Portuguese media report that Taylor Harwood-Bellis has submitted a transfer request.
There has been growing speculation in Portugal that Benfica are seriously interested in Southampton defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis, and the latest report from the Portuguese media has added another layer to the developing transfer story.
According to reports from Portuguese outlet Correio da Manhã, Harwood-Bellis has informed Southampton that he wants to leave the club this summer. The claim has been presented as a potential transfer request, although there is still some uncertainty over whether the defender has formally submitted an official request or has simply made his intentions known during discussions with the club.
Either way, the development could create an interesting situation for Southampton as Benfica continue to pursue the England international.
Southampton have little reason to sell
There is no doubt Harwood-Bellis would be a significant player to lose, particularly at this stage of the season.
The central defender has established himself as an important member of the Southampton squad and has continued to develop since joining the club permanently.
However, Southampton are in a relatively strong negotiating position. Harwood-Bellis still has two years remaining on his contract, meaning the Saints are under no immediate pressure to accept an offer for him.
That puts the decision firmly in Southampton’s hands unless Benfica are prepared to meet the club’s valuation.
The latest reports suggest that Southampton have already rejected an offer worth £20 million from Benfica at the weekend.
That response is hardly surprising given the circumstances surrounding the player.
Benfica’s £20m offer rejected
Southampton paid around £20 million to make Harwood-Bellis’ move permanent two years ago following his initial season-long loan spell.
Since then, the defender has arguably increased his value.
Harwood-Bellis has continued to develop as a player and has also earned an England cap, adding further weight to Southampton’s belief that any interested club should pay considerably more than the £20 million reportedly offered.
The Saints are believed to want at least £30 million before they would seriously consider allowing their centre-back to leave.
That valuation could prove to be the biggest stumbling block in negotiations with Benfica.
While the Portuguese giants are one of the most prominent clubs in their country, their transfer spending history suggests that paying £30 million for Harwood-Bellis would represent a major financial commitment.
Benfica’s transfer record raises questions
Benfica’s current record signing is Enzo Fernández, who cost the club around £40 million during the 2022/23 season.
That figure stands comfortably above their next most expensive purchase, Darwin Núñez, who reportedly cost around £30 million.
Beyond those two deals, Benfica’s spending drops significantly.
Only seven players in the club’s history have reportedly cost more than £20 million, which underlines how unusual a £30 million transfer would be for the Portuguese side.
For that reason, there are doubts about whether Benfica would be willing to increase their offer substantially enough to satisfy Southampton.
The £20 million bid reportedly made at the weekend could therefore represent the level at which the Portuguese club are comfortable operating.
Unless they are prepared to break from their usual transfer strategy, negotiations may struggle to progress.
Is the transfer request genuine?
The latest revelation that Harwood-Bellis has apparently expressed a desire to leave has naturally attracted plenty of attention.
However, there is still uncertainty over exactly what has happened behind the scenes.
The headline surrounding the Portuguese report describes the development as a transfer request, but that does not necessarily mean the defender has formally submitted an official written request to Southampton.
It could instead mean that Harwood-Bellis has spoken to club officials or representatives and communicated that he would prefer to pursue a move to Benfica.
That distinction could become important as the situation develops.
There is also a possibility that the reports are being used to increase pressure on Southampton during negotiations.
The suggestion is that Benfica, Portuguese media outlets and potentially player representatives could all have an interest in pushing the story forward and encouraging Southampton to reconsider their position.
Southampton fans react
Southampton supporters have naturally been concerned by the reports, particularly after Harwood-Bellis’ importance to the team became increasingly clear.
One fan argued that losing him at this stage would be a disaster, especially after his performance on Saturday. The supporter also expressed hope that Harwood-Bellis would remain at Southampton for the season while calling for the club to improve the squad regardless of what eventually happens with the defender.
Another supporter offered a different perspective on the situation and questioned whether Benfica should automatically be considered such an attractive destination.
They pointed out that Benfica finished third last season and subsequently had to go through a play-off involving Hearts to progress in European competition.
The supporter also raised questions about the Portuguese media coverage surrounding the transfer.
Portuguese media under scrutiny
According to the supporter, Correio da Manhã is owned by the same group as Record, one of Portugal’s major daily sports newspapers.
They suggested that the two outlets have a reputation for promoting Benfica-related stories and potentially increasing pressure around transfers involving the club.
The supporter also claimed to have seen Portuguese television coverage discussing Harwood-Bellis and Benfica.
According to their account, the discussion focused heavily on the idea that the Southampton defender was pushing for the move because the interested club is Benfica.
However, the same discussion reportedly acknowledged that Benfica’s offer had not reached the £30 million figure believed to be required to trigger Southampton into seriously considering a sale.
That would suggest the transfer remains far from straightforward.
Southampton hold the cards
For now, Southampton appear to have little reason to panic.
They have a valuable defender under contract until 2028, they have already rejected a significant offer, and they have reportedly established a £30 million valuation.
The biggest question is whether Benfica are prepared to stretch their usual spending limits to complete the deal.
Harwood-Bellis expressing a desire to leave could complicate matters, but it does not automatically mean Southampton must sell.
Unless Benfica return with an offer close to the Saints’ asking price, Southampton can continue to resist.
The coming days should therefore reveal whether the transfer request is a genuine indication that Harwood-Bellis wants a new challenge or simply another development in a negotiating battle between the two clubs.
For now, the Saints remain in control of the situation, while Benfica must decide whether their interest is strong enough to justify a major investment.
