Lawrence Shankland has spoken publicly for the first time about the contract clause that allowed him to leave Hearts and complete a highly controversial move to Rangers without generating a transfer fee.

The Scotland international’s switch from Tynecastle to Ibrox shocked supporters across Scottish football, particularly Hearts fans, who believed their captain had committed his future to the Edinburgh club after signing a new long-term contract only a year earlier.

Instead, Shankland exercised an exit clause that enabled him to terminate his agreement and complete his dream move to Rangers, where he has signed an initial two-year contract.

The striker has now lifted the lid on the circumstances surrounding his departure, admitting that joining the club he supported as a boy was simply an opportunity he could not reject.

Hearts Supporters Were Left Stunned

When Hearts announced that Shankland had signed a fresh three-year contract, supporters celebrated what they believed was one of the club’s biggest pieces of business.

Keeping hold of their captain was viewed as a significant statement of intent, particularly with Derek McInnes preparing to begin his tenure as manager.

Fans expected Shankland to remain the focal point of Hearts’ ambitions over the coming seasons.

However, what many supporters were unaware of was a clause included within the agreement that gave the striker the opportunity to leave under certain circumstances after just one year.

That contractual detail remained largely out of the public eye until Rangers came calling.

Once the opportunity arose, Shankland activated the clause, bringing his time at Tynecastle to an abrupt end and allowing him to move to Glasgow without Hearts receiving a transfer fee.

The decision understandably sparked anger among many Hearts supporters, who felt blindsided by the situation.

Shankland Discusses the Contract Clause

While speaking after linking up with his new Rangers teammates during the club’s pre-season training camp in Spain, Shankland acknowledged the existence of the clause but chose not to reveal every detail.

He explained that the agreement had been a private matter between himself and Hearts and therefore preferred not to discuss the finer points publicly.

Nevertheless, he confirmed that the clause existed and had been designed to facilitate a move should the right opportunity present itself during his contract.

According to Shankland, the agreement was never exclusively linked to Rangers.

Instead, it allowed both the player and Hearts to work together if an attractive transfer opportunity emerged in the future.

Once he informed Hearts that he wanted to complete the move to Rangers, the process became straightforward.

He indicated that there were no major complications after making his intentions clear, with both parties able to complete the transfer efficiently.

Rangers Dream Too Good to Ignore

Shankland admitted that deciding to leave Hearts was not a decision taken lightly.

He stressed that signing his previous contract had been an important moment in his career and insisted he had genuinely been pleased to extend his stay with the Edinburgh side at the time.

Every contract, he explained, carries significance because it provides security while also reflecting the trust placed in a player by his club.

However, he also acknowledged that every footballer possesses ambitions to continue progressing throughout their career.

For Shankland, Rangers represented the destination he had always hoped to reach.

Growing up as a Rangers supporter, playing at Ibrox had remained one of his biggest personal ambitions.

He revealed that after extending his Hearts contract, he understood another strong season would be required if he hoped to earn an opportunity with Rangers.

That motivation drove him to continue improving, believing that performing consistently would eventually attract interest from the Glasgow club.

When the opportunity finally arrived, he felt it represented the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition.

Ambition Drives Every Footballer

The striker insisted that wanting to move to a bigger club should never be viewed negatively.

He believes ambition is a natural characteristic shared by professional footballers, with every player striving to challenge themselves at the highest possible level.

Shankland explained that his desire to join Rangers stemmed from that mentality rather than dissatisfaction with Hearts.

He maintained that footballers constantly seek opportunities to improve their careers, compete for honours, and play on larger stages.

Joining Rangers offered all of those possibilities.

For him, the transfer was about achieving a personal goal that had existed long before the move became realistic.

He described himself as delighted to have finally secured the chance to represent the club he had supported throughout his childhood.

Hearts Title Heartbreak Already Behind Him

Shankland’s departure came only days after Hearts suffered a devastating end to their league title challenge.

The Edinburgh club travelled to Celtic on the final day of the season still dreaming of ending a 66-year wait for the Scottish league championship.

Those hopes were ultimately dashed by Martin O’Neill’s side, leaving Hearts players and supporters deeply disappointed.

As captain, Shankland experienced that heartbreak first-hand.

However, he admitted that events have moved incredibly quickly since then.

Following the league finale, he joined Scotland’s squad for the World Cup before completing his transfer to Rangers and immediately reporting for pre-season training.

Because of that hectic schedule, he feels the disappointment surrounding Hearts’ title collapse has already become a distant memory.

He acknowledged that the defeat was painful at the time but insisted he has now moved on completely.

A Fresh Start at Ibrox

Having arrived at Rangers, Shankland believes he has entered an exciting new chapter of his career.

His first few days at the club have already been filled with activity.

He initially reported to Rangers’ training ground before immediately travelling with the squad to Spain for their pre-season camp.

The striker explained that such trips are always valuable because they allow new players to settle into unfamiliar surroundings while building relationships with teammates.

With several new signings arriving this summer, he believes spending time together away from Scotland will help strengthen team spirit before competitive fixtures begin.

Alongside the social aspect, the training camp also provides an opportunity for the squad to complete demanding fitness work ahead of the new season.

Shankland is embracing every part of that process as he prepares for life in a Rangers shirt.

Busy Summer Has Left Little Time to Reflect

The striker admitted he has barely had time to process everything that has happened over recent weeks.

His move to Rangers was quickly followed by international commitments with Scotland at the World Cup, leaving almost no opportunity for a proper break.

Despite the hectic schedule, he described the experience as thoroughly enjoyable.

Rather than feeling overwhelmed, he views the rapid changes as positive developments in his career.

Representing Scotland at the World Cup before joining Rangers are achievements he is proud of, and he recognises how fortunate he is to find himself in such a position.

Although the summer has been demanding physically and mentally, he believes the rewards have made every challenge worthwhile.

Determined to Win Major Honours

One of Shankland’s biggest motivations for joining Rangers is his desire to finally collect major trophies.

Throughout his career, the striker has experienced success in the lower divisions but has yet to win significant silverware at senior level.

That remains an important objective.

He fully understands the expectations placed upon players representing Rangers, where competing for domestic trophies every season is regarded as the minimum requirement.

Those ambitions align perfectly with his own.

Shankland believes both he and manager Derek McInnes share the same determination to deliver success for the club.

The opportunity to compete regularly for league titles and domestic cups played a major role in convincing him to make the move.

He views Rangers as the ideal environment to fulfil those ambitions.

Ready for the Next Chapter

Despite the controversy surrounding his departure from Hearts, Shankland has no regrets about the decision he made.

He accepts that some supporters remain disappointed by the manner of his exit but believes every professional footballer must make choices that benefit their career.

For him, joining Rangers represented the fulfilment of a lifelong dream while also providing the opportunity to challenge for major honours consistently.

Now fully focused on his future at Ibrox, Shankland is eager to contribute to Rangers’ ambitions in the coming campaign.

With pre-season preparations underway and expectations high, the Scotland international is determined to repay the faith shown in him by helping deliver the trophies that both he and Rangers supporters crave.
