Southampton’s Dragan Solak received a warning from Tonda Eckert regarding Spygate as the FA decision approaches — saying “there’s a limit.”

Southampton remain in a period of uncertainty regarding Tonda Eckert’s future, with the Football Association still considering what punishment could be imposed on the Saints head coach following the club’s Spygate controversy.

Eckert was charged in July with three breaches of FA Rule E3.1 because of his alleged involvement in the scouting scandal that ultimately resulted in Southampton being removed from the Championship play-offs at the end of last season.

The FA claims the German coach directed and/or authorised the monitoring of training sessions involving Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough between December 2025 and May 2026. Southampton subsequently reached the play-off final following an impressive conclusion to the campaign, before the disciplinary case dramatically altered their promotion hopes.

Despite the ongoing investigation and possibility of a suspension, Southampton’s hierarchy have continued to stand behind Eckert. The 33-year-old has remained in charge during the opening stages of the current Championship campaign.

However, uncertainty over a potential suspension has led to questions about how long Southampton can realistically operate without their head coach while attempting to achieve their Premier League promotion objective.

Southampton urged to have a limit

Football League World spoke to Southampton fan pundit Louis Harris about the situation and whether there should be a point where the club has to reconsider its approach if Eckert receives a lengthy suspension.

Harris remains strongly supportive of the Saints boss and believes Eckert deserves significant credit for the transformation Southampton have experienced since he took charge.

After succeeding Will Still following a difficult spell for the club, Eckert dramatically improved Southampton’s results and performances.

His work was recognised when he collected the EFL Manager of the Month award in February, March and April as Southampton produced a strong finish and secured their place in the play-offs.

Harris went as far as describing Eckert as one of Europe’s best young managers, highlighting the influence he has had since being promoted from his previous role.

Solak has backed Eckert

Southampton owner Dragan Solak has also publicly demonstrated his support for Eckert.

The club’s hierarchy confirmed in June that they intended to continue with the German coach despite the disciplinary uncertainty surrounding his involvement in the Spygate case.

That backing has remained important as Southampton attempt to build momentum during the current season.

Speaking to FLW, Harris argued that Southampton should continue supporting Eckert if any suspension imposed by the FA remains manageable.

However, the fan pundit also believes there must eventually be a point where the club considers whether continuing to pay a suspended manager is sustainable.

“For me, Eckert is the standout reason as to why we’ve done so well since he’s taken over,” Harris explained.

He then suggested six months should represent the maximum period Southampton should be prepared to operate under those circumstances.

“There’s a limit as to how long the club can deal with paying for him whilst he’s not actually doing his job. For me, six months. Six months is the max,” Harris said.

Six-month warning issued

Harris believes anything longer than six months would force Southampton to take a serious look at their plans and decide whether remaining committed to Eckert would still make sense.

He acknowledged that the club is likely to have contingency arrangements prepared should the manager receive a suspension.

He also suggested Eckert would probably have discussed possible scenarios with Southampton’s leadership.

Nevertheless, Harris believes a ban extending beyond six months would represent a significant challenge.

“Anything over six months and we need to really look at what we’re doing and what the plan is,” he said.

The warning places the potential FA punishment in the context of Southampton’s promotion ambitions. The longer Eckert is unavailable, the greater the possibility that the club could face difficult decisions about its coaching structure.

Eckert’s transformation at Southampton

Eckert’s importance to Southampton has become increasingly clear since he stepped into the first-team picture.

After a challenging beginning to the previous campaign, the German was promoted from his position with the Under-21s and immediately helped change the team’s fortunes.

He won four of his first five matches as interim manager, prompting Southampton to make his appointment permanent in December.

The improvement continued after his promotion to the senior role.

Under Eckert, Southampton climbed from 21st position to fourth, reached the FA Cup semi-finals and pushed Manchester City throughout their Wembley meeting.

His overall record has further strengthened his position among supporters.

As of September 18, 2026, Eckert had recorded 30 victories, 11 draws and eight defeats as Southampton manager. His teams had scored 101 goals while conceding 56.

Strong start to current campaign

Southampton have also responded positively after losing their opening league fixture this season.

The Saints have subsequently gone six matches unbeaten, while their home form has been particularly impressive.

They have won each of their first four home league matches, including a notable victory against high-flying Swansea.

That result would have placed Southampton at the top of the Championship table if not for the four-point deduction imposed following their disciplinary case.

The strong start demonstrates why Southampton will be reluctant to lose Eckert for an extended period.

He has become deeply integrated into the club’s footballing culture, and replacing him temporarily or permanently would represent a significant challenge.

Promotion cannot be compromised

Southampton’s priority remains securing another opportunity to return to the Premier League after the extraordinary circumstances surrounding their failure to achieve promotion last season.

The club cannot afford for the promotion campaign to lose momentum.

Based on Eckert’s record, Harris believes the German is the obvious person to lead Southampton’s attempt to reach the top flight.

However, the possibility of a lengthy suspension creates a difficult scenario.

Southampton possess considerable quality throughout their squad, but there is no certainty that performances would remain at the same level if an interim manager took control.

The club could eventually have to consider appointing someone permanently if Eckert receives a significant ban.

Difficult decision could await Southampton

There is also another consideration. If a replacement coach successfully guides Southampton back into the Premier League, that manager could reasonably expect to remain in charge rather than automatically handing control back to Eckert.

That would make any long-term suspension potentially complicated for the club’s hierarchy.

For now, Southampton continue to support Eckert and remain hopeful that the situation can be resolved without disrupting their promotion campaign.

Much will depend on the FA’s eventual decision and the length of any punishment.

A manageable suspension would allow the club to maintain its current approach, while a significantly longer ban could force Solak and the Southampton hierarchy to reassess their plans.

The ideal outcome for Southampton and Eckert would therefore be a return to normality, with the manager remaining involved and continuing the work that has transformed the club.

Until the FA delivers its decision, however, uncertainty will remain around one of the most important figures in Southampton’s current promotion push.
