Why Kris Boyd will miss Rangers’ Tennent’s Sixes appearance after a late change

Kris Boyd will not represent Rangers at the Tennent’s Sixes after an injury ruled the former Ibrox striker out of the Legends-style indoor tournament.

Boyd had initially been named in the Rangers squad. However, his participation has now been withdrawn after he suffered a knee injury while playing five-a-side football.

The injury means Rangers will have to make changes before the tournament gets underway at Braehead.

According to The Scottish Sun, Boyd sustained the knee problem during a game of five-a-side football. As a result, he is unable to take part in the Tennent’s Sixes.

Boyd remains closely associated with Rangers after his playing career at the club, having established himself as one of Scotland’s most prolific strikers. His absence will therefore be noticeable when the Rangers team takes to the pitch.

McCulloch Also Unavailable

Boyd is not the only previously announced Rangers player who will miss the event. Lee McCulloch has also been ruled out and will no longer participate in the indoor tournament.

With both Boyd and McCulloch unavailable, Rangers moved quickly to confirm replacements. The club announced that former players Martyn Waghorn and Daniel Candeias would join the squad instead.

Waghorn Returns to Rangers Line-Up

Martyn Waghorn is one of the two players confirmed as a replacement for Boyd and McCulloch.

Former Rangers forward spent two seasons at Ibrox and enjoyed a particularly productive first campaign. During that opening season, Waghorn scored 28 goals in 36 appearances as Rangers won the Scottish Championship title.

That success also secured Rangers’ return to Scotland’s top flight, making Waghorn an important figure from a significant period in the club’s recent history.

Waghorn’s goalscoring record from his first season remains a standout feature of his Rangers career, and supporters will now get the opportunity to see him back in club colours at the Tennent’s Sixes.

Candeias Also Joins Squad

Daniel Candeias has also been added to the Rangers squad for the tournament.

The Portuguese winger spent two seasons at Ibrox between 2017 and 2019. During that period, he scored 14 competitive goals and contributed a number of assists for the club.

His return for the Tennent’s Sixes provides fans with another chance to see a former Rangers player involved in a small-sided football setting.

With Candeias joining Waghorn, Rangers have now found replacements for the two players who were forced to withdraw.

Halliday Takes Over as Captain

The changes to the Rangers squad have also resulted in a new captain being confirmed.

Andy Halliday will now lead the side after the withdrawals of Boyd and McCulloch.

Halliday is another player with a strong connection to Rangers and will take responsibility for leading the team during the tournament.

The Rangers squad therefore still features plenty of players familiar to supporters, despite the changes caused by injuries.

Rangers Prepare for Braehead Tournament

The Tennent’s Sixes will provide former Rangers players with an opportunity to reunite and represent the club in a different format.

Barry Ferguson will remain in charge of the Rangers side, while Halliday will captain the team. The additions of Waghorn and Candeias have helped offset the absence of Boyd and McCulloch.

For Boyd, the focus will now be on recovering from the knee injury that has prevented him from participating. His withdrawal is an unfortunate development for supporters who were expecting to see the former striker back on the pitch.

Rangers will instead head into the weekend with a revised squad, featuring Waghorn and Candeias among the latest confirmed additions.

The club has stated that Boyd and McCulloch are unavailable and will no longer take part, while Halliday assumes the captaincy.

The changes mean the Rangers line-up will look different from the one originally announced, but the presence of several former Ibrox favourites should still make the Tennent’s Sixes an appealing event for supporters.

With the tournament taking place at Braehead, attention will now turn to how Ferguson’s revised Rangers side performs without Boyd and McCulloch, and whether Waghorn and Candeias can make an impact after being brought into the squad.

The revised squad is today.
