” highlighting the value Fagan-Walcott generated during his time with the National League promotion winners. His departure marks the end of a successful spell at the club, where he established himself as one of their most important players.
For Hearts, the signing represents another key addition during a busy summer recruitment drive. Fagan-Walcott becomes the fifth new arrival at Tynecastle as the Edinburgh club continues to reshape its squad ahead of the new campaign.
The defender’s football journey began in the academy system at Tottenham Hotspur, where he was regarded as a promising young talent. He progressed through the ranks in North London and eventually earned an opportunity to make history with the club.

In March 2020, under the management of legendary coach Jose Mourinho, Fagan-Walcott made his senior debut for Tottenham in a UEFA Champions League round-of-16 encounter against German side RB Leipzig. The appearance came just one day before his 18th birthday and made him Tottenham’s youngest player at the time to feature in the competition.
Although opportunities with Spurs’ first team were limited after that breakthrough moment, the experience provided an important platform for his development. He continued his progression through a series of loan moves designed to provide valuable senior football.
One of those spells brought him to Scotland, where he first joined Dundee on loan in January 2021. Then-manager James McPake moved to secure the young defender’s services from Tottenham, hoping he could strengthen the squad during the second half of the season.
Unfortunately, Fagan-Walcott’s time at Dens Park was disrupted almost immediately. After making just two appearances for Dundee, he suffered a hamstring injury that forced him to return to his parent club earlier than expected. The setback limited his ability to make a lasting impact, but it did not end his connection with Scottish football.
Several years later, the defender returned north of the border when he reunited with McPake at Dunfermline Athletic. By that stage, both player and manager were eager to make up for lost time following their brief spell together at Dundee.
The move proved beneficial for all parties. Fagan-Walcott became an important figure for Dunfermline, making 15 appearances and contributing three goals from defence. His performances demonstrated both his defensive qualities and his ability to influence matches in attacking situations.
Following his departure from Tottenham, Fagan-Walcott joined Cardiff City before eventually securing a permanent move to York City. The transfer followed a successful loan spell that convinced the club to invest in him on a long-term basis.
His time at York would prove to be the most productive period of his career so far. Over two seasons, the defender developed into a key player and a fan favourite, consistently delivering strong performances at the heart of the defence.
In total, he scored an impressive 14 goals in 79 appearances for the Minstermen, an excellent return for a central defender. His contributions at both ends of the pitch helped York establish themselves as one of the strongest teams in the division.
The 2025-26 campaign ended on a particularly high note as Fagan-Walcott played a major role in helping York City secure promotion back to League Two. His leadership, defensive reliability and goal-scoring threat were all important factors in the club’s successful season.
Now, after helping York achieve their objective, he takes the next step in his career with a move to the Scottish Premiership. Hearts believe they are acquiring a defender who combines physical presence, experience and potential, despite still being only 24 years old.
Fagan-Walcott joins a growing list of summer arrivals at Tynecastle. He follows fellow recruits Calvin Miller, MJ Kamson-Kamara, Josh McPake and Amadou Ba-Sy through the door as Hearts continue their rebuilding process.
The club’s transfer activity is also expected to continue, with a deal for French midfielder Tom Renaud reportedly close to completion. Should that move be finalised, it would add further depth and quality to Hearts’ squad ahead of the new season.
For Fagan-Walcott, the move represents another significant milestone in a career that has already included experiences at Tottenham, Dundee, Dunfermline, Cardiff and York City. Having helped York earn promotion and generate a record transfer fee, he now has the opportunity to establish himself in the Scottish Premiership and make his mark at Hearts.
Supporters will hope the defender can replicate the form that made him such an influential figure at York and justify the sizeable investment made to bring him to Edinburgh.
