Southampton’s transfer negotiations reach a €20 million limit, with the club refusing to go beyond that amount.

Southampton could be heading towards a transfer stand-off with Benfica over Taylor Harwood-Bellis, with the Portuguese giants apparently unwilling to increase their current valuation of the defender.

The two clubs remain in discussions regarding a potential move for the Southampton captain, but Benfica have now established a clear financial limit.

According to Thursday’s print edition of Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Benfica are prepared to pay a maximum of €20 million, which is approximately £17.3 million, for the England international.

That figure could become a major stumbling block in negotiations, particularly because Southampton are unlikely to be enthusiastic about accepting a fee below what they paid to sign the centre-back permanently.

Benfica refuse to go beyond €20m

The latest update adds an important detail to the speculation surrounding Harwood-Bellis’ future.

Benfica clearly want to sign the 24-year-old, but they are not prepared to continue increasing their offer indefinitely in an attempt to reach Southampton’s valuation.
