Middlesbrough transfer news: Kim Hellberg nearing a £5m move.
Middlesbrough are edging ever closer to completing their first major signing of the summer, with the club reportedly on the verge of agreeing a deal worth around £5 million for Hull City striker Kyle Joseph.
The move would provide head coach Kim Hellberg with his first new arrival ahead of his first full season in charge at the Riverside Stadium, as Boro continue preparations for another Championship promotion push.

Talks between Middlesbrough and Hull City have been progressing for some time, and negotiations are now believed to have reached an advanced stage.
Boro have admired Joseph for a considerable period and identified the striker as one of their priority attacking targets during this transfer window. Having now submitted an offer, the Teesside club appear to have made the breakthrough required to move the transfer towards completion.
If everything proceeds as expected, the deal could be finalised within the next 48 hours.
The transfer would not only strengthen Middlesbrough’s forward options but also assist Hull City as they attempt to comply with the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play regulations before an important financial deadline.
Hull find themselves under pressure to balance their accounts before the current three-year assessment period concludes on June 30.
As a result, player sales have become an important part of the club’s financial planning despite their recent success on the pitch.
Middlesbrough, meanwhile, are eager to capitalise on the situation by securing a striker they believe can improve their attacking department ahead of another demanding Championship campaign.
Last season ended in disappointment for Boro after defeat to Hull City in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.
That result denied Middlesbrough promotion to the Premier League while sending Hull into the top flight under Sergej Jakirovic.
Now, Boro are looking to respond positively by strengthening key areas of the squad before competitive action resumes.
Adding another proven forward has become one of the club’s priorities as Hellberg continues shaping the squad according to his tactical philosophy.
Although Hull are reluctant to lose Joseph, Middlesbrough’s proposal is understood to be attractive enough to convince the Tigers to consider a sale.
The striker played an important role throughout Hull’s successful promotion campaign, making his potential departure a difficult decision for the club.
However, financial considerations appear likely to outweigh footballing concerns.
According to reports from Hull Live, the offer submitted by Middlesbrough is valued at approximately £5 million and is now close to being accepted.
The transfer would represent a significant profit for Hull.
Joseph only joined the Tigers from Blackpool in January last year in a deal worth around £2.5 million.
Just eighteen months later, Hull stand to receive roughly double that figure should the move to Middlesbrough be completed.
That financial return could prove extremely valuable given the club’s current obligations under Financial Fair Play regulations.
Despite earning promotion to the Premier League and the substantial financial rewards that accompany it, Hull still need to remain compliant with the league’s spending rules.
Promotion is expected to generate revenues exceeding £200 million through television income, commercial opportunities and other financial distributions.
Even so, the timing of the three-year accounting cycle means immediate player sales remain necessary before the June deadline.
Joseph’s departure appears set to become one of the consequences of those financial realities.
For Middlesbrough, however, the circumstances present an opportunity to recruit a player entering the prime years of his career.
The 24-year-old has continued to develop steadily and possesses valuable Championship experience.
Across his time with Hull City, Joseph made 65 appearances in all competitions.
During those matches, he scored eight goals while also contributing five assists, demonstrating his ability to both finish opportunities and create chances for teammates.
His contributions proved particularly valuable during Hull’s successful promotion campaign.
One of his most recent goal involvements came during the Tigers’ victory over Sheffield Wednesday in March, highlighting his importance during the closing stages of the season.
Although his overall goal tally may not appear spectacular, Hull valued his work rate, movement and ability to contribute within the team’s attacking structure.
Those qualities are believed to have attracted Middlesbrough’s recruitment team as they continue identifying players capable of fitting Hellberg’s style of football.
The Swedish head coach is expected to prioritise energetic forwards who can press aggressively while also providing attacking quality inside the final third.
Joseph appears well suited to those demands.
Unfortunately, his season ended on a disappointing personal note.
The striker suffered an ankle injury during Hull City’s Championship play-off semi-final victory over Millwall, ruling him out of the Wembley final against Middlesbrough.
His absence represented a significant blow for the Tigers, given his importance throughout the campaign.
Although unable to participate on the pitch, Joseph remained heavily involved with his teammates during the celebrations after Hull secured promotion.
He joined the squad following the final whistle and celebrated on the Wembley pitch despite requiring crutches because of his injury.
The images highlighted both his popularity within the dressing room and the role he played throughout the club’s successful season.
Should the proposed transfer be completed, Middlesbrough supporters will hope Joseph can quickly recover full fitness before the new campaign begins.
His arrival would provide Hellberg with another attacking option as the club attempts to build a squad capable of challenging for automatic promotion rather than relying on the play-offs once again.
The potential signing also reflects Middlesbrough’s determination to strengthen early in the transfer window.
By completing important business before pre-season gathers momentum, Hellberg will have valuable time to integrate new players into his tactical system and establish partnerships ahead of another demanding Championship campaign.

With negotiations now reaching their final stages, Middlesbrough appear increasingly confident that Kyle Joseph could become the club’s first major addition of the summer.
If the £5 million agreement is completed as expected, Boro will not only strengthen their attacking department but also send a clear signal that they intend to mount another serious challenge for promotion to the Premier League during the upcoming season.
