Southampton’s new FA prospect emerges as Tonda Eckert’s Spygate ban saga continues.

Southampton are increasingly hopeful that the Football Association will finally reach a decision on Tonda Eckert’s involvement in the club’s spying controversy during the upcoming September international break.

The Saints are reportedly looking for the long-running matter to be brought to an end during the extended break later this month. According to talkSPORT, Southampton would welcome a definitive outcome during the three-week period when there will be no domestic fixtures because of changes to the 2026/27 football calendar.

The unusually long international window could provide the club with valuable breathing space as it waits to discover whether Eckert will face a significant punishment for his role in the controversy.

Extended International Break Could Bring Resolution

The international schedule for the 2026/27 season has been adjusted, with September’s international break extended by an additional week.

That change means clubs will have three weeks between competitive matches, while one of the later international windows in the season has been removed. The extended gap gives teams more time to work on their squads, coaching structures and other important matters away from the pitch.

For Southampton, it could also create the perfect opportunity for the Eckert situation to finally be resolved.

The Saints have enjoyed a relatively encouraging beginning to the new campaign, but uncertainty continues to surround their head coach because of the outstanding FA case.

Eckert was charged by the governing body in July following an investigation into the spying scandal. While Southampton have already faced punishment from the EFL, the FA’s separate process could still result in a personal sanction against the German coach.

Until a final decision is made, the possibility of a football ban remains over Eckert.

Southampton Already Punished Over Spying Scandal

The controversy has already had major consequences for Southampton.

The club were expelled from last season’s Championship play-offs after being found guilty of breaking EFL regulations concerning the surveillance of opponents’ training sessions. As an additional punishment, Southampton began the current campaign with a four-point deduction.

Those penalties have made the situation particularly damaging for the Hampshire club, which had worked hard to reach the play-offs last season.

However, the FA conducted its own investigation separately from the EFL disciplinary process. That investigation eventually resulted in Eckert being charged in July.

Southampton are therefore still waiting to discover exactly what punishment, if any, the 33-year-old will receive.

The uncertainty has continued into the new campaign, despite the club making a respectable start under Eckert.

How Serious Could Eckert’s Punishment Be?

One of the biggest questions surrounding the case is whether the FA will impose a lengthy ban on Eckert.

There is already a high-profile precedent involving a similar spying controversy. Bev Priestman, who was involved in the Canada women’s team scandal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, received a one-year football ban from FIFA.

However, it remains unclear whether Eckert will face anything comparable.

The FA is not automatically required to copy FIFA’s punishment, particularly because the circumstances and governing regulations are different. There is also a Championship precedent that could work in Eckert’s favour.

Marcelo Bielsa avoided a football ban after his involvement in a spying incident while managing Leeds United in 2019.

That means Southampton supporters will have to wait to discover whether the FA considers Eckert’s case serious enough to justify a lengthy suspension.

For Southampton, a substantial ban would represent another major setback after the club have already paid a heavy price for the wider controversy.

Eckert Has Retained Solak’s Support

Despite the uncertainty, Southampton owner Dragan Solak has continued to back Eckert.

The decision to retain the German coach following the club’s expulsion from last season’s play-offs was significant. There had been plenty of speculation about whether Southampton would make a change in the dugout after the punishment, but Solak ultimately decided to continue with Eckert.

The manager subsequently remained in charge heading into the new season after guiding Southampton to fourth place during the 2025/26 campaign.

His position appears to have become increasingly secure as the Saints have made progress on the pitch.

Nevertheless, everything could change if the FA imposes a lengthy suspension.

Southampton’s Encouraging Start

Despite beginning the campaign with a four-point deduction, Southampton have managed to put together a positive run of results.

Their recent league form demonstrates that Eckert’s side have been capable of producing convincing performances while dealing with the difficult circumstances surrounding the club.

The Saints recorded a 4-1 home victory over Bristol City before beating Swansea City 3-1 at St Mary’s.

They then drew 1-1 away at Lincoln City and followed that result with another 1-1 draw against Birmingham City.

Southampton returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion against Millwall, recording a 5-1 home victory.

Overall, the Saints have won four of their opening seven league matches, while two games have ended in draws. Despite their deduction, that run has left them with 10 points and sitting eighth in the Championship standings.

Their next assignment will be particularly important as they travel to Wrexham on September 19, with the match scheduled to kick off at 3pm.

A Ban Would Create a Major Problem

A lengthy suspension for Eckert would leave Southampton facing another difficult challenge.

The club have already experienced significant disruption because of the spying scandal, and losing their head coach for an extended period could make matters considerably more complicated.

Finding a suitable temporary replacement would not necessarily be straightforward, particularly if Southampton are competing near the top end of the Championship.

The fact that Solak has continued to support Eckert suggests that the owner believes the German can remain in charge for the long term.

That makes a major FA suspension even more problematic because Southampton would potentially have to alter their plans despite the team’s encouraging start.

Saints Want the Saga Finally Closed

There is now a growing sense that everyone connected with Southampton simply wants the controversy to reach its conclusion.

The spying scandal first dominated headlines at the end of last season and has continued into the new campaign through the FA’s separate investigation.

While Southampton have already accepted significant sporting consequences, Eckert’s personal situation remains unresolved.

The September international break could therefore provide the ideal opportunity for the FA to announce its decision.
