For many Blackburn fans, Williams will always be remembered as an important member of the squad that helped guide the club back to the Championship following their spell in League One. His commitment, leadership and consistency made him a favourite among supporters, while his contribution on the pitch helped the club achieve one of its key objectives during a significant period in its recent history.
A Memorable Spell at Blackburn Rovers
Williams enjoyed several successful years at Blackburn after arriving at the club and quickly establishing himself as a dependable presence in defence.
During his time at Ewood Park, he made a total of 152 appearances across all competitions and scored six goals. While his primary responsibility was to help keep opposition attacks at bay, he also contributed at the other end of the pitch, chipping in with important goals throughout his spell with the club.
His most notable achievement came when Blackburn secured promotion from League One back to the Championship. The campaign represented an important turning point for the club, and Williams played a significant role in helping Rovers bounce back at the first opportunity.
His performances during that period earned him the admiration of supporters, many of whom viewed him as one of the key figures in the promotion-winning side.
As a result, he became something of a cult hero among the Blackburn fanbase, remembered not only for his defensive displays but also for the passion and commitment he showed whenever he wore the club’s colours.
Journey Beyond Ewood Park
Williams eventually departed Blackburn in March 2021 after several productive years with the Lancashire outfit.
Following his exit, he continued his playing career overseas, moving to Major League Soccer in the United States. The switch offered him a new challenge and the opportunity to experience football in a different environment.
He spent four years in North America before eventually making a return to England.
His final club proved to be Reading, where he finished his playing career after coming back from the United States. Although his time there marked the closing stages of his professional journey, it allowed him to continue competing at a high level before ultimately deciding the time was right to step away from the game.
Having reflected on his career and future ambitions, Williams has now confirmed that he is retiring from professional football.
Emotional Farewell Message
The defender used social media to share a heartfelt message announcing his decision.
In a lengthy post, Williams expressed gratitude to everyone who had played a role throughout his football journey, including family members, coaches, teammates, medical staff and supporters.
Reflecting on his career, he described himself as fortunate to have achieved his dream of becoming a professional footballer and acknowledged the experiences the game had provided him over the last 16 years.
Williams wrote:
“After 16 special years, it now feels the right time for me to retire from football.
“I have been lucky enough to live out my dream. Hundreds of games, travelled all around the world, ups and a lot of downs. I am just grateful for it all.”
His comments highlighted both the rewards and challenges that come with a career in professional sport.
Like many players, Williams experienced moments of success and disappointment, but he made it clear that he remains thankful for every stage of the journey.
Appreciation for Staff and Coaches
The former defender also paid tribute to the many managers, coaches and medical professionals who helped him throughout his career.
Footballers often receive the majority of the attention, but Williams was keen to acknowledge the work carried out behind the scenes by those who contributed to his development and wellbeing.
He said:
“To the managers, coaches and physios I have had throughout my career, a lot of hard work goes in behind the scenes and I appreciate it all. Thank you.”
The message reflected his appreciation for the support network that exists around professional players and the important role those individuals play in helping footballers perform at their best.
Special Memories With Teammates
Williams reserved some of his warmest words for the teammates he encountered throughout his career.
Having spent more than a decade and a half in professional football, he built strong relationships and friendships along the way. He explained that the memories created with teammates would remain among the highlights of his time in the game.
He wrote:
“To my old teammates along the way, I have been lucky enough to have met some great people and made some memories I will never forget.”
The defender then reflected on the everyday aspects of football that he expects to miss most.
While supporters often focus on matchdays, trophies and major occasions, Williams revealed that many of his favourite memories came from the daily routine of training alongside teammates.
He admitted that the camaraderie, competition and shared experiences on the training ground would be the parts of football he misses most after retirement.
Missing the Training Ground
Williams spoke candidly about the elements of professional football that brought him the greatest enjoyment.
He highlighted the warm-up routines, dressing-room conversations, training exercises and competitive atmosphere that players experience every day.
According to the former Blackburn defender, these moments often create the strongest bonds between teammates and help build the environment that supporters rarely get to see.
He explained:
“I know the thing I will miss the most and that is all the sessions out on the training ground with you all.
“The warm-ups, chatting, the rondos, the fitness runs, the small-sided games, but most of all the competitiveness.”
For Williams, the constant challenge of competing against teammates in training sessions was one of the most rewarding parts of being a professional footballer.
He added that the daily battle to improve and push one another helped shape his career and made football so enjoyable.
“Challenging each other and pushing each other every day,” he wrote.
Those words offered a glimpse into the mentality that helped him maintain a professional career for more than 16 years.
Looking Ahead to a New Chapter
While Williams confirmed that his playing days are now over, he admitted that he has not yet decided exactly what the next phase of his life will involve.
However, he made it clear that he is looking forward to discovering new opportunities and embracing fresh challenges away from the pitch.
Despite stepping into unfamiliar territory, the former defender remains determined to apply the same attitude and commitment that defined his football career.
He concluded his message by saying:
“I don’t know what the next chapter will hold as of yet but I am excited for what’s to come.
“And all I know is I will approach it like I approached my football career. All in and roll with the punches.”
End of a Memorable Career
Williams leaves football with plenty to be proud of.
From achieving promotion with Blackburn Rovers to competing in different countries and building lasting relationships throughout the game, his career was filled with memorable moments and valuable experiences.
Supporters at Blackburn, Reading and elsewhere will remember him as a committed professional who always gave his best for the teams he represented.
While his playing days have now come to an end, his contribution to the clubs he served will not be forgotten, and many will wish him every success as he begins the next chapter of his life away from professional football.
