Burnley manager candidate emerges following fresh Rob Edwards development.

Burnley’s search for a new manager has taken another unexpected turn after Rob Edwards reportedly rejected the opportunity to take charge at Turf Moor for a second time this year.

The Clarets dismissed Nicky Hayen on Saturday following a damaging 4-1 defeat away to Lincoln City. The loss came only 12 Championship matches into the season and left Burnley inside the relegation places, having managed just one league victory.

Hayen experiment ends after miserable start

Burnley had hoped Hayen could guide them straight back towards the Premier League after their relegation at the end of the 2025-26 campaign. Instead, the Belgian struggled to reproduce the success he had enjoyed with Club Brugge.

Hayen had won the Belgian Pro League in 2024 and the Belgian Cup in 2025, but his first experience of English football quickly became difficult. Burnley’s defeat at Lincoln proved to be the final setback, with the club confirming his dismissal later that evening.

The Clarets are now searching for another manager while facing the possibility of a second consecutive relegation. Their situation has created considerable pressure on the hierarchy to make the next appointment count.

Edwards rejects Burnley again

Burnley had reportedly moved quickly towards Rob Edwards after Hayen’s departure. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Luton Town manager had already been approached by the Clarets during the summer, but he chose not to accept the position at that time.

Edwards has now reportedly rejected Burnley for a second time in 2026. His decision has forced the club to reconsider its options and search elsewhere for Hayen’s replacement.

The rejection is significant because Edwards possesses considerable Championship experience, something Burnley desperately need. He has previously worked successfully at this level, making his decision particularly frustrating for a club attempting to halt its decline.

Diego Lopez arrives at Turf Moor

While the managerial search continues, Burnley have confirmed the appointment of Diego Lopez as their new Chief Football Officer.

According to reports, the club has turned its attention towards candidates outside England as it continues looking for a successor. Lopez will oversee football operations, recruitment and the wider sporting structure, giving him an important role in determining the direction of the club.

The Spaniard arrives with substantial experience in football recruitment and administration. He previously served as Sporting Director at Serie A side Genoa and has also worked as a head scout with Monaco, Lille, Excelsior Mouscron and Bordeaux.

Lopez additionally held a director of sport position at RC Lens, meaning he has considerable knowledge of building football structures and identifying players.

Burnley’s situation is becoming serious

Lopez will have little time to settle into his new role. Burnley were expected to challenge for an immediate return to the Premier League after relegation, but their season has rapidly moved in the opposite direction.

The Clarets are currently 22nd in the Championship after taking only one victory from their opening 12 league matches. They were also knocked out of the EFL Cup by League One Bradford City on penalties in August.

Their home form is another major concern. Burnley have now gone more than a year without winning a league match at Turf Moor, with their last home league victory coming against Leeds United on October 18, 2025.

Such statistics explain why supporters are increasingly worried that Burnley could suffer the same fate as Leicester City, who experienced two successive relegations and are currently playing in League One.

Fans react to Edwards’ decision

Edwards’ latest decision has generated plenty of discussion among Burnley supporters on social media.

Some fans believe the former Luton and Wolves boss would have been an excellent appointment for another Championship club, while others have questioned whether Burnley was the right environment for him.

There has also been criticism of Burnley’s previous decisions, with some supporters suggesting that dismissing Scott Parker towards the end of last season was a mistake.

The mixed reaction demonstrates how uncertain the situation has become. Supporters want an appointment capable of immediately restoring confidence, but the available candidates each carry different levels of risk.

Corberan also unavailable

Edwards is not the only candidate to have moved away from Burnley’s vacancy.

The Clarets had reportedly shown interest in former West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan, but he is understood to have rejected the opportunity because he is targeting another position in the Premier League.

That leaves Burnley with fewer obvious choices and increases the importance of Lopez’s international search.

The club must find a manager who can quickly improve results, rebuild morale and prevent the growing gap between Burnley and safety from becoming impossible to overcome.

Gerrard remains among the favourites

Despite the uncertainty, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is still considered one of the leading candidates for the vacant position.

Gerrard has been without a managerial role since leaving Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq in January 2025. His profile and previous experience could make him attractive to Burnley, although his appointment would represent a different type of gamble.

Edwards offered proven Championship knowledge, whereas Gerrard brings experience from Rangers, Aston Villa and overseas football. Burnley therefore have to decide whether familiarity with the English second tier or a high-profile name should take priority.

Burnley cannot afford another mistake

The next appointment will be crucial. Hayen’s lack of English football experience ultimately proved unsuccessful, and Burnley cannot afford to repeat the same error while their relegation concerns intensify.

Morale around Turf Moor has reportedly deteriorated sharply, while the Clarets are already three points from the teams above them. Another run of poor results could make survival considerably more difficult.

There are still numerous candidates available, but the club needs someone capable of making an immediate impact.

Burnley’s hierarchy, led by Lopez and owner Alan Pace, now faces a defining decision. The wrong appointment could deepen the crisis and put the club at risk of another relegation.

The Clarets expected promotion when this campaign began. Instead, they are searching for stability, confidence and results. Whoever replaces Hayen must deliver those things quickly, because Burnley’s season is already moving dangerously close to a crisis that could become much harder to reverse.
