Ex-Sheffield United and Birmingham City Man Sacked After Just 19 Days
Former Sheffield United and Birmingham City winger Mark Duffy has suffered another setback in management, with his latest spell at Southport ending after only 19 days.
Sheffield United supporters will be hoping history repeats itself by May 2027, with the Blades aiming to reproduce the promotion-winning campaign of 2018-19. Chris Wilder remains in charge eight years after guiding the club back to the Premier League, although the current side has experienced an inconsistent start.
United have collected 15 points from their opening 11 league fixtures, enough to keep them in the top half despite continued uncertainty away from the pitch surrounding ownership at Bramall Lane. The character and togetherness of that famous 2018-19 squad will be required again if promotion is to be achieved.
For Duffy, however, recent events have provided a very different kind of headline.
Duffy has pursued management since ending his playing career
The 41-year-old enjoyed a memorable period at Sheffield United under Wilder, contributing six goals and seven assists during the club’s promotion campaign. Despite those impressive numbers, he never appeared in the Premier League for the Blades, spending the following season on loan with Stoke City and Dutch side ADO Den Haag.
Before joining Sheffield United in 2016, Duffy had spent two years with Birmingham City. His time at St Andrew’s was interrupted by several loan spells, and he made only seven appearances for the Blues during that period.
Duffy’s final EFL club as a player was Tranmere Rovers. He moved to ambitious non-league club Macclesfield in January 2022, combining playing duties with a first-team coaching role under Danny Whittaker.
When Neil Danns left Macclesfield in May 2023, Duffy was handed his first permanent managerial opportunity. His reign at Moss Rose was short-lived, however, as he was dismissed in October after a run of four defeats in five matches.
Another opportunity arrived at Warrington Rylands in 2024. Duffy initially joined as a player in February before becoming interim manager two months later. He was subsequently appointed permanently, but that position also ended quickly, with the club dismissing him in September, early in the 2024-25 campaign.
Southport spell ends after just 19 days
Following those two managerial dismissals, Duffy moved into an assistant role with Southport in 2025, working under former Guyana international midfielder Neil Danns.
Danns was dismissed last month, giving Duffy another chance to take charge. His caretaker period produced two victories from three matches, and that encouraging run convinced Southport to appoint him permanently at the beginning of October.
Yet the appointment lasted only 19 days.
Southport announced Duffy’s departure on Tuesday after the team had suffered defeats in both league matches since his permanent appointment. However, the circumstances surrounding his exit appear to involve issues beyond results on the pitch.
According to the Southport Visiter, the club had been informed only hours before the dismissal about social media posts allegedly made by Duffy expressing support for Restore Britain and Tommy Robinson. The account involved has since been deleted from X.
The timing suggested the decision was sudden. Duffy was reportedly still wearing Southport-branded clothing while attending Wigan Athletic Under-21s’ match against Bolton at the DW Stadium. He was pictured alongside former Southport manager Liam Watson, who now works with Bolton.
What comes next for Duffy?
Duffy’s latest departure represents another difficult chapter in his attempt to establish himself as a football manager. Three managerial jobs have now ended with dismissals, making his route toward the professional game increasingly complicated.
His brief caretaker spell at Southport had appeared to offer an opportunity to rebuild his reputation. Two wins in three games provided positive momentum before the permanent appointment, but consecutive league defeats and the social media controversy have brought that progress to an abrupt end.
It remains difficult to predict where Duffy could find his next managerial opportunity. Having already worked at National League North level, he may need to consider dropping another division if he wants to continue pursuing his ambition of progressing through the English football pyramid.
Duffy’s playing career also included spells with several clubs across England, and his experience of different levels made his transition into coaching a logical next step. However, the former midfielder has discovered that succeeding from the dugout requires more than knowledge, with results, relationships and public conduct all capable of shaping a manager’s future.
For now, Duffy faces another period of uncertainty and reflection. His managerial career has yet to develop in the way he would have hoped when he moved into coaching after an accomplished playing career.
The contrast is striking. Eight years ago, Duffy was celebrating promotion to the Premier League with Sheffield United as an important member of Wilder’s squad. Today, after another abrupt managerial departure, he must decide how best to revive his ambitions from a much more difficult position.
