Southampton and Hull City compete to sign the explosive forward.
Southampton Turn Attention to Summer Reinforcements
Southampton are determined to move on from the disappointment and controversy that overshadowed the end of last season by assembling a squad capable of challenging for promotion once again. The Saints are edging closer to securing their first major signing of the summer, but the recruitment drive appears far from complete as the club targets another attacking addition.

Having already identified Aston Villa winger Lewis Dobbin as a key target, Southampton are now reportedly focusing their attention on Werder Bremen forward Justin Njinmah. The Bundesliga attacker has emerged as a serious option as the Saints continue reshaping their frontline ahead of another Championship campaign.
However, landing the German will not be straightforward, with Hull City also pushing to secure his signature. The competition between the two clubs is expected to intensify over the coming weeks as both sides look to strengthen their attacking departments before the new season begins.
A Strong Finish Was Overshadowed by Controversy
Southampton’s performances during the second half of last season gave supporters every reason to believe promotion was within reach. The Saints put together an outstanding run of 19 unbeaten Championship matches, earning a place in the play-offs and establishing themselves as one of the favourites to secure promotion at Wembley.
Unfortunately, those hopes were dramatically dashed away from the pitch.
The club was expelled from the play-offs after being found guilty of spying on opposing teams, an incident that quickly became one of the biggest talking points of the Championship season. The investigation concluded that the operation had been orchestrated by head coach Tonda Eckert, who remains under scrutiny and could still receive a six-month suspension for his involvement.
The ruling meant Southampton missed their opportunity to fight for Premier League promotion despite their excellent form on the field.
As a result, St Mary’s will once again host Championship football this season, with everyone connected to the club eager to leave the controversy behind and focus entirely on achieving promotion through footballing success.
Lewis Dobbin Move Nearing Completion
Southampton have already made encouraging progress in the transfer market, with Lewis Dobbin appearing close to becoming their first signing of the summer.
The winger is expected to join from Aston Villa in a deal worth around £9 million plus performance-related add-ons. His arrival would provide additional pace, directness, and creativity in wide positions, strengthening a squad that is undergoing significant changes following last season.
Dobbin’s signing is viewed as an important first step in rebuilding Southampton’s attack, but club officials are clearly not planning to stop there.
The recruitment department continues to explore further attacking options, with Justin Njinmah now emerging as one of their priority targets.
Several Changes Already Made in Attack
Southampton’s forward line has already experienced considerable turnover this summer.
Veteran striker Ross Stewart has departed after failing to agree terms on a new contract, bringing an end to his time at St Mary’s. Meanwhile, Cyle Larin’s temporary spell has been converted into a permanent transfer, ensuring the Canadian international remains part of Eckert’s plans moving forward.
Elsewhere, Damion Downs and Ben Brereton Diaz have both returned to Southampton after completing their respective loan spells.
Downs arrived from FC Köln for approximately £7 million last summer but struggled to establish himself in the first team. After limited opportunities on the south coast, he spent the second half of the campaign on loan with Hamburg.
Whether the young forward still has a future at Southampton remains uncertain, and another move away cannot be ruled out before the transfer window closes.
Brereton Diaz also faces an uncertain future despite enjoying a productive loan spell with Derby County. His performances away from St Mary’s may have improved his confidence, but it remains unclear whether he fits into Eckert’s long-term plans.
Cameron Archer Could Also Leave
Further attacking departures may still take place before the start of the new campaign.
Cameron Archer is widely expected to move on after his proposed permanent transfer to Rangers collapsed during the January transfer window. The Scottish club came close to completing the deal, but negotiations ultimately broke down before an agreement could be finalised.
Should Archer leave this summer, Southampton will require additional depth in attack, making the pursuit of players like Dobbin and Njinmah even more important.
Strengthening multiple areas across the frontline appears to be a key objective as Eckert prepares his squad for another demanding Championship season.
Justin Njinmah Emerges as a Key Target
According to reports from Germany, Southampton have identified Werder Bremen forward Justin Njinmah as a player capable of improving their attacking options.
German publication BILD claims the Saints are interested in bringing the versatile attacker to England this summer. However, Hull City are also pursuing the 25-year-old, creating a competitive battle for one of the Bundesliga’s exciting forwards.
Njinmah has built valuable experience since returning permanently to Werder Bremen in 2023 after progressing through the youth systems at Holstein Kiel, Werder Bremen, and Borussia Dortmund.
Since rejoining Bremen, he has made 88 appearances across all competitions, scoring 14 goals while contributing six assists.
Although those statistics may not immediately stand out, his performances have demonstrated qualities that extend beyond goals and assists, particularly his pace, movement, and relentless work ethic.
Premier League Interest Shows His Growing Reputation
Njinmah has already attracted attention from clubs outside Germany.
Reports suggested that Serie A champions Napoli were interested in signing him during the January 2026 transfer window. Although that move ultimately failed to materialise, the speculation highlighted the growing reputation the forward has built through his performances in the Bundesliga.
Now, England could become his next destination.
Both Southampton and newly promoted Premier League side Hull City are monitoring the situation closely as they evaluate whether to make formal offers for the Bremen attacker.
With interest increasing, the coming weeks could prove decisive in determining where the German continues his career.
Why Southampton Want Njinmah
One of Njinmah’s biggest strengths is his versatility.
The German is capable of playing anywhere across the front line, whether as a central striker, right winger, or left-sided attacker. That flexibility would provide Eckert with several tactical options throughout the season.
His explosive acceleration, willingness to press defenders, and dangerous counter-attacking ability make him particularly attractive for Southampton’s style of play.
Last season, Eckert frequently relied on quick transitions and high-energy attacking football, and Njinmah’s attributes appear well suited to that approach.
Adding another pacey forward would also reduce the team’s dependence on individual players while increasing competition for starting places.
Following a Growing German Trend
If Njinmah completes a move to St Mary’s, he would continue Southampton’s recent trend of recruiting talent from Germany.
Last summer the club brought in Damion Downs, Joshua Quarshie, Leo Scienza, and Caspar Jander from German football.
Each player has experienced differing levels of success since arriving in England, but Southampton’s continued interest in Bundesliga talent suggests the recruitment department remains confident that the German market offers excellent value and quality.
Njinmah would become another player expected to adapt successfully to English football while strengthening the Saints’ promotion ambitions.
Bremen Open to Selling This Summer
Despite Njinmah remaining under contract with Werder Bremen until 2028, reports indicate that the Bundesliga club are willing to negotiate a transfer if they receive what they consider to be a reasonable offer.
That willingness to sell has encouraged both Southampton and Hull City to pursue the player this summer.
Hull may have the advantage of Premier League football to present during negotiations, but Southampton remain optimistic that they can persuade the forward to choose St Mary’s instead.
The club believe their long-term project, regular playing opportunities, and ambition to secure an immediate return to the top flight could prove decisive factors.
Eckert Focused on Building a Promotion-Winning Squad
While uncertainty still surrounds Tonda Eckert’s potential suspension following the spying controversy, preparations for the new season continue at full speed.
The Southampton manager remains focused on strengthening his squad before pre-season reaches its conclusion.
Dobbin’s anticipated arrival will already provide another exciting attacking option, while the addition of Justin Njinmah would significantly increase the team’s pace, versatility, and attacking threat.
At 25 years old, the Werder Bremen forward combines valuable top-level experience with plenty of room for further development.
If Southampton can successfully beat Hull City to his signature, they may secure one of the Championship’s most exciting additions of the summer and take another important step towards putting last season’s controversy behind them with a genuine promotion challenge.
