RB Leipzig have stepped up their pursuit of Burnley centre-back Maxime Estève, with reports indicating that the Bundesliga side have already opened discussions over a potential move for the French defender.

The 24-year-old has emerged as one of Leipzig’s leading defensive targets during the current transfer window. According to reports from Onze Mondial, the German club have been closely monitoring Estève’s performances and believe he possesses the qualities required to strengthen their back line ahead of the new campaign.

Leipzig are understood to admire several aspects of the Burnley defender’s game. His composure on the ball, ability to initiate attacks from deep, and confidence in one-on-one defensive situations have made him an attractive option as the club looks to reshape its defence this summer.

Sources cited by Onze Mondial claim that communication between the player’s representatives and Leipzig is already underway. While no agreement has been reached at this stage, Estève is said to be firmly established on the Bundesliga club’s shortlist as they evaluate defensive reinforcements.

A move to Germany could appeal to the Frenchman, who reportedly wants to continue progressing at the highest level. Following Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League last season, Estève is believed to feel that the time is right to pursue a fresh challenge elsewhere in Europe.

Despite Burnley’s difficult campaign, the defender remained one of the club’s most dependable performers. He featured in 36 Premier League matches, establishing himself as a regular starter and demonstrating consistency against top-flight opposition throughout the season.

Those performances have not gone unnoticed. Clubs across Europe have reportedly kept tabs on the former France Under-21 international for several months, with growing interest reflecting the reputation he has built since arriving at Turf Moor.

Leipzig’s recruitment team reportedly views Estève as an excellent tactical fit. The club are searching for a naturally left-sided central defender who is comfortable operating in possession while also possessing the defensive awareness and athleticism needed to compete at the highest level.

His ability to contribute during the build-up phase, combined with his defensive reliability, aligns closely with Leipzig’s preferred style of play. As the Bundesliga side continue to overhaul their defensive options, Estève is considered a player capable of making an immediate impact.

Reports also suggest that the defender himself is eager to take his career in a different direction. He believes a move away from Burnley would provide the opportunity to continue his development and compete in a new environment.

The player’s representatives are aware that interest extends beyond Germany. Several clubs have reportedly followed Estève’s progress over an extended period, meaning Leipzig could face competition if they decide to formalise their interest with an official offer.

Burnley, meanwhile, are not believed to be ruling out a summer sale. According to the reports, the Championship club are prepared to listen to offers for the defender if a suitable proposal arrives.

Although no specific asking price has been disclosed, Burnley reportedly remain confident that Estève has maintained a strong market value despite the club’s relegation. His performances over the past season have helped preserve his reputation, ensuring there is still considerable demand for his services.

Transfermarkt currently estimates the defender’s value at around €28 million, providing an indication of the level of investment required to secure his signature. Burnley are also in a strong negotiating position because Estève remains under contract until 2030, leaving the club under no immediate pressure to sell.

That lengthy contract could allow Burnley to demand a significant transfer fee before sanctioning any departure. Unless an offer meets their valuation, the club have little reason to rush into a deal.

Leipzig are not the only club showing interest in the French defender. Earlier reports highlighted Turkish champions Galatasaray as another potential destination, with the Istanbul side also monitoring his situation during the transfer window.

As a result, Leipzig may have to move decisively if they wish to secure Estève ahead of rival suitors. Competition from elsewhere in Europe could increase if negotiations continue without a swift breakthrough.

For now, discussions appear to be at an early stage, but Leipzig’s interest is described as genuine and significant. The Bundesliga outfit regard Estève as a serious candidate to reinforce their defence, while the player himself is reportedly open to embracing a new challenge after Burnley’s return to the Championship.

With the transfer window progressing and interest continuing to build, the coming weeks could prove decisive in determining whether Estève remains at Turf Moor or completes a move to Germany. Burnley are willing to consider offers, Leipzig have already begun talks, and other clubs remain in the race, setting the stage for one of the Clarets’ most closely watched transfer stories of the summer.
