Former Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimovic has once again grabbed attention after making a light-hearted remark about Celtic during an appearance at a major sports event in the United States, despite previously describing Celtic Park as the most incredible stadium atmosphere he had ever experienced.

The legendary striker, who enjoyed an illustrious career with clubs including Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and AC Milan, appeared before fans at Fanatics Fest in New York, where he entertained the audience with his trademark confidence and sense of humour.

Although Ibrahimovic has often spoken positively about his experiences in Glasgow, he could not resist teasing the Scottish champions while taking part in one of the event’s live sessions.

The 44-year-old retired football icon attended the third edition of Fanatics Fest, a multi-day celebration that attracts some of the biggest names in global sport. The festival brings together athletes, collectors and supporters through interviews, exhibitions, autograph sessions and interactive events, earning a reputation as one of the largest sporting fan conventions in the world.

Frequently compared to Comic-Con because of its blend of sports memorabilia, celebrity appearances and fan engagement, the festival gave Ibrahimovic another opportunity to showcase the charismatic personality that made him one of football’s most entertaining figures both on and off the pitch.

During one segment of the event, the former striker participated in a live question-and-answer session while opening packs of collectible sports trading cards in front of the audience.

While the elimination proved disappointing for Ibrahimovic and Ajax, the experience left a lasting impression on the young striker for reasons beyond the football itself.

The atmosphere created by the Celtic supporters inside Parkhead amazed him, with the noise and passion from the home crowd standing out even among the many famous stadiums he would later visit during his remarkable career.

Instead of experiencing the deafening atmosphere he had previously praised, Ibrahimovic found himself playing inside an empty Celtic Park, with the absence of supporters creating a completely different environment.

On that occasion, AC Milan produced an impressive display to defeat Celtic 3-1, beginning their Europa League group-stage campaign with an away victory in Glasgow.

The match also represented another personal milestone for Ibrahimovic.

By starting the fixture, he became AC Milan’s oldest outfield player to begin a European match since club legend Paolo Maldini, further highlighting the remarkable longevity that defined the final years of his career.

Even well into his late thirties, Ibrahimovic remained capable of performing at the highest level against elite opposition, continuing to break age-related records while competing in European competition.

His return to Glasgow may not have carried the same atmosphere that had left such a lasting impression almost twenty years earlier, but it nevertheless added another chapter to his long-running connection with Celtic.

Although his latest comments in New York were clearly intended as humour rather than criticism, they are likely to spark debate among Celtic supporters, many of whom still remember the glowing praise he once directed toward the club and its supporters.
