Southampton receives a significant €20m boost in the ongoing Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Benfica transfer saga.

Southampton have received a significant boost in their efforts to keep Taylor Harwood-Bellis this summer, with Benfica’s decision to sign another defender potentially bringing an end to their interest in the England international.

The Portuguese giants had previously made a similar approach for the Southampton centre-back, but that offer was quickly rejected by the Saints. Now, Benfica’s agreement to sign Alessandro Circati from Parma appears likely to reduce the chances of Harwood-Bellis moving to Lisbon.

Benfica Agree €20m Deal for Circati

According to Fabrizio Romano, Benfica have reached an agreement with Parma for the transfer of Australian international Circati. The deal is reportedly worth around €20 million, which equates to approximately £17.1 million.

The transfer could have major implications for Harwood-Bellis, particularly because Benfica had previously identified the Southampton defender as a potential addition to their squad.

Circati’s arrival would seemingly provide Benfica with the defensive reinforcement they were seeking, making another move for Harwood-Bellis considerably less likely.

For Southampton, that represents welcome news as they continue preparing for another Championship campaign and look to retain the core of their squad.

Harwood-Bellis has been an important member of the Saints’ defence for the past three seasons. He initially arrived at St Mary’s on loan from Manchester City in the summer of 2023 before Southampton were required to make his transfer permanent following their promotion to the Premier League.

The permanent deal reportedly cost Southampton around £20 million, underlining the confidence the club had in the defender’s ability.

Harwood-Bellis’ Southampton Journey

The 24-year-old originally developed through Manchester City’s academy system but struggled to establish himself in Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad.

He made only eight senior appearances for the Premier League champions before embarking on several loan spells. Blackburn Rovers, Anderlecht, Stoke City, Burnley and Southampton all benefited from his services before the Saints eventually secured his permanent signature.

Since moving to the south coast permanently, Harwood-Bellis has continued to develop into an accomplished ball-playing centre-back.

His performances have been particularly impressive despite Southampton experiencing several difficult seasons. His displays eventually earned him international recognition, with the defender receiving a call-up to the England squad under Lee Carsley in November 2024.

His development also attracted attention from Benfica, with Marco Silva previously attempting to bring him to the Portuguese capital.

Southampton Determined to Keep Their Defender

Despite Benfica’s previous interest, Southampton have maintained that they expect Harwood-Bellis to remain at St Mary’s beyond the September transfer deadline.

Portuguese publication Correio da Manhã recently reported that the defender had informed Southampton of his desire to leave the club this summer. However, the Saints are believed to value him at around €35 million, or approximately £30 million.

That valuation could have made a potential transfer difficult for Benfica, particularly when compared with the €20 million they have agreed to spend on Circati.

The fact that Southampton previously rejected an offer around the same level as the Circati deal further demonstrates how highly the Championship club value Harwood-Bellis.

With Benfica seemingly securing their defensive target elsewhere, Southampton’s chances of retaining their star centre-back have therefore increased considerably.

Why Harwood-Bellis Is So Important

Southampton’s determination to keep Harwood-Bellis is understandable given his experience and ability.

Although he is still only 24, the defender has already accumulated more than 150 Championship appearances. He has also gained experience in the Premier League and Belgian top flight, while representing England at international level.

His defensive qualities make him a valuable player at Championship level, but it is his ability with the ball that particularly separates him from many defenders in the division.

Harwood-Bellis is comfortable carrying possession out from the back and can play progressive, line-breaking passes into midfield and attack. That skill set makes him especially suited to teams that want to dominate possession and build attacks from defence.

Contract Situation Gives Southampton Control

Another major advantage for Southampton is Harwood-Bellis’ contract situation.

The defender remains under contract at St Mary’s until the summer of 2028, meaning the Saints are under no immediate pressure to sell him.

Unless another club submits a sufficiently attractive offer, Southampton can afford to retain their prized defender and continue building their squad around him.

Finding a replacement with a similar combination of age, Championship experience, defensive ability and passing quality would also be extremely difficult.

Southampton Still Need More Signings

While keeping Harwood-Bellis could prove to be one of Southampton’s most important pieces of business this summer, Tonda Eckert still has areas of his squad that require strengthening.

The Saints have not been particularly active in the transfer market, although Cyle Larin, Daniel Peretz and George Long have all made their loan moves permanent. Lewis Dobbin and Divin Mubama have also joined the club.

However, Shea Charles’ departure to Fulham has created a significant gap in midfield.

Eckert will therefore be keen to address that weakness before the transfer deadline, particularly with Southampton once again targeting promotion from the Championship.

Financially, the Saints should have sufficient resources to strengthen, meaning money should not necessarily prevent further additions.

For now, though, the potential end of Benfica’s pursuit of Harwood-Bellis represents a major positive for Southampton.

Keeping their 24-year-old defensive leader could be just as valuable as making another signing, and with the player increasingly likely to remain on the south coast, Eckert can focus on reinforcing other areas of his squad ahead of another promotion push.
