Eckert thanks Southampton for backing him through Spygate controversy.
Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has expressed his relief at finally putting the controversial Spygate affair behind him, admitting that the experience changed his life and that he will always appreciate the club’s decision to stand by him during a difficult period.
The German manager was handed a suspended six-week ban on Wednesday for his involvement in the scandal, which saw Southampton found guilty of breaching three English Football League regulations towards the end of last season. The controversy erupted after the club was caught filming a training session belonging to Championship play-off opponents Middlesbrough.
The punishment brings an end to months of uncertainty surrounding Eckert’s position and his availability for Southampton’s upcoming fixtures. The Saints were subsequently expelled from the Championship play-off final and handed a four-point deduction for the current campaign.
Eckert accepted full responsibility for his involvement in the affair and faced three charges from the Football Association under Rule E3.1, relating to misconduct. However, despite the seriousness of the controversy, an independent commission ultimately decided against imposing the lengthy suspension sought by the FA.
The governing body had pushed for Eckert to receive a ban lasting at least three months, but the final decision means the 33-year-old remains eligible to take charge of Southampton from the touchline.

That outcome is particularly significant because Southampton are preparing for Sunday’s highly anticipated meeting with local rivals Portsmouth at St Mary’s. The south coast derby represents an important occasion for the club, making the timing of the verdict especially welcome for the manager and his players.
Speaking at a news conference, Eckert revealed that the club had received an indication of the decision earlier in the week.
“We got a heads-up on Monday,” he explained.
He acknowledged that the ruling had arrived at an important moment for Southampton, with preparations for the Portsmouth clash already underway.
“It’s a big week for us as a football club,” Eckert said, highlighting the importance of receiving clarity before such a significant fixture.
He added that the uncertainty had affected more than just himself, explaining that a definitive decision would provide relief for everyone connected with the situation.
According to Eckert, there had always been a possibility that the verdict could have gone against him more severely. After waiting for an extended period, the final outcome was not necessarily what he had expected.
Nevertheless, he accepted the commission’s decision and reiterated his willingness to take responsibility for his actions.
“For me it’s just to hold my head up, one more time I made a mistake and it’s for me to take the consequences,” the Southampton boss explained.
When questioned about criticism from those who believe the punishment was too lenient, Eckert declined to offer a detailed response. The manager made it clear that he had nothing further to add regarding those opinions.
However, he was much more open when discussing the support he had received from Southampton’s leadership throughout the controversy.
The scandal created considerable uncertainty about his future, with the possibility of a lengthy suspension threatening to disrupt his work at the club. The manager admitted that the experience had been difficult, not only professionally but also personally.
Eckert explained that the situation had affected those closest to him and that finally reaching a conclusion would allow everyone involved to move forward.
“Obviously it does make a big difference that we can draw a line now. Not just for me but also for the ones close to me,” he said.
The German admitted that the entire experience had changed his life and had not been easy to manage from the beginning.
He explained that there comes a point when difficult circumstances must be brought to a conclusion, particularly when decisions about the future of a football club are involved.
During the summer, Southampton had to decide whether to continue with Eckert despite the controversy and the pressure surrounding the case. The manager acknowledged that the decision ultimately belonged to the club rather than himself.
He has now made it clear that the faith shown in him by Southampton’s ownership and board will never be forgotten.
Eckert specifically thanked owner Dragan Solak, alongside the wider board, for maintaining their support during a period when the club faced significant external criticism.
He suggested that other football organisations might have taken a different approach under similar circumstances, potentially choosing to part company with their manager rather than continue backing him.
For Eckert, Southampton’s decision demonstrated something important about the club’s character, particularly its willingness to remain supportive during challenging moments.
He explained that the backing he received was not simply a gesture that mattered during the immediate aftermath of the scandal. Instead, it was something he expected to remember throughout his career.
“What makes this club special is that in times that are a lot tougher and especially with a lot of outside pressure, that we come to a decision the way we have done it,” Eckert said.
He concluded by reiterating the depth of his appreciation for Southampton’s decision to stand by him.
“It will be and not just for the moment but that will be something to forever be grateful for.”
With the disciplinary verdict now delivered, Eckert can concentrate on football rather than the uncertainty surrounding his punishment. His immediate priority will be preparing Southampton for the Portsmouth derby, a fixture that carries enormous significance for supporters of both clubs.
Although the Spygate controversy has left a lasting mark on Southampton’s season, the manager’s eligibility to remain on the touchline provides greater stability ahead of Sunday’s encounter.
For Eckert, the experience has been challenging, but his gratitude towards the club is unmistakable. Southampton’s decision to retain his services has given him the opportunity to continue his work, and he now hopes to repay that faith through his performances on the pitch.
