Ex-Wrexham forward announces his retirement from professional football.

Former Wrexham striker Jason Oswell has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing the curtain down on a career that spanned 15 years and saw him represent clubs across England, Scotland and Wales.

The 33-year-old’s final club was Cymru Premier outfit Connah’s Quay Nomads, whom he joined ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. During his time with the Nomads, Oswell featured in 20 matches across all competitions and found the back of the net once.

Although he remained part of the squad during the domestic season, the experienced striker was absent from Connah’s Quay’s matchday selections throughout their UEFA Conference League qualifying campaign. Shortly afterwards, he confirmed his decision to step away from the professional game.

The announcement brings to an end a football journey that began with dreams of becoming a professional player and eventually took him through every level of British football.

Oswell enjoyed a career that included spells with several well-known clubs while earning a reputation as a hardworking forward capable of making an impact wherever he played. His experiences ranged from youth football to professional leagues, non-league competitions and European qualification campaigns.

Wrexham supporters will remember Oswell from his spell at the Racecourse Ground after he completed a move from Morecambe during the January transfer window in 2019.

The striker joined the Red Dragons for an undisclosed transfer fee as the club sought to strengthen its attacking options during the National League season.

Although his time at Wrexham proved relatively short, Oswell made 25 National League appearances for the club and scored three goals during his stay in North Wales.

Following the conclusion of his spell at Wrexham, Oswell departed the club in July 2020 to sign for Telford United, beginning the next chapter of his football career.

Before arriving at Wrexham, Oswell had already built up extensive experience across different levels of the British game.

His football journey began at Crewe Alexandra, where he progressed through the club’s youth system while developing his skills and pursuing his ambition of becoming a professional footballer.

After his time with Crewe, Oswell also experienced Scottish football during a brief spell with Inverness Caledonian Thistle, adding another chapter to a career that would eventually take him across multiple leagues and competitions.

One of the most successful periods of his career came in Wales with Newtown.

Between 2014 and 2017, Oswell established himself as one of the Cymru Premier’s most effective forwards, producing a series of impressive performances that significantly enhanced his reputation.

His goalscoring exploits with Newtown ultimately earned him a move to Stockport County, providing another opportunity to continue climbing the football pyramid.

Following his spell at Stockport, Oswell secured a transfer to Morecambe, where he continued competing in English football before eventually making the move to Wrexham in 2019.

After leaving the Red Dragons, the striker continued playing before joining Connah’s Quay Nomads ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Although injuries, competition for places and changing circumstances meant his final season proved challenging, Oswell still contributed 20 appearances for the Welsh club before deciding the time was right to retire.

Reflecting on his decision, Oswell expressed pride in everything he had achieved throughout his career.

He explained that, as a young boy, he always dreamed of becoming a professional footballer, and retiring knowing he had fulfilled that ambition gave him enormous satisfaction.

Looking back on his journey, he highlighted the many unforgettable experiences football had given him.

Oswell spoke about having the opportunity to play in memorable matches, visit famous stadiums and represent a number of respected clubs throughout his career.

He also reflected fondly on sharing dressing rooms and pitches with talented teammates, describing those relationships and experiences as memories he will cherish for the rest of his life.

The former striker was also keen to thank everyone who had supported him throughout his football journey.

He expressed gratitude to the teammates, coaches, staff members and supporters he encountered during his career, acknowledging that each of them had played a role in helping shape his experiences within the game.

Oswell reserved special appreciation for his family and friends, recognising the sacrifices and encouragement they provided from the very beginning of his football career.

He thanked them for their unwavering support over the years, admitting that he would never have achieved his dream without their constant belief and encouragement.

The striker also said he was grateful they had been able to share every stage of his football journey alongside him, from his early days as an aspiring youngster through to his retirement from the professional game.

Although Oswell’s playing career has now concluded, he leaves the sport with countless memories collected over a decade and a half of competing across Britain.

From academy football at Crewe Alexandra to spells in Scotland, England and Wales, and from non-league football to European qualification campaigns, his career reflected persistence, resilience and a genuine passion for the game.

For Wrexham supporters, he will remain one of many players who contributed during an important period in the club’s modern history before its remarkable rise through the divisions under new ownership.

While his time at the Racecourse Ground lasted only a season and a half, he represented the club with commitment and professionalism before moving on to continue his career elsewhere.

Now, after 15 years as a professional footballer, Jason Oswell has chosen to bring his playing days to an end, closing one chapter while looking ahead to whatever opportunities the future may bring beyond the pitch.
