More cash will be required for this Championship club to sign a fringe Southampton star.

Cameron Archer’s time at Southampton appears to be nearing its conclusion, but any Championship club hoping to secure his signature this summer will likely have to increase their offer. Although the striker has struggled to establish himself since arriving at St. Mary’s, Southampton are not prepared to let him leave for a cut-price fee, believing there is still considerable value in a player who has previously demonstrated his quality in England’s second tier.

Archer joined Southampton in the summer of 2024 following the club’s promotion to the Premier League. The Saints invested heavily in the forward, paying around £15 million in the hope that he would become a key figure in their attack. Expectations were high after his promising performances elsewhere, but things never developed as planned on the south coast.

Instead of becoming the reliable goalscorer Southampton had hoped for, Archer endured a frustrating spell that saw him struggle for consistency. During his first Premier League campaign, he managed just two league goals despite making 35 appearances. The following season brought little improvement after the club dropped into the Championship, with the striker finding the net only three times while other attacking players assumed greater responsibility in front of goal.

As a result, Archer has scored only five league goals across two difficult seasons at Southampton, leaving both player and club seemingly ready to move in different directions this summer.

Despite those disappointing statistics, Archer continues to attract attention from Championship clubs that believe they can help him rediscover the form he showed earlier in his career. His age, previous record in the division, and untapped potential still make him an appealing option for clubs searching for additional firepower.

Among the clubs most strongly linked with the 24-year-old is West Bromwich Albion. The Baggies are in the market for attacking reinforcements following the departure of Josh Maja, leaving them eager to recruit an experienced striker capable of leading the line throughout the upcoming campaign.

A move to The Hawthorns would also appeal on a personal level for Archer. Born in Walsall, the striker would be returning closer to home if he joined West Brom, making the proposed transfer attractive beyond purely footballing reasons.

However, while interest from West Brom remains genuine, negotiations have yet to produce an agreement. Reports suggest there is currently a significant difference between Southampton’s asking price and the amount West Brom are prepared to pay.

Earlier in the transfer window, it was reported that West Brom submitted an offer worth approximately $5 million for Archer. Southampton, though, have shown little willingness to accept that valuation.

From Southampton’s perspective, rejecting the proposal is understandable. Having invested $15 million to sign Archer only two years ago, the club are reluctant to accept such a substantial financial loss, especially when they still believe the striker has the ability to rebuild his reputation elsewhere.

Although his spell at St. Mary’s has been disappointing, Southampton recognize that Archer’s struggles do not erase what he achieved before arriving at the club. His previous performances in the Championship demonstrated why he was once regarded as one of England’s most promising young forwards.

That earlier form continues to encourage interested clubs.

Before joining Southampton, Archer enjoyed productive loan spells with Middlesbrough and Preston North End, where he consistently troubled defenders with his pace, movement, and finishing ability. Across those spells, he scored an impressive 18 goals in just 40 Championship appearances, establishing himself as one of the division’s most dangerous attacking players.

Those performances convinced Southampton to make a significant investment in him, believing he could make the step up to Premier League football. While that gamble ultimately failed to deliver the desired results, many still believe Archer possesses the talent to thrive if placed in the right environment.

His reputation was strengthened by praise from respected managers who worked closely with him during his development.

While Archer was at Preston North End, manager Ryan Lowe described him as a “natural goalscorer,” highlighting the striker’s instinctive ability inside the penalty area and his confidence when presented with scoring opportunities.

Later, during his time at Middlesbrough, Michael Carrick also expressed his admiration for Archer, labeling him a “terrific” talent capable of making a major impact in the Championship.

Those endorsements remain important because they reinforce the belief that Archer’s recent struggles may be more about circumstances than ability.

Southampton themselves are fully aware of what the striker is capable of producing. That knowledge explains why they continue to maintain a firm negotiating position despite his disappointing record over the past two seasons.

Rather than accepting the first acceptable offer simply to reduce their wage bill, Southampton appear determined to maximize the value of any potential transfer. They know Championship clubs are familiar with Archer’s previous success and may eventually decide he is worth the financial gamble.

Whether West Brom are prepared to meet Southampton’s valuation remains uncertain.

Financial considerations have already affected the Baggies’ transfer business this summer. The club recently missed out on another target after reportedly being unwilling to match the asking price, allowing ambitious Wrexham to move ahead in the race for Danny Imray.

That situation raises questions over whether West Brom will be willing or able to significantly increase their offer for Archer.

If they choose not to do so, Southampton are unlikely to panic.

Reports indicate that Archer has attracted substantial interest from several Championship clubs, giving Southampton confidence that alternative buyers could emerge before the transfer window closes.

With multiple clubs monitoring the striker’s situation, the Saints believe patience may ultimately produce a better financial package than the one currently on the table.
