Former Celtic striker Junior Adamu officially announced as a new Schalke player.
Former Celtic forward Junior Adamu has officially completed a permanent move to Schalke, with the Austrian international expressing confidence that the transfer will provide the ideal platform to revive his career and rediscover the goalscoring form that has largely eluded him in recent seasons.
The 24-year-old arrives at the German club following his departure from Freiburg after an underwhelming spell that included a loan stint with Scottish champions Celtic. Although his time in Glasgow did not unfold as many supporters had hoped, Adamu believes the fresh start at Schalke offers him the perfect opportunity to prove his quality once again.

Adamu joined Celtic on loan with expectations that he would strengthen Brendan Rodgers’ attacking options during the campaign. The striker arrived with experience at both club and international level, and there was optimism that he could provide healthy competition for places in the Hoops’ forward line. However, despite receiving opportunities throughout the season, he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter and found it difficult to make a lasting impression in domestic league competition.
His biggest disappointment came in the Scottish Premiership, where he was unable to register a single league goal despite featuring in several matches. While he displayed flashes of his athleticism and willingness to stretch opposition defences, consistent end product proved difficult to achieve, limiting his overall influence during his spell at Celtic Park.
Although league goals never materialised, Adamu did manage to produce one unforgettable moment in Celtic colours. His only goal for the club arrived in dramatic circumstances during the Scottish Cup against Dundee. Deep into stoppage time, with Celtic facing the prospect of a shock elimination, the striker found the net with a crucial equaliser that forced the tie into extra time. That late intervention ultimately kept Celtic’s hopes of lifting another domestic trophy alive and ensured his contribution would be remembered despite an otherwise difficult campaign.
The dramatic strike highlighted Adamu’s ability to deliver in important moments, even if opportunities were limited. Nevertheless, his lack of regular goals meant he never truly secured a consistent place in Brendan Rodgers’ starting lineup.
Throughout his time at Celtic, the Austrian international started only two Scottish Premiership matches. Most of his appearances came from the substitutes’ bench, making it difficult for him to build momentum or establish rhythm in front of goal. Competition for attacking positions remained fierce, and Adamu was unable to force his way ahead of the club’s preferred striking options.
After returning to Freiburg following the conclusion of his loan spell, it quickly became apparent that another move would offer the best solution for both player and club. Schalke subsequently emerged as his next destination, providing him with the opportunity to begin a new chapter at one of Germany’s most historic football clubs.
The move also reunites Adamu with head coach Miron Muslic, a manager he has previously worked under. That existing relationship played an important role in convincing the striker that Schalke represented the right environment to rebuild his confidence and return to his best form.
Following confirmation of the transfer, Adamu spoke enthusiastically about the opportunity awaiting him at Schalke and revealed his excitement at joining a club with such a rich history and passionate fanbase.
He admitted that completing the move was a proud moment in his career and described his arrival as a special feeling. According to the striker, representing a club of Schalke’s stature is a major source of motivation as he prepares for the challenges ahead.
Adamu also outlined the qualities he believes he can bring to his new side. He described himself as a forward who thrives on making intelligent runs behind opposition defences, creating dangerous situations inside the penalty area and consistently finding goalscoring opportunities. Those attributes, he hopes, will allow him to become an important attacking option as Schalke prepare for the new Bundesliga season.
The Austrian international believes his pace, movement and instincts inside the box remain among his greatest strengths. While his recent goalscoring record may not fully reflect those qualities, he is convinced that regular opportunities and renewed confidence will enable him to demonstrate his true ability once again.
Another aspect of Schalke that immediately impressed Adamu was the remarkable level of support shown by the club’s supporters. He revealed that seeing large numbers of fans attend training sessions reinforced his belief that he had joined a club with extraordinary tradition and passionate backing.
The striker admitted that witnessing such enthusiasm from supporters created an emotional response, underlining just how significant the transfer feels at this stage of his career. Experiencing that atmosphere, even before playing a competitive match, strengthened his excitement about representing Schalke.
Adamu explained that his decision to choose Schalke was influenced by several important factors. In addition to the club’s stature and ambitions, he felt the overall project matched his own career objectives. The familiarity with head coach Miron Muslic also gave him additional confidence that he would be joining an environment capable of helping him succeed.
Having previously worked together, Adamu believes the manager understands both his strengths and the style of football that best suits him. That mutual understanding could prove valuable as the striker attempts to regain the consistency that earned him recognition earlier in his career.
The former Celtic loanee also described the emotional impact of arriving at Schalke, admitting that simply being part of the club had given him goosebumps. Those comments reflected both his appreciation of Schalke’s history and his determination to make the most of this fresh opportunity.
Now entering a new phase of his career, Adamu will hope the move marks the beginning of a successful resurgence. While his spell at Celtic was largely remembered for frustration and limited opportunities, he departs with at least one memorable contribution that helped preserve the club’s Scottish Cup campaign.
Schalke, meanwhile, will be hoping they have secured a striker capable of rediscovering the goalscoring touch that once made him one of Austria’s most promising attacking talents. With a manager who knows his qualities, a passionate fanbase behind him and a fresh challenge in front of him, Adamu now has the chance to prove that his difficult spell in Scotland does not define the next chapter of his career.
