Steven Gerrard replaces Phil Parkinson as Wrexham manager, with five Liverpool wonderkids targeted.
Steven Gerrard has reportedly emerged as a possible successor to Phil Parkinson at Wrexham if the current manager eventually leaves the club, with the former Liverpool captain said to be interested in taking charge should the position become available.
Pressure has been growing around Parkinson following Wrexham’s difficult beginning to the Championship campaign. The Red Dragons were expected to compete near the top of the division after narrowly missing the play-offs last season, but their early results have failed to match those expectations.
After ten matches, Wrexham have managed only two victories and currently sit 17th in the Championship. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney would reportedly be reluctant to dismiss Parkinson because of everything he has accomplished since arriving in 2021, when the club were still playing outside the Football League.
Nevertheless, another prolonged run of poor results could eventually leave the owners with little alternative. According to talkSPORT, Gerrard would be willing to consider the role if a vacancy opens.
Gerrard’s Liverpool connections
Gerrard has been out of management since leaving Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq almost two years ago. Earlier in his coaching career, he worked with Liverpool’s under-18s and remains closely connected to the club.
If Gerrard were appointed at Wrexham, it would therefore be logical for him to explore his Liverpool connections when looking for reinforcements. Several young players could benefit from regular Championship football.
Kieran Morrison

Nineteen-year-old winger Kieran Morrison is highly regarded at Anfield and caught the eye while working with former Wales manager Rob Page’s under-21 side last season.
Morrison is currently gaining experience in League One with Sheffield Wednesday, so Wrexham may need patience before pursuing a deal. If the Welsh club are still in the Championship next season, joining Gerrard in north Wales could represent an attractive progression for the young attacker.
Luke Chambers

Luke Chambers could also become a target, particularly because left-back remains an area Liverpool need to address. The 22-year-old recently came off the bench during Liverpool’s Champions League victory over LASK and could potentially receive more first-team opportunities.
Chambers already understands the Championship after spending the second half of last season with Charlton, where he was mainly deployed as a wing-back. His delivery could make him a sensible addition.
Owen Beck

Owen Beck appears to be an especially logical candidate. Born in Wrexham, the 24-year-old has Championship experience and is the great-nephew of Welsh and Liverpool legend Ian Rush.
The left-back has also had spells with Blackburn and Dundee, but Wrexham may have to wait before making a serious approach. Beck has been recovering from hamstring surgery, an injury that contributed to his loan spell at Derby being ended early last season.
With Beck now 24, a permanent move could provide the next stage of his career. A return to his birthplace while working under Gerrard could be an appealing option for everyone involved.
Harvey Elliott

Harvey Elliott is perhaps the most recognisable name on the potential list. The 23-year-old midfielder was once viewed as one of England’s brightest young talents, but his progress has stalled during the past couple of seasons.
His loan spell at Aston Villa last season proved disappointing after Unai Emery decided early that the club would not activate the option to sign him permanently. As a result, Elliott saw very little action.
His current loan at Valencia has also endured an uncertain beginning, with fitness concerns affecting his involvement. Wrexham could allow Elliott to take a step back, rebuild confidence and rediscover his form.
Gerrard could be particularly attractive to Elliott because the midfielder admired the former Liverpool captain while growing up. Playing under his childhood idol could make Wrexham appealing.
Michael Laffey

Michael Laffey is another Liverpool prospect who could benefit from a move. The 20-year-old has not yet made his senior debut for the Reds but has been involved around the first-team setup and featured during pre-season.
A loan to an EFL club would represent a sensible next stage in his development, giving him senior football. Working with an experienced figure such as Gerrard could also provide valuable guidance as he attempts to establish himself.
Potential coaching reunion
Gerrard could also bring familiar members of his coaching network to Wrexham. During previous spells with Rangers and Aston Villa, he worked alongside Michael Beale and former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister.
Beale has experienced difficult managerial periods at Sunderland and QPR but is currently in charge of Belgian side SV Zulte, who sit eighth in the top flight. McAllister’s last coaching position came alongside Gerrard at Aston Villa.
For now, Parkinson remains in control, but supporters will be watching closely as results become increasingly important again. However, continued poor results could force the club to consider alternatives, with Gerrard potentially waiting in the wings and several Liverpool youngsters possibly following him to Wales.
