Eckert provides an update on Schlotterbeck after his worrying shoulder injury.
Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has provided an update on Keven Schlotterbeck after the defender suffered a concerning shoulder injury during the club’s 1-0 Championship defeat against Preston North End.
The German centre-back was forced off after only 11 minutes at Deepdale following an awkward landing that left him in considerable discomfort. Medical staff immediately became concerned about the situation, with a stretcher brought onto the pitch as they assessed the defender.
Although Schlotterbeck eventually managed to leave the field on his feet with assistance from two members of staff, the injury has raised fears that he could spend some time away from the Southampton first team.

Eckert confirmed after the match that the 29-year-old had dislocated his shoulder during the incident. However, the manager is waiting for further medical examinations before determining how serious the problem is and how long his player could be unavailable.
The injury represents another unwanted setback for Southampton, particularly with the international break approaching and important Championship fixtures waiting when the season resumes.
Eckert waits for further medical examinations
Speaking after Southampton’s disappointing defeat at Preston, Eckert acknowledged that Schlotterbeck had suffered a shoulder dislocation but refused to make predictions about the defender’s recovery period.
The Southampton manager explained that the club needed to establish the full consequences of the injury before reaching any conclusions about his availability.
He said: “Let’s see what it is. I mean, he’s dislocated his shoulder in that action. Obviously that’s never a nice one.”
Eckert added that further assessments would be necessary before the club could understand exactly what the injury meant for the player.
He continued: “But we need to see exactly what that means as a consequence before we make any assumptions, so I think I’ll know a bit more in the next days.”
The manager’s comments suggest Southampton are waiting for the results of scans and additional medical checks before providing a clearer indication of the defender’s condition.
For now, there is no confirmed timetable for Schlotterbeck’s return. The extent of the damage will determine whether he faces a relatively short absence or a longer period recovering away from competitive football.
His injury could also create a selection headache for Eckert, who will need to consider his defensive options if the German is unavailable for the next group of fixtures.
Zach Abbott receives another opportunity
Schlotterbeck’s early departure meant Southampton had to make an unexpected defensive change during the opening stages against Preston.
Nottingham Forest loanee Zach Abbott was introduced as his replacement, giving the young defender another opportunity to feature for the Saints.
The appearance was only Abbott’s second since joining Southampton, meaning he was required to adjust quickly to an unfamiliar situation in a difficult away fixture.
Despite the circumstances, Eckert was encouraged by the youngster’s contribution. The manager praised his attitude and suggested he handled the challenge positively, even though the match presented some difficult moments for the defensive players.
Eckert explained that it was not an easy contest for Abbott to enter, particularly because Preston frequently used long balls to put pressure on Southampton’s defence.
He said: “He was very positive. I think he’s done very well. It was not an easy game to come into, especially with the amount of long balls.”
The manager’s comments will provide encouragement to Abbott as he continues trying to establish himself within the Southampton squad.
With Schlotterbeck’s availability now uncertain, the Nottingham Forest loanee could become an important option for Eckert in the coming weeks. However, his involvement will depend on the defender’s recovery and the manager’s assessment of the available players.
Abbott will hope his performance against Preston has strengthened his chances of receiving further opportunities, particularly if Southampton need additional cover at the back.
Nathan Wood’s absence raises further questions
Schlotterbeck’s injury was not the only defensive talking point surrounding Southampton after the defeat.
Nathan Wood, who had been included in every Saints matchday squad so far this season, was left out of the travelling group for the Preston encounter.
His absence attracted attention because he had been a consistent presence in Eckert’s selections before the trip to Deepdale.
When asked about the defender’s omission, the Southampton manager offered a brief explanation but declined to reveal further details.
Eckert simply described the decision as a selection matter before indicating that discussions had taken place during the week.
He said: “It was selection. We’ve talked a lot this week, and that stays internal.”
The response did not provide supporters with a detailed explanation of why Wood was left out. It also made clear that Eckert was not prepared to discuss the private conversations surrounding the decision.
As a result, the exact reasons behind Wood’s absence remain undisclosed. The manager’s comments should not be interpreted as confirmation of a disciplinary issue or any particular disagreement.
Southampton face defensive decisions after Preston defeat
The timing of Schlotterbeck’s injury is frustrating for Southampton, especially after a disappointing afternoon in Lancashire.
The Saints were unable to recover from Jordan Thompson’s outstanding first-half strike and suffered a 1-0 defeat despite producing considerably more attacking pressure after the interval.
Eckert will now have to manage the defensive situation while waiting for further information about Schlotterbeck.
The international break offers some time for the medical team to assess the injury, although the defender’s eventual recovery period remains uncertain.
Abbott’s encouraging contribution provides one possible solution, while the situation surrounding Wood adds another selection question for the manager.
Southampton will be hoping the scans bring positive news and that Schlotterbeck can return sooner rather than later.
Until the medical examinations are completed, however, Eckert cannot provide a reliable timetable. The immediate priority is establishing the extent of the shoulder damage before making decisions about the defender’s rehabilitation and return to action.
