Rams Looking to Build on Impressive Championship Campaign

Derby County enjoyed a significantly stronger season than many anticipated and now head into the summer transfer window determined to continue their upward trajectory under John Eustace.

At the start of the 2025/26 campaign, most supporters would have gladly accepted an eighth-place finish in the Championship. After all, the Rams had only narrowly preserved their second-tier status the previous year, surviving relegation on the final day of the season.

Eustace arrived with a clear objective: transform Derby from a side battling at the bottom of the table into one capable of challenging near the play-off positions. Although the season began in disappointing fashion, with just one victory from their opening ten league matches, the manager ultimately succeeded in delivering substantial progress.

By the time the final day arrived, Derby were still mathematically in contention for a play-off place. While Hull City’s win over Norwich City ultimately ended those hopes before the Rams could take advantage, the campaign nevertheless represented a major step forward.

The improvement in results was matched by a growing sense of unity within the squad. Eustace succeeded in creating a positive team spirit and has openly discussed his desire to bring several of last season’s loan players back to Pride Park.

One player high on that wish list is Southampton forward Ben Brereton Diaz, whose contribution during his loan spell made him a popular figure among supporters.

Derby Remain Interested in Bringing Back Brereton Diaz

Brereton Diaz arrived at Derby on loan from Southampton and became an important part of the attacking group alongside players such as Patrick Agyemang, Rhian Brewster and Bobby Clark.

The Chile international made a valuable contribution throughout the campaign, scoring seven goals and providing three assists across 40 Championship appearances.

His performances helped strengthen Derby’s attack and played a role in the club’s push towards the play-off places.

Eustace has already made it clear that he would welcome the opportunity to work with the forward again.

Speaking about the possibility of a return, the Derby manager acknowledged that Brereton Diaz is likely to attract attention from several clubs but expressed hope that the positive environment at Pride Park could work in Derby’s favour.

According to Eustace, the club worked hard to make the player feel comfortable and valued throughout his loan spell. He believes that connection could prove important if discussions about another move take place during the summer.

The forward has also spoken warmly about his experience at Derby.

Brereton Diaz explained that choosing Derby when the opportunity arose was an easy decision due to the club’s reputation, passionate support and positive conversations with the manager.

He admitted he thoroughly enjoyed his time at Pride Park and was pleased with the decision to join the Rams on loan.

Those comments have naturally fuelled optimism among supporters that another deal could still be possible.

Alternative Options Must Also Be Considered

Despite Derby’s desire to secure Brereton Diaz once again, there remains no guarantee that a move will happen.

Competition from other clubs, financial considerations and Southampton’s own plans could all complicate negotiations.

For that reason, Derby’s recruitment team should ensure alternative targets are identified and pursued if necessary.

One player who could emerge as an intriguing option is Manchester United youngster Shea Lacey.

Although signing the highly-rated teenager would involve a degree of risk, the potential rewards could be enormous.

Shea Lacey Has Emerged as One of Manchester United’s Brightest Talents

Lacey has earned an excellent reputation throughout his development within Manchester United’s academy system.

The 19-year-old winger has consistently impressed coaches with his technical quality, creativity and confidence in possession.

His progress was rewarded in December 2025 when he made his senior debut for Manchester United.

Despite only receiving a brief cameo appearance, the youngster displayed maturity and composure beyond his years, offering a glimpse of the talent that has generated excitement around Old Trafford.

Primarily operating on the right side of attack, Lacey thrives when cutting inside onto his stronger left foot.

His dribbling ability is regarded as one of his biggest strengths, allowing him to beat defenders in one-on-one situations and create opportunities in dangerous areas.

During his limited first-team appearances, he has already demonstrated the confidence and technical skill required to compete at a high level.

First-Team Football Is the Logical Next Step

As talented as Lacey may be, opportunities at Manchester United could prove difficult to come by next season.

The club already possess several established attacking options capable of operating on the right wing.

Players such as Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Patrick Dorgu are all likely to be ahead of Lacey in the pecking order, making regular first-team involvement difficult.

As a result, a loan move appears the most sensible solution for both player and club.

A temporary spell away from Old Trafford would allow Lacey to gain valuable experience in senior football while continuing his development in a competitive environment.

Championship football has often provided an ideal platform for talented young players to mature, and Derby could represent an excellent destination.

Why Derby Could Be the Perfect Fit

A move to Pride Park would give Lacey the opportunity to follow a path similar to former Manchester United academy graduate Jesse Lingard, who benefited significantly from loan spells during the early stages of his career.

Under Eustace, Derby have demonstrated a willingness to trust young players and provide opportunities for emerging talent.

The manager’s tactical approach could also suit Lacey particularly well.

Whether deploying traditional wingers or wing-backs, Eustace values players capable of carrying the ball, creating chances and offering attacking unpredictability.

Those qualities align closely with Lacey’s strengths.

While he would not be a direct replacement for Brereton Diaz, his impact could potentially be even greater if he adapts quickly to Championship football.

The teenager’s creativity, flair and ability to unlock defences offer a different dimension to Derby’s attack.

Although there would naturally be an element of uncertainty surrounding any move for a player with limited senior experience, the upside makes the gamble an attractive one.

Tactical Flexibility Adds to His Appeal

One of the reasons Lacey could thrive at Derby is his versatility.

Towards the end of last season, Eustace shifted away from a back-three system and increasingly favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation.

That adjustment allowed players such as Burnley loanee Jaydon Banel to play influential roles in attacking areas.

While it remains unclear whether Eustace will continue with the same formation next season, the change highlighted his willingness to adapt tactically when required.

Lacey would fit comfortably into several different systems.

Although he is most effective on the right wing, he has also shown an ability to operate in more central attacking positions.

His technical qualities and creativity mean he could be used as an attacking midfielder when circumstances demand.

That flexibility would provide Derby with additional options across the front line and increase his overall value to the squad.

A Calculated Gamble Worth Taking

There is no doubt that pursuing Lacey would involve a degree of risk.

Unlike Brereton Diaz, he has not yet established himself at Championship level and remains relatively inexperienced in senior football.

However, the teenager possesses enormous potential and appears ready for the next stage of his development.

For Derby, securing a player of that calibre could prove to be a masterstroke.

If a return for Brereton Diaz ultimately proves impossible, turning attention towards one of Manchester United’s brightest prospects may be the smartest alternative available.

The gamble would be significant, but the potential rewards could be even greater as Derby look to build on last season’s progress and mount an even stronger challenge in the Championship.
