Aaron Hayden has completed a move to Hednesford Town, beginning a new chapter in his career after spells with Wrexham and Carlisle United. The experienced central defender joins the recently promoted National League North side, bringing with him a wealth of experience and an impressive record of success earned during his time in North Wales.

Hayden first arrived at Wrexham in the summer of 2021 after leaving Carlisle United. His signing proved to be an important addition to Phil Parkinson’s squad as the club pursued promotion back to the English Football League. From the outset, the defender established himself as a key member of the team, combining his defensive qualities with an eye for goal that made him a valuable threat from set-pieces.

During his debut campaign at the Racecourse Ground, Hayden made 39 appearances in all competitions and scored seven goals. His performances helped Wrexham enjoy another strong National League campaign, with the club progressing all the way to the play-off semi-finals. Although promotion ultimately eluded them that season, Hayden’s consistent displays ensured he became a regular figure in Parkinson’s starting eleven.

The following campaign saw Hayden continue his impressive form. Throughout the opening half of the 2022-23 season, he remained one of Wrexham’s most dependable performers and developed an even greater reputation for scoring crucial goals from defence. By the middle of January, the centre-back had already reached 11 league goals, an outstanding return for a player in his position and one that highlighted both his aerial ability and attacking instincts.

Unfortunately, his excellent season came to an abrupt end because of injury. Hayden suffered a calf problem during Wrexham’s dramatic 3-3 draw against Sheffield United in the fourth round of the FA Cup in January 2023. The injury proved serious enough to rule him out for the remainder of the campaign, preventing him from playing any further part as Wrexham completed their long-awaited return to the Football League by winning the National League title.

Although he was unable to contribute on the pitch during the final months of that memorable season, Hayden had already made 26 appearances before his injury and played a significant role in helping the club establish the foundations for their championship-winning campaign. His absence was undoubtedly a blow, but Wrexham ultimately secured promotion after producing one of the most successful seasons in the club’s recent history.

Injuries continued to affect Hayden after Wrexham returned to League Two for the 2023-24 campaign. Fitness problems limited his opportunities throughout the season, restricting him to just 16 league appearances. Despite those setbacks, he still managed to make an important contribution whenever selected.

One of his standout moments came in the fiercely contested derby away to Tranmere Rovers, where Hayden scored the only goal of the match to secure a valuable 1-0 victory for Wrexham. It was another reminder of his ability to influence games at both ends of the pitch despite enduring another frustrating campaign interrupted by injury.

As the season progressed, Hayden eventually regained full fitness and was available during the closing weeks of the campaign. Wrexham finished as runners-up in League Two, securing a second consecutive promotion and earning their place in League One. The achievement marked another major milestone for both the club and Hayden, who had now been involved in back-to-back promotion-winning squads under Phil Parkinson.

Following the conclusion of the season, Wrexham decided not to extend Hayden’s stay, bringing an end to his successful three-year spell at the Racecourse Ground. Across all competitions, the defender made 94 appearances for the club and scored an impressive 20 goals, an exceptional return for a centre-back. His contribution both defensively and offensively ensured he remained a popular figure among supporters during one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history.

After departing Wrexham, Hayden returned to Carlisle United, the club he had previously represented before moving to North Wales. His second spell with the Cumbrians lasted two seasons before another opportunity emerged elsewhere. Having now left Carlisle once again, the experienced defender has chosen to continue his career with Hednesford Town.

Hednesford earned promotion to the National League North at the end of last season and are strengthening their squad ahead of the new campaign. Hayden’s arrival provides the club with a player who possesses extensive experience across the Football League and National League, while also offering leadership qualities and a proven ability to contribute goals from defensive positions.

Meanwhile, another former Wrexham defender has also completed a transfer this summer. Curtis Tilt has joined Burton Albion after leaving League One rivals Bradford City for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Tilt, now 34 years old, originally signed for Wrexham from Hednesford Town in June 2016. During his time with the Welsh club, he made 36 appearances in the National League and scored one goal before leaving the Racecourse.

His departure began with a loan move to Forest Green Rovers in April 2017. After completing that temporary switch, Tilt left Wrexham permanently later that year to join Blackpool, where he continued his career in the English Football League.

Subsequent spells followed with Rotherham United, Wigan Athletic and Salford City before he spent last season at Bradford City. Although Bradford enjoyed a competitive campaign, they ultimately fell short of promotion after suffering disappointment in the League One play-offs.

Now, with Burton Albion securing his services, Tilt embarks on another challenge, while Hayden also begins a fresh chapter at Hednesford Town. Both defenders move forward with significant experience behind them, but it is Hayden’s remarkable journey from Wrexham promotion hero to Hednesford’s newest signing that stands out as he looks to help his latest club build on their recent success in the National League North.
