Pundit’s view: Steven Gerrard isn’t worthy of an EFL job, despite rumours surrounding the former Rangers boss.

Steven Gerrard’s next managerial opportunity continues to attract plenty of attention, but pundit Tony Cascarino believes the former Rangers boss should not yet be handed the Wrexham job despite rumours linking him with the Championship club.

Gerrard remains highly regarded for the work he produced during his time at Rangers, where he helped transform the club and ultimately guided them back to the Scottish Premiership title. His achievements at Ibrox have ensured that his name continues to be mentioned whenever a high-profile managerial position becomes available.

The former Liverpool midfielder has also repeatedly been linked with a return to Rangers since leaving the club in 2021. Earlier this year, Gerrard held discussions with Andrew Cavenagh and the Rangers hierarchy following the departure of Russell Martin.

However, the 46-year-old ultimately decided that returning to management at Ibrox was not the right decision for him at that particular moment. Rangers subsequently appointed Danny Rohl, before the German manager later left the club for RB Salzburg during the summer.

Following Rohl’s departure, Rangers moved quickly to appoint Derek McInnes, who had impressed during his time at Hearts. The decision has so far worked extremely well, with McInnes overseeing an impressive run of results and putting Rangers firmly into contention at the top end of the Scottish Premiership.

Gerrard, meanwhile, remains without a club after leaving his most recent managerial position in Saudi Arabia. His next move is therefore becoming an increasingly interesting subject, with several clubs potentially considering his experience.

Cascarino was asked about the latest speculation surrounding Gerrard during a discussion on talkSPORT, particularly reports connecting the former England international with a possible move to Wrexham.

The conversation began when presenter Shebahn Aherne questioned whether Gerrard would represent an upgrade on current Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson.

“When you’re hearing names like Gerrard being rumoured to the club to take over, I don’t know what that’s about. Is he better than Phil Parkinson?” Aherne asked.

Cascarino responded by acknowledging Gerrard’s accomplishments but insisted that he does not believe the former Rangers manager has yet done enough to earn the Wrexham position.

“Steven did exceptionally well at Liverpool’s academy, and it got him the job at Glasgow Rangers, where he did brilliantly well,” Cascarino said.

“He deserves an opportunity somewhere down the line; I don’t think he deserves the Wrexham job yet.”

Cascarino’s assessment recognises Gerrard’s managerial credentials while also suggesting that his record since leaving Rangers has not necessarily justified another major appointment.

Gerrard’s spell at Rangers remains the standout period of his managerial career. He arrived at Ibrox in 2018 and quickly established himself as an important figure in the club’s rebuilding process.

During his first season, Rangers recorded a 61 per cent win rate, while their points-per-game figure stood at 2.0 during the 2018-19 Scottish Premiership campaign.

Those numbers subsequently improved during Gerrard’s following three seasons in Glasgow. His work eventually culminated in Rangers winning the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020-21 season without losing a league match.

His success at Rangers also helped establish his reputation as a promising young manager after initially making the transition from his playing career.

Gerrard later moved into the Premier League with Aston Villa, giving him the opportunity to test himself against some of the strongest teams and managers in English football. However, his time at Villa Park did not produce the sustained success that many had expected.

After leaving Aston Villa, Gerrard moved to Saudi Arabia in 2023, taking charge in the Middle East. His spell there eventually ended in January 2025, leaving him without a managerial position.

Since then, the former Liverpool captain has remained available and has been linked with several potential opportunities.

Wrexham’s situation has naturally generated speculation. The Welsh club have ambitious plans to reach the Premier League after their remarkable rise through the divisions under owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

However, their progress has encountered difficulties in the Championship under Parkinson, with the club struggling to match the momentum they generated during their rapid climb through the English football pyramid.

That has led to speculation about whether the club could consider a managerial change, with Gerrard among the names reportedly mentioned. Former Burnley manager Scott Parker has also been linked with the position.

Despite the speculation, Cascarino believes Gerrard needs another opportunity before being considered for a job of that magnitude.

The comparison between Gerrard and McInnes at Rangers also provides an interesting perspective on their respective starts at Ibrox.

Rangers supporters have been encouraged by McInnes’ early impact. The 55-year-old has overseen an impressive start and has helped establish the Gers as serious contenders for the Scottish Premiership.

According to the figures presented, McInnes currently has a 75 per cent win rate at Rangers, while his points-per-game record stands at 2.4.

Those numbers compare favourably with Gerrard’s first campaign in Glasgow. Gerrard recorded a 61 per cent win percentage during his opening season, along with a 2.0 points-per-game average.

The statistics show that McInnes has made a stronger numerical start than Gerrard managed during his first season at Ibrox.

Of course, Gerrard’s Rangers tenure ultimately developed into a highly successful period, and his achievements should not be judged solely on his opening campaign.

Nevertheless, McInnes’ impressive early record demonstrates why Rangers supporters have quickly embraced the current manager.

For Gerrard, the next challenge will be finding the right club to restart his managerial career. Cascarino clearly believes he deserves another opportunity, but the pundit feels Wrexham should not be that destination just yet.

Whether Gerrard can secure another high-profile role remains to be seen, but his achievements at Rangers ensure that he remains a prominent name whenever managerial vacancies emerge.
