Middlesbrough player ‘highly likely’ to leave during the winter window, report claims.
Middlesbrough midfielder Connor Barron could reportedly be heading for the exit door when the January transfer window opens, with his lack of playing time at the Championship leaders leaving his future increasingly uncertain.
Boro brought Barron in during the summer transfer window with the expectation that he would provide additional competition and depth in midfield. However, the 24-year-old has struggled to establish himself under head coach Kim Hellberg and has found opportunities difficult to come by.
According to the latest reports surrounding his situation, Barron could be recalled by Rangers during the winter window because of his limited involvement at Middlesbrough. If that happens, the Scottish giants will then have to decide whether to keep him at Ibrox for the remainder of the season or find another solution.
Barron remains under contract with Rangers until June 2028, meaning he still has considerable time remaining on his current agreement with the Glasgow club.

The midfielder joined Rangers from Aberdeen in 2024 and has gone on to make 85 appearances across all competitions for the Ibrox side. Despite his regular involvement, his contribution in the final third has been limited, with Barron recording four assists but no goals during his Rangers career to date.
His move to Middlesbrough was expected to give him a fresh challenge and provide him with regular Championship football. Instead, the switch has not developed as anticipated.
Barron struggling to break into Boro midfield
Middlesbrough signed Barron primarily to strengthen their midfield options and increase competition for places. The Scotland international was viewed as a player capable of adding quality and energy to the centre of the pitch.
However, his move south of the border has so far failed to work out.
Barron has slipped down the midfield pecking order and has struggled to convince Hellberg that he deserves a regular role. His lack of involvement has led to increasing speculation that his loan spell could be cut short.
TeessideLive reports that Barron is now highly likely to return to his parent club during the January window because he has been unable to secure sufficient first-team minutes.
The situation is particularly surprising given the amount of football Barron played during his time at Rangers. He had established himself as a useful option in the Glasgow club’s midfield before making the move to England.
At Middlesbrough, however, he has been unable to replicate that level of involvement.
The competition for midfield places has been intense. Aidan Morris, Sebastian Berhalter and Riley McGree are among the players currently ahead of Barron in the battle for starting positions.
That makes his route into the team particularly difficult, especially while Hellberg’s side continues to produce strong results.
Barron has one senior Scotland cap to his name and came through the Aberdeen academy before breaking into the first team at Pittodrie.
He made 76 appearances for Aberdeen and scored twice before earning his move to Rangers.
His performances were enough to convince Rangers to bring him to Ibrox just over two years ago, and he subsequently became a regular part of their squad.
His Rangers record currently stands at 85 appearances in all competitions, with four assists and no goals.
What next for Connor Barron?
The possibility of Barron leaving Middlesbrough in January represents a disappointing development for a player who appeared to have an opportunity to establish himself in English football.
Boro had hoped his arrival would give Hellberg another reliable midfield option, but the manager has so far shown little willingness to use him regularly.
That lack of opportunities has naturally raised questions about whether remaining at the Riverside would benefit Barron for the second half of the season.
A return to Rangers would give the midfielder another opportunity to compete for first-team football, although there is no guarantee he would immediately become a regular at Ibrox.
Rangers will have to assess his situation carefully before deciding what to do once he returns.
They could choose to retain him as part of their midfield options, or they could look for another club where Barron would have a greater chance of playing consistently.
From the player’s perspective, regular football is likely to be the priority.
At 24, Barron needs consistent minutes if he is to continue developing and push his way back into the Scotland picture. Spending extended periods on the bench at Middlesbrough does little to help that ambition.
The timing is also unfortunate for Barron because Middlesbrough are enjoying an excellent campaign.
Hellberg’s team currently sits at the top of the Championship table after their opening 12 matches. They are ahead of Swansea City, West Ham and Wolves and have emerged as serious contenders for promotion to the Premier League.
Their excellent form makes it even harder for Barron to force his way into the side.
Middlesbrough will be hoping to maintain their position when they return to action this weekend against Charlton Athletic.
The club will enter that fixture full of confidence after producing an emphatic 5-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers in their previous match.
For Barron, however, the situation is considerably less positive.
The midfielder’s lack of involvement is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore, and the latest reports suggest his Middlesbrough stay could come to an end sooner than originally expected.
Given his previous experience at Rangers and Aberdeen, there is clearly a capable player waiting for an opportunity to rebuild his momentum.
A change of surroundings could ultimately be exactly what Barron needs.
If Middlesbrough cannot provide him with regular opportunities, returning to Rangers or securing another loan move where he can play consistently could be the best route forward.
For now, all signs point towards Barron facing a winter decision over his future.
The coming weeks should reveal whether he remains at the Riverside, returns to Rangers, or begins another chapter elsewhere as he looks to get his career moving in the right direction again.
