Queens Park Rangers have emerged as one of the clubs interested in Oxford United midfielder Brian De Keersmaecker following the U’s relegation from the Championship to League One at the end of last season.

Oxford’s current situation has become a major talking point, with the club operating under a temporary registration embargo. The restriction has been imposed under the EFL’s Salary Cost Management Protocol regulations and is affecting their ability to complete incoming transfer business.

Because of that financial backdrop, the possibility of a significant player sale has naturally been raised as a potential way of easing Oxford’s difficulties. Blackburn Rovers and QPR are among the clubs that could offer the League One side an opportunity to cash in on one of their most valuable assets this summer, although they are not the only teams in the race.

Interest in De Keersmaecker is understood to extend beyond England, with clubs from Serie A and the Bundesliga also monitoring the Belgian midfielder. The 26-year-old made 28 appearances for Oxford during the previous campaign and contributed two goals and five assists despite the club’s eventual relegation.

Football League World asked QPR fan pundit Louis Moir for his view on the links between the R’s and De Keersmaecker, and he made it clear that he would be delighted to see the Belgian arrive at Loftus Road.

Although Oxford endured a disappointing season overall, Moir believes De Keersmaecker was one of the few players who consistently stood out for positive reasons.

Asked whether QPR need another midfielder and whether the Oxford man would represent good value for money, Moir responded enthusiastically despite Oxford’s insistence that they do not intend to sell players while under the embargo.

He explained that he rates the midfielder very highly and feels he was a genuine standout performer for Oxford even in a campaign that ended in relegation.

Moir described De Keersmaecker as a proper box-to-box midfielder, pointing to his Championship experience, his age profile and the overall quality he brings to the pitch.

Midfield overhaul viewed as necessary

The supporter also argued that QPR’s midfield has been in need of major changes for some time.

In his opinion, Nicolas Madsen is currently the strongest midfielder at the club, but several other changes have already taken place. Sam Field has been sold, Isaac Hayden has departed, and Jonathan Varane could also leave amid reported interest from other clubs.

Kieran Morgan, meanwhile, is viewed as a player who would benefit from a loan spell, meaning another departure is also possible.

With all of that movement, Moir believes QPR may need to sign as many as two or three midfielders before the transfer window closes.

In that context, he feels De Keersmaecker would be an outstanding addition.

The blend of quality and physicality

According to Moir, the Belgian offers exactly the kind of attributes you want in a modern midfield player.

He believes a partnership involving Madsen and De Keersmaecker would provide a genuine blend of technical quality, creativity and physical presence.

Madsen would bring the creative side of the game, while De Keersmaecker’s ability to cover ground, compete physically and contribute in multiple phases of play would give the team a much stronger balance.

Moir emphasised that the Oxford midfielder is so naturally box-to-box that he can influence matches in a variety of ways, which is one of the main reasons he rates him so highly.

He added that if QPR were able to beat a large group of rival clubs to his signature, it would represent an exceptional piece of business.

Oxford’s financial position could help QPR

Another factor highlighted by the supporter was Oxford’s current financial situation.

Moir suggested that the registration embargo could create an opportunity for QPR to negotiate a deal at a lower fee than De Keersmaecker’s true market value.

If that proved possible, he believes it would make the signing even more attractive from QPR’s perspective.

He described the Belgian as a player who has already shown his quality at Championship level, has been consistently impressive and possesses the attributes required to become a top performer for the R’s.

Tactical flexibility would increase

One of the aspects Moir particularly likes is the tactical flexibility De Keersmaecker could provide.

QPR sometimes operate with two central midfielders and at other times use a three-man midfield, and the Belgian’s versatility means he could fit comfortably into either setup.

Moir feels that placing him alongside Madsen and another midfielder would give the squad excellent depth and allow the coaching staff to rotate without suffering a significant drop in quality.

For him, that combination of flexibility, consistency and all-round ability makes De Keersmaecker a genuinely exciting target.

Why QPR should prioritise the deal

Looking at the wider picture, De Keersmaecker appears to fit the profile of player QPR should be targeting this summer.

Julien Stephan’s side already have a number of exciting attacking players capable of causing problems for Championship defences, so the focus has increasingly shifted toward strengthening other key areas of the squad.

Goalkeeper was viewed as a major weakness, but the arrivals of Pierce Charles and Calum Ward are expected to address those concerns and provide greater competition between the posts.

As a result, the priority now is reinforcing the spine of the team.

De Keersmaecker would bring energy, composure and defensive discipline to the base of midfield, creating a stronger platform for QPR’s more attack-minded players to thrive.

More work still needed in defence

Midfield is not the only area where QPR are expected to strengthen.

The club would also benefit from signing another commanding, high-quality centre-back capable of adding greater steel, leadership and consistency to the defensive unit.

If the R’s can improve both central midfield and central defence, there is growing belief that they could become genuine contenders for a top-eight finish.

In a division as competitive as the Championship, where the margins between success and failure are often extremely small, strengthening those two areas could make a significant difference over the course of the season.

Encouraging start to the transfer window

The additions of Tariq Lamptey and Boy Kemper should provide more depth and quality in the full-back positions, but there is still a feeling that further reinforcements are required through the middle of the team.

Overall, though, it has been a positive start to the transfer window for QPR.

There is still plenty of time remaining before the deadline, and the club could yet add one or two loan signings that would further improve the squad.

For now, however, Brian De Keersmaecker is emerging as one of the most intriguing names on QPR’s shortlist, and supporters will be hoping the club can beat Blackburn and the other interested teams to secure the signature of the highly-rated Belgian midfielder.
