Tonda Eckert is prepared to offload six Southampton players.
Southampton could be set for a busy end to the summer transfer window, with manager Tonda Eckert reportedly prepared to allow as many as six players to leave St Mary’s before the deadline.
The Saints have not made an especially large number of additions since the transfer window opened, although several important deals have already been completed.
Cyle Larin and Daniel Peretz have both joined Southampton permanently after spending last season with the club on loan. Lewis Dobbin and George Long have also arrived, while Manchester City forward Divin Mubama has moved to Hampshire on a temporary basis.
Southampton still have until September 1 to complete their transfer business, meaning there is plenty of time for further activity.
While more arrivals could be made, there is also expected to be significant movement in the opposite direction.
Shea Charles remains the biggest permanent departure of the summer so far following his reported move to Fulham, but several other members of Eckert’s squad could now follow him through the exit door.
According to the Daily Echo, six Southampton players are potentially available for transfer before the window closes.
Gavin Bazunu
Gavin Bazunu is one of the players whose Southampton future appears increasingly uncertain.
The Republic of Ireland international has reportedly attracted interest from several clubs, with Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb among those believed to be considering a move for the goalkeeper.
Bazunu has endured a difficult period at St Mary’s, with injuries limiting his opportunities and contributing to his gradual fall down the goalkeeping hierarchy.
His situation has become even more complicated because he is now entering the final year of his Southampton contract.
With the club unlikely to want to lose him for nothing next summer, a permanent transfer could make sense if a suitable offer arrives.
Bazunu was once viewed as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in the country, but his Southampton career has failed to develop as expected.
A move elsewhere could therefore give him the opportunity to rebuild his confidence and restart his career.
Aaron Ramsdale
Aaron Ramsdale is another goalkeeper whose future has become a major talking point.
The arrival of Daniel Peretz has seemingly affected Ramsdale’s position within Eckert’s plans, with the German goalkeeper now viewed as the first-choice option.
Ramsdale spent last season on loan at Newcastle United after leaving Arsenal temporarily and made 12 Premier League appearances during his spell on Tyneside.
Despite his previous experience at the highest level, Southampton are reportedly willing to consider offers for the England international.
Exactly where Ramsdale could end up remains unclear, but his availability could attract interest from clubs searching for an experienced goalkeeper.
Southampton may also feel that moving him on would help create space within a crowded goalkeeping department.
Yuki Sugawara
Yuki Sugawara is another player who could be heading towards the Southampton exit.
The Japanese defender spent last season on loan at Werder Bremen after Southampton were relegated from the Premier League.
Following his return to the south coast, Sugawara has reportedly found himself out of favour under Eckert.
His lack of prominence in the manager’s plans has led to speculation that Southampton could look to find him a new club before the September 1 deadline.
Sugawara arrived with a reputation for being a capable full-back, but his current situation suggests that his long-term future may lie away from St Mary’s.
If an appropriate offer is received, Southampton could decide that a permanent departure is the best option for both the player and the club.
Damion Downs
Damion Downs is also believed to be available for transfer.
The forward joined Southampton last summer but struggled to make a significant impact during the opening months of his time at the club.
His lack of regular first-team opportunities eventually resulted in a January loan move to Hamburg.
Downs has since returned to Southampton, but his position within Eckert’s squad remains uncertain.
The Saints are reportedly prepared to listen to offers for the attacker as they attempt to reduce the number of fringe players within their squad.
A permanent move would give Downs the chance to find regular football elsewhere, while Southampton would be able to remove another player who does not appear central to their immediate plans.
With the transfer window closing at the beginning of September, his situation is one to monitor.
Cameron Archer
Cameron Archer is another forward whose future at Southampton remains unclear.
The striker has been linked with a possible move away from the club this summer, with West Bromwich Albion and Wrexham among the sides reportedly interested in securing his services.
Southampton are understood to be open to offers for Archer despite giving him some involvement during pre-season.
However, he was left on the bench for the opening Championship fixture against Watford and did not enter the game as Eckert’s side suffered a 2-1 defeat.
Archer’s statistics from last season show why other clubs could still be interested.
He averaged 0.36 non-penalty goals per 90 minutes, while his expected-goals figure stood at 0.50 per 90. He also averaged 2.71 shots and 1.08 shots on target per 90 minutes.
Those figures suggest that Archer remains capable of producing an attacking threat if given consistent opportunities.
Nevertheless, Southampton appear willing to consider a sale if the right proposal arrives.
Ben Brereton Diaz
Ben Brereton Diaz completes the group of six players reportedly available to leave Southampton.
The Chile international spent last season on loan at Derby County, where he remains a player of interest.
Derby are reportedly keen on bringing Brereton Diaz back, potentially providing the forward with an opportunity to continue his career at a club where he already has recent experience.
Southampton are believed to be receptive to offers for the striker, much like their stance regarding Archer.
Brereton Diaz’s situation could therefore be resolved before the transfer deadline if Derby or another interested club makes a suitable proposal.
Southampton facing busy final days
With the transfer window entering its final stages, Southampton could have considerable work to complete.
Eckert has already overseen several arrivals, but trimming the squad could be just as important as adding new players.
Bazunu, Ramsdale, Sugawara, Downs, Archer and Brereton Diaz all face uncertain futures, and Southampton are reportedly willing to sanction departures for the right offers.
How many of those six players will still be at St Mary’s when the window closes on September 1 remains to be seen.
For Southampton, the priority will be ensuring that any departures do not leave Eckert short of quality as the club attempts to recover from its difficult start to the Championship campaign.
