Celtic make a call on Roy Keane as four potential managers emerge.

Celtic have reportedly prepared a contingency shortlist of potential managerial candidates should the club eventually decide to part ways with Martin O’Neill, although there is currently no indication that a managerial change is imminent.

The Celtic hierarchy continues to have complete confidence in O’Neill and remains supportive of the experienced Northern Irishman. The 74-year-old has also given no indication that he intends to resign from his position at Parkhead.

The club have made their position clear by insisting that O’Neill remains their preferred choice to lead the team forward. The decision regarding his future ultimately rests with the manager himself, rather than being something the board is currently looking to force.

O’Neill has nevertheless found himself under greater scrutiny following a difficult run of results. Celtic suffered consecutive defeats against Rangers before losing 3-1 to Ferencvaros in the Europa League, increasing pressure surrounding both performances and results.

The latest Old Firm defeat at Celtic Park was particularly damaging. The manner of the loss led to further questions about O’Neill’s position, with the manager subsequently admitting that he needed to reflect on the situation.

Those comments inevitably fuelled speculation that O’Neill could consider walking away from the job. However, Celtic’s board reacted by publicly reaffirming its support for the manager and making it clear that they remain comfortable with him continuing in charge.

There is currently no active process to identify a replacement, and the club have not given any indication that they expect O’Neill to leave.

Four names discussed by Celtic

Despite their public backing of O’Neill, Celtic have still prepared a shortlist of possible alternatives. Such contingency planning is regarded as normal practice at a major club, particularly when a manager’s future has attracted public attention.

Four names have been linked with the position.

Former Everton manager Sean Dyche is among the candidates reportedly being considered as a potential option. Kieran McKenna has also been mentioned, while the possibility of bringing former Celtic boss Neil Lennon back to Parkhead has resurfaced.

Another name discussed is Shaun Maloney, who could potentially step up from his current role and take full control of the team if the circumstances eventually required it.

However, the existence of those names on a contingency list should not be interpreted as evidence that Celtic are preparing to dismiss O’Neill. There is no active managerial recruitment process at present.

Instead, the club’s current priority is to support O’Neill and allow him the opportunity to address the team’s recent problems.

Roy Keane speculation dismissed

Roy Keane has become another name at the centre of speculation after attending Celtic’s most recent Old Firm fixture.

The former Manchester United midfielder’s appearance at the match led to suggestions online that he could be considered as a possible replacement for O’Neill. However, sources close to the situation have rejected those claims.

Keane attended the game as a neutral observer and has a long-standing friendship with O’Neill. He is also a well-known Celtic supporter, meaning his presence at Celtic Park was not considered evidence of discussions over the manager’s position.

According to the information available, there is no genuine managerial link between Keane and Celtic at this stage.

The suggestion that he could replace O’Neill has instead been dismissed as speculation, with no indication that the club are considering him as part of their contingency plans.

Keane would also represent a controversial option among sections of the Celtic support. There appears to be a preference among some supporters for the club to pursue a more modern managerial direction and consider candidates who could offer a different approach.

That, however, remains hypothetical because Celtic have not indicated that they intend to make a managerial change.

O’Neill still has board backing

The strongest message coming from Parkhead is that O’Neill continues to enjoy the backing of the Celtic board.

Despite the recent defeats, the club remain at the top of the Scottish Premiership. That position means the domestic campaign has not reached a point where the board believes a change is necessary.

Celtic are also still competing in Europe, giving O’Neill another opportunity to demonstrate that his team can respond positively to its recent setbacks.

There remains the possibility that O’Neill could choose to resign during the break, but it is understood that had he already reached that decision, Celtic would probably have been informed by now.

That would have allowed the club additional time to identify a suitable replacement and prepare for the next stage of the season.

For now, however, there is no clear indication that such a scenario is developing.

Celtic’s preparation of a managerial shortlist should therefore be viewed as contingency planning rather than confirmation that O’Neill is facing an imminent departure.

At the same time, Roy Keane is not regarded as an option to replace O’Neill despite the renewed speculation surrounding his appearance at the Old Firm match.
