Portsmouth will be hoping for one outcome from Tonda Eckert at Southampton.
The South Coast derby between Southampton and Portsmouth already carries enormous significance, but the unresolved situation surrounding Saints boss Tonda Eckert could add another fascinating layer to an eagerly anticipated Championship clash.
The two rivals are preparing to meet at St Mary’s on October 11, with neither side having managed to claim bragging rights in their last four league encounters. Every one of those matches has ended level, meaning there is plenty at stake when the two teams renew one of English football’s fiercest rivalries.
However, Portsmouth will be watching developments away from the pitch almost as closely as what happens on it.
Four consecutive league draws
The recent history between the clubs suggests another tightly contested encounter could be on the cards.
Southampton and Portsmouth drew 1-1 at Fratton Park in December 2011 before producing another 2-2 draw at St Mary’s in April 2012. Their long-awaited return to league meetings last season followed a similar pattern, with the teams drawing 0-0 at St Mary’s in September 2025.
The most recent meeting, played at Fratton Park in January 2026, also ended all square at 1-1.
That means neither team has beaten the other in their last four Championship meetings, adding even more intrigue to the latest chapter of the rivalry.
Eckert’s unresolved FA hearing
The biggest uncertainty surrounding Southampton is the ongoing disciplinary case involving Eckert.
Saints were found guilty of sending someone to spy on Middlesbrough’s training session before their Championship play-off semi-final first leg. Southampton also admitted that similar spying had taken place before matches against Oxford United and Ipswich Town earlier in the campaign.
Eckert is understood to have attended an FA hearing last Thursday, where he was expecting to discover what punishment he could face for his involvement in the controversy.
Yet Southampton are still waiting for clarity.
That leaves the possibility that the German manager may not know whether he will be permitted to take his place in the dugout when Portsmouth arrive at St Mary’s.
Portsmouth could benefit from uncertainty
From Portsmouth’s perspective, the uncertainty surrounding Eckert could potentially work in their favour.
While Pompey’s players and coaching staff have had the international break to prepare specifically for the derby, Southampton have had an additional issue hanging over them.
The Saints will insist their attention remains firmly on the upcoming fixture, but the uncertainty surrounding their head coach is difficult to completely ignore.
Portsmouth will be hoping that uncertainty creates even the smallest psychological advantage.
For a derby of this magnitude, where emotions are already likely to run extremely high, any distraction could prove significant.
Southampton could use the situation as motivation
There is another possible outcome, however, and it could make life even more difficult for Portsmouth.
If Eckert is handed a suspension before the derby, Southampton supporters could respond by creating an even more hostile and intense atmosphere inside St Mary’s.
Saints fans already feel their club has been punished heavily following the spying controversy. Southampton were removed from the play-off final and subsequently began this Championship campaign with a four-point deduction.
A ban for their manager could therefore be interpreted by supporters as another blow.
Rather than weakening Southampton, it could create a siege mentality around the club.
Saints have been dominant at home
There is also a strong footballing reason for Portsmouth to be concerned.
Southampton have made St Mary’s an impressive fortress this season. They have won all four of their home matches so far and have scored 15 goals during those victories.
If the Eckert situation produces anger rather than distraction, Portsmouth could find themselves facing a Southampton side determined to make a statement.
Players who experienced the disappointment of last season’s campaign may also feel particularly motivated to respond on the pitch.
A difficult week away from football could therefore become fuel for Southampton rather than a weakness.
Portsmouth need to exploit the opportunity
From Portsmouth’s point of view, the ideal scenario would probably be for uncertainty to remain around Southampton right up until matchday.
Pompey will want to approach the derby with complete concentration while their opponents are potentially dealing with questions about their manager’s availability.
A victory would have significance beyond local bragging rights.
Portsmouth currently sit 19th in the Championship with eight points from their opening seven matches. Beating Southampton could therefore provide a huge boost to their league campaign while potentially moving them above their rivals in the table.
For a team looking to move away from early-season danger, three points at St Mary’s would be particularly valuable.
A derby that promises drama
There is also the possibility that the FA does not reach a final decision before the October 11 meeting.
That would leave Southampton entering one of their biggest matches of the season with continued uncertainty over whether Eckert could face punishment.
Regardless of what happens with the disciplinary case, the South Coast derby promises to deliver plenty of drama.
The rivalry has already produced four consecutive league draws, and both clubs will be desperate to change that record.
Portsmouth will hope Southampton’s uncertainty works against them. Saints, meanwhile, could turn the controversy into motivation and use the occasion to demonstrate their resilience.
With St Mary’s expected to be rocking, the outcome of Eckert’s case could become one of the most intriguing subplots surrounding a fixture that already has more than enough at stake.
