Eckert provides an injury update on two Southampton players after the goalless draw with Bolton.
Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has provided an update on the fitness of Cyle Larin and Flynn Downes following the club’s goalless draw with Bolton Wanderers, with the Saints hopeful that one player will recover in time for next weekend’s trip to West Ham United.
Larin is currently expected to be available for Southampton’s upcoming fixture despite being forced to leave the pitch during Saturday’s stalemate. The Canadian striker was substituted after 41 minutes following a collision with goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu.
The incident raised concerns over Larin’s condition, particularly because he was unable to continue the match. However, Eckert has played down fears surrounding the forward and indicated that the problem does not appear to be particularly serious.
The Southampton boss explained that Larin had suffered a collision earlier in the game before attempting to continue. After assessing the situation, the coaching staff eventually decided that it was better to replace him.
“His back is fine,” Eckert said when asked about Larin’s condition.
“He had a collision early on and then he tried to carry on, but then I asked for a sub at one point.”
While Eckert acknowledged that the club still needs to establish the full extent of the problem, he remains optimistic that Larin will be fit enough to feature against West Ham next weekend.
“We’ll see how serious it is, but I’m hopeful he’ll be in for next week,” he added.
That would represent a positive development for Southampton, particularly with the club preparing for an important away fixture. Larin’s availability would give Eckert another attacking option as his side looks to produce a stronger attacking performance following a frustrating afternoon against Bolton.
The Saints were unable to find a breakthrough in the goalless draw, and losing Larin before half-time added another complication to their efforts. His potential return for the next match would therefore be welcomed by Eckert and the Southampton supporters.
However, Southampton’s midfield situation appears more uncertain.
Flynn Downes remains a significant doubt for the trip to his former club after suffering ankle ligament damage during the Saints’ 1-0 victory over Norwich City. The midfielder was unavailable for the subsequent meeting with Bolton, leaving Southampton without an important presence in the middle of the pitch.
Despite the nature of Downes’ injury, Eckert has not completely ruled out the possibility of the midfielder making himself available for the West Ham clash.
The Southampton manager revealed that Downes has suffered damage to one of the three ligaments located on the outside of the ankle. Although that makes his recovery challenging, the player has already managed to complete some exercises that have surprised members of the medical staff.
“It’s one of the three ligaments on the outside,” Eckert explained.
“He’s done a couple of bits now where the medical team was surprised that he could do it.”
Downes’ determination to return quickly could give Southampton hope that he will at least have a chance of being involved next weekend. Nevertheless, Eckert stressed that the situation will depend heavily on how the midfielder responds throughout the week.
The player is understood to be pushing hard to recover in time for the meeting with his former club, but there remains a significant question over whether he can manage the pain and cope with the physical demands of a competitive match.
“With the game coming up, he’s trying to push. It will be about how he manages pain. He’ll push for West Ham and see how we get through the week,” Eckert said.
That means Downes faces a race against time to prove his fitness. Southampton will not want to take unnecessary risks with an injury that could potentially become worse, but his importance to the team means his desire to return will be welcomed.
Eckert acknowledged that getting Downes back for West Ham is an ambitious target, but he believes it remains within the realms of possibility.
“That’s what we push for. It’s ambitious, but it’s possible,” the head coach stated.
The contrasting situations involving Larin and Downes leave Southampton with mixed feelings regarding their injury picture. Larin appears to have a stronger chance of returning after his early withdrawal against Bolton, while Downes faces a much more difficult battle to recover from his ankle problem.
For Eckert, the priority over the coming days will be monitoring both players carefully and determining whether either can contribute against West Ham.
Larin’s back problem appears unlikely to keep him sidelined for an extended period, provided there are no complications during his recovery. Downes, meanwhile, will continue working with Southampton’s medical team in an attempt to make the most of his chances.
The midfielder’s willingness to push himself could prove crucial, although the final decision will depend on his fitness and ability to tolerate the discomfort caused by the ligament injury.
Southampton will now prepare for the trip to West Ham knowing that their squad could look significantly different depending on how the two players progress during the week.
Eckert’s comments provide some encouragement, particularly regarding Larin, while Downes’ situation remains one to watch closely. With both players determined to make themselves available, the coming days should provide a clearer indication of who will be ready for the challenge.
For now, Southampton can take comfort from the fact that neither player has been definitively ruled out, although Downes remains the bigger concern ahead of an important away fixture.
