Pundit issues fresh warning over Nathan Jones’s job at Charlton Athletic.

Nathan Jones is facing renewed pressure at Charlton Athletic after a disappointing run of results continued, with pundit Aaron McLean suggesting that the manager could be heading towards the sack if the club cannot quickly change its fortunes.

Jones has been in charge at The Valley since February 2024 and guided the Addicks back to the Championship through the League One play-offs last season. He then kept Charlton in the second tier, but his recent record has prompted concern among supporters.

Charlton’s promising start has completely disappeared

Charlton began the season in encouraging fashion, winning their first three league fixtures against Derby County, West Ham United and Preston North End. That sequence suggested Jones had built a side capable of competing in the Championship.

However, the momentum quickly disappeared. The Addicks have now gone nine league matches without recording a victory, with their latest setback arriving against Norwich City at The Valley on Saturday.

Charlton took the lead after ten minutes when Charlie Kelman found the net. Their advantage, however, did not last.

Norwich entered the contest in even worse form, having suffered six consecutive defeats in all competitions. Despite that poor run, the visitors recovered from falling behind and eventually secured a convincing 3-1 victory.

Paris Maghoma and Mathias Kvistgaarden scored to turn the match around, while an Ivan Mesik own goal later completed Norwich’s comeback and left Charlton empty-handed.

The defeat increased pressure on Jones. Charlton are now 19th in the Championship, although they still possess a six-point cushion above the relegation places. With the team continuing to fall down the standings, the next fixture presents another major challenge.

Middlesbrough challenge could increase the pressure

Jones and his players face a difficult assignment on Saturday when they travel to the Riverside Stadium to meet league leaders Middlesbrough.

Another defeat could intensify questions about the manager’s future. The Addicks need a response after losing at home to Norwich, who arrived on a six-match losing streak.

The defensive problems have also become a major talking point. Charlton had previously developed a reputation for being difficult to break down under Jones, but that characteristic has seemingly disappeared during their recent slump.

Virgo questions Charlton’s defensive decline

The situation was discussed during the latest episode of the Inside The 72 podcast, where Adam Virgo highlighted his concern about Charlton’s defensive performances.

Virgo pointed out that Jones has previously relied on clean sheets, defensive organisation and hard work as fundamental elements of his teams. According to the pundit, Charlton are currently moving away from those qualities because they are conceding too frequently.

He also argued that Charlton have never been particularly prolific in attack, meaning defensive stability has been especially important to their success. Being beaten regularly at home makes their situation more worrying.

Virgo’s comments underline how dramatically Charlton’s identity appears to have changed. A side that previously depended on resilience and work rate is now struggling to prevent opponents from creating and converting opportunities.

McLean believes Jones is now in trouble

McLean then offered an even stronger assessment, warning that Jones could be in danger if poor results continue.

He stressed that Charlton had already shown signs of vulnerability after their excellent beginning to the campaign and believes the club is now in a relegation fight. Sitting 19th after nine matches without a win has strengthened that argument.

McLean also suggested that Charlton’s early success may have hidden some underlying weaknesses. In particular, he believes Tyreece Campbell’s goals at the start of the season helped disguise problems that have become much more obvious during the winless run.

For McLean, the biggest concern is not simply the results but the tactical approach Jones has adopted.

Jones’ tactical approach under scrutiny

McLean questioned whether Charlton’s preference for absorbing pressure and attacking on the counter is suitable for Championship football.

The pundit argued that Jones’ teams are not proactive enough and can spend too much time allowing opponents to control matches. In his view, that approach becomes particularly dangerous because Championship sides possess enough attacking quality to punish teams that continually invite pressure.

McLean therefore believes Jones’ playing style could ultimately become the reason for his departure if Charlton cannot find a way to change their fortunes.

Jones still has time to respond, and Charlton remain six points above the zone. However, the immediate schedule offers little comfort. With Middlesbrough waiting next, Jones needs results quickly to ease the growing uncertainty around his position.

Charlton’s impressive opening now feels distant, while their defensive decline and nine-game winless run have transformed the mood. If the Addicks cannot rediscover the resilience that previously defined Jones’ teams, McLean’s warning may become increasingly difficult for the club’s hierarchy to ignore.
