Middlesbrough targets a £9m Aston Villa star, aligning with Kim Hellberg’s preferences.
Middlesbrough’s summer transfer business has only just begun, but Aston Villa forward Lewis Dobbin has already emerged as one of the club’s most intriguing targets.
Although Jeremy Sarmiento has completed a permanent switch after initially arriving on loan, Boro are yet to officially unveil a completely new signing during this transfer window. That is expected to change soon, and Dobbin has become one of the strongest names linked with a move to the Riverside Stadium.
The winger is attracting interest from several Championship clubs. Sheffield United and Preston North End have both been credited with monitoring his situation, but Middlesbrough are now believed to be firmly involved in the race and pushing to convince the Aston Villa attacker to make the move to Teesside.
After spending last season on loan at Preston, Dobbin significantly enhanced his reputation with a series of eye-catching displays. His ability to contribute consistently in the final third has placed him on the radar of clubs looking to strengthen their attacking options before the new Championship campaign begins.
For Middlesbrough, the attraction is obvious.
Kim Hellberg inherited a side capable of dominating possession and creating opportunities, but one that too often lacked the clinical edge required to convert that superiority into victories.
Dobbin appears to offer exactly the type of profile capable of addressing that issue.
A Career Beginning to Gather Momentum
Despite still being only 23 years old, Dobbin has already accumulated valuable experience across several Championship clubs.
The former Everton academy graduate joined Aston Villa during the summer of 2024 in a deal reportedly worth around £9 million, underlining how highly he was rated following his development on Merseyside.
Since then, Villa have allowed him to continue his progress through a series of loan spells.
Temporary moves to West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City provided useful experience but neither produced the consistent impact many expected.
Everything changed during his spell at Preston North End.
Operating primarily as an attacking midfielder and left-sided forward, Dobbin enjoyed by far the most productive campaign of his senior career.
He finished the season with 19 goal involvements across all competitions, a tally that no Preston player managed to surpass.
Those numbers immediately attracted attention throughout the Championship.
For a player still approaching his peak years, producing that level of output in a side that often struggled collectively demonstrates significant potential.
It also explains why multiple clubs now believe he could become a valuable long-term investment.
Why Middlesbrough View Him as an Ideal Fit
Dobbin’s style of play appears particularly well suited to what Kim Hellberg is attempting to build at Middlesbrough.
Although naturally comfortable on the left flank, he also showed considerable effectiveness when deployed centrally as a number ten during his time at Preston.
That tactical flexibility would provide Hellberg with additional options throughout a demanding Championship season.
The Swedish coach values technical players capable of operating between defensive lines while also possessing enough pace to threaten opposition defences in transition.
Dobbin appears to satisfy each of those requirements.
His direct running, willingness to take on defenders and improving decision-making in the final third make him an attractive option for a team hoping to play expansive, attacking football.
Just as importantly, he remains young enough to continue developing.
At only 23, Middlesbrough would not simply be signing a player ready to contribute immediately.
They would also be investing in someone whose best football could still lie ahead.
With Dobbin contracted to Aston Villa until the summer of 2028, however, any permanent deal is unlikely to come cheaply.
Villa invested around £9 million to secure his signature and will understandably hope to recover a substantial proportion of that fee if they decide to sanction his departure.
That could make negotiations complicated.
Nevertheless, Middlesbrough’s reported determination suggests they believe the investment would be worthwhile.
Supporters Believe He Would Improve the Squad
Middlesbrough supporters also appear encouraged by the links.
Speaking about the possible transfer, fan pundit Liam Day admitted he would welcome the signing if an agreement could be reached at a sensible price.
He believes Dobbin stood out despite playing for what he described as a relatively average Preston side.
Producing such impressive numbers in a team that often struggled collectively only strengthens the argument that the winger possesses genuine quality.
Day also highlighted Dobbin’s versatility as one of his biggest strengths.
Being capable of operating across multiple attacking positions would give Hellberg greater tactical flexibility while providing healthy competition throughout the forward line.
Although he admitted he had not watched every Preston match, Day felt Dobbin possessed several characteristics that perfectly match what the Middlesbrough head coach is looking for.
His pace, technical ability and willingness to take defenders on all make him an appealing option.
There was, however, one slight concern.
Dobbin has experienced several injury setbacks during previous seasons, and there were occasions at Preston where he regularly left matches around the hour mark.
While that could raise questions regarding his durability, Day believes it should not discourage Middlesbrough from pursuing the transfer.
Instead, he considers it a manageable issue rather than a major warning sign.
Provided the financial package remains reasonable, he feels Dobbin would represent an excellent addition to the squad.
His age only adds further appeal.
At 23, he has plenty of time to improve while already demonstrating the quality required to influence Championship matches.
Should Middlesbrough complete the deal, Day believes it would represent an extremely positive beginning to the club’s summer recruitment.
Hellberg Needs Greater Cutting Edge
Kim Hellberg deserves considerable praise for the impact he has already made since arriving at Middlesbrough.
The Swedish coach quickly implemented an attacking philosophy that transformed the team’s overall style of play.
Statistics underline just how effective that approach became.
Following his appointment in November, no Championship side created more shooting opportunities than Middlesbrough.
The team regularly dominated possession, progressed the ball effectively and consistently worked themselves into promising attacking positions.
Compared to the tactical approach previously employed under Rob Edwards, Middlesbrough looked far more structured and inventive when building attacks.
Unfortunately, one major weakness continued to undermine those encouraging performances.
The inability to convert chances into goals repeatedly cost Boro valuable points throughout the season.
Despite creating opportunities at an impressive rate, they lacked the ruthlessness needed to capitalise on their dominance.
That ultimately proved decisive.
Automatic promotion slipped away before Middlesbrough suffered the disappointment of defeat in the Championship play-off final.
For a side capable of controlling so many matches, their lack of efficiency in front of goal became impossible to ignore.
As a result, improving the attacking department has become one of the club’s biggest priorities this summer.
Recruiting players capable of consistently turning chances into goals is essential if Middlesbrough hope to mount another promotion challenge.
Dobbin Would Be an Excellent Starting Point
Lewis Dobbin alone will not completely solve Middlesbrough’s attacking problems.
No single signing realistically could.
However, he appears capable of making an immediate and significant contribution.
His development over the past season suggests he is becoming increasingly composed in the final third, while his improved productivity demonstrates growing confidence in attacking situations.
For a Middlesbrough side searching for greater creativity and efficiency, those qualities are extremely valuable.
Adding Dobbin would immediately provide more pace, greater tactical flexibility and another genuine goal threat.
Even so, Middlesbrough’s recruitment should not end there.
Further additions across the attacking positions will almost certainly be required if Hellberg wants sufficient depth to compete across a long Championship campaign.
Competition for places often raises standards throughout a squad, and Boro will need several players capable of contributing goals consistently rather than relying on one individual.
Nevertheless, securing Dobbin would represent a strong first step.
He combines youth with Championship experience, possesses significant room for improvement and already has evidence of producing goals and assists at this level.
If Aston Villa are prepared to negotiate and Middlesbrough can reach an acceptable agreement, the move could prove one of the smarter pieces of business completed during the Championship transfer window.
For Hellberg, whose side desperately need greater quality in attacking areas, Dobbin looks exactly like the profile of player capable of helping transform Middlesbrough from promotion contenders into genuine favourites.
While additional reinforcements would still be necessary, bringing the Aston Villa forward to the Riverside could provide the perfect foundation for another serious push towards the Premier League.
