Cyle Larin’s arrival brings a much-needed boost to Southampton fans after their loss to Preston.

Southampton supporters have been handed an encouraging update on Cyle Larin following their disappointing 1-0 defeat away to Preston North End. Manager Tonda Eckert confirmed that the striker is expected to be available when the Championship campaign resumes against Derby County on 21 November, offering the Saints a timely lift for the club after a frustrating afternoon at Deepdale.

Southampton had hoped to collect another away victory before the international break, but their performance fell well below expectations. Eckert’s side produced a poor first half and were punished when Jordan Thompson scored a superb long-range effort, giving Graham Alexander his first win as Preston manager.

The visitors struggled to respond before the interval and, although they improved after the restart, they could not find an equaliser. Southampton registered 20 attempts during the second half but were unable to beat goalkeeper Lee Nicholls, who produced a performance to protect Preston’s advantage.

The result will have frustrated Eckert, because his team created opportunities without showing enough quality in front of goal. Lewis Dobbin and Divin Mubama were unable to make the desired impact. Manchester City loanee Mubama missed a late chance, while Dobbin failed to seriously test Nicholls during his 80 minutes on the pitch.

Despite the disappointing result, Eckert provided supporters with positive news when discussing the availability of two players who missed the trip to Preston.

Larin and Jander expected back against Derby

Speaking after the match, the Southampton manager confirmed that both Larin and Caspar Jander should be fit for the home fixture against Derby on 21 November. The game will be the club’s first match following the international break.

Jander’s return will give Eckert another option in midfield and could help prevent him from placing excessive demands on Flynn Downes and James Ward-Prowse. Both players have been in the centre of the pitch, and having another available midfielder should provide the manager with greater flexibility.

However, Larin’s expected comeback is the bigger development for Southampton. The Canadian striker has been a source of goals since arriving on the south coast, and his availability should ease concerns about the team’s attacking options.

Eckert will be encouraged by the prospect of having a recognised centre-forward back in contention. Recent performances have highlighted the difficulties Southampton can face when their attacking players fail to convert promising situations. Larin’s presence could give the side a focal point as they look to strengthen their promotion challenge.

The update was shared by journalist Alfie House, who also reported that defender Keven Schlotterbeck had dislocated his shoulder and would need further assessment. Nathan Wood’s absence from the Preston match, meanwhile, was described by Eckert as a selection decision following conversations that would remain internal.

Why Larin could make a difference

Larin’s return could be important because Southampton have demanding fixtures approaching. The Saints remain interested in challenging for automatic promotion, and they will need consistency if they are to remain involved in the race.

The striker offers qualities that have been missing during his absence. Standing six feet two inches tall, he provides a physical presence in the penalty area and gives teammates a target when delivering crosses. His movement and finishing ability can also make life more difficult for opposition defenders.

Against Preston, Dobbin struggled to trouble Nicholls, while Mubama was unable to take advantage of a late opportunity. Larin could offer a different threat and provide Leo Scienza and Kuryu Matsuki with more confidence when sending the ball into dangerous areas.

It is impossible to know whether his involvement would have changed the outcome at Deepdale. Nevertheless, Southampton might have carried a greater attacking threat with their regular striker leading the line. His ability to occupy defenders and make himself available in the box could have created additional opportunities for the players around him.

The upcoming meeting with Derby could provide an ideal opportunity for Larin to return. The Rams are currently 23rd in the Championship and have conceded 30 goals, making them one of the division’s most vulnerable defensive sides according to the figures in the report.

Larin will also be hoping to make an impact in front of the home supporters at St Mary’s. Before injury problems disrupted his campaign, he had scored seven league goals, with six of those strikes coming on home territory. His record suggests that returning to familiar surroundings could help him rediscover his best form.

Important fixtures await Southampton

The Canadian will want to build on his early-season scoring form and challenge near the top of the Championship golden boot standings. More importantly, Southampton need his goals as they prepare for a difficult run of matches against teams competing around the top end of the table.

Meetings with Middlesbrough and Wolverhampton Wanderers are scheduled for late November and early December. Those games could have an important bearing on the Saints’ promotion ambitions, making Larin’s return well-timed.

Southampton have shown that they can score goals without him. Their 4-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers last month demonstrated the attacking potential within Eckert’s squad. However, the performances in the 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion and the subsequent defeat at Preston exposed a lack of cutting edge in away matches.

The contrast between those results and the QPR performance underlines why Larin’s availability matters. Southampton need to turn possession and attacking pressure into goals, rather than allow promising spells to end without a reward.

For now, the forward is expected to use the international break to work towards full fitness and prepare for the Derby encounter. His return should give Eckert another valuable option and reduce the pressure on Dobbin and Mubama to deliver in the centre-forward position.

The manager will hope Larin can quickly regain his rhythm and help Southampton respond positively after the Preston disappointment. With important fixtures approaching, having the striker back could prove a major boost to the club’s hopes of remaining in the automatic promotion picture.
