Southampton eye move for Rangers player.

Southampton are reportedly considering a move for Rangers academy defender David Odunukan as the Championship club continue searching for promising young talent beyond England. The 15-year-old has attracted attention after impressing in Scotland, and the Saints’ latest scouting activity suggests Rangers may have work to do to retain one of their brightest prospects.

Southampton scouts watch Rangers prospect

Southampton scouts were present at Cormack Park on Friday to watch Rangers Under-17s face Aberdeen. Odunukan was among the players being monitored, with Football Insider reporting that the Saints were keeping an eye on the young defender.

The London-born teenager started as Rangers recovered from falling behind to secure a 3-1 victory. The fixture gave Southampton an opportunity to assess his development at close quarters, although there is no indication that the club have progressed beyond scouting.

Primarily a central defender, Odunukan has developed a growing reputation within the Rangers academy. He joined the Ibrox club from Motherwell in 2025 and has since emerged as a player to watch in their youth ranks.

Southampton’s reported interest could create a challenge for Rangers, who will be eager to retain a young defender they regard as a promising part of their academy. However, there is no suggestion that Southampton have submitted an offer or made a formal approach. The extent of their interest remains unclear, and the scouting visit should not be treated as confirmation that a transfer is imminent.

A recruitment strategy focused on Scotland

A potential move for Odunukan would fit a wider pattern in Southampton’s recruitment. The Saints have already shown a willingness to look at Scottish academies when identifying young players who could progress within their development system.

Earlier in 2026, Southampton recruited Harris Afzal from Queen’s Park. The 16-year-old had already gained valuable senior experience before making the move south.

The Saints also signed Rory Whittaker from Hibernian in 2025. The defender has since become a regular member of Southampton’s Under-21 side, suggesting the club are prepared to give academy recruits time and opportunities to work towards higher levels.

Odunukan could suit that approach. At 15, he would represent a long-term investment rather than a player expected to make an immediate first-team impact. Southampton would have time to support his development before considering whether he is ready to step up.

The interest also reflects the increasingly competitive market for young Scottish talent. English teams can offer attractive development pathways, making it more difficult for Scottish sides to retain their most promising academy players.

Rangers will be keen to prevent another young talent from leaving, especially with Odunukan eligible to sign professional terms early next year.

International attention adds to the picture

Odunukan’s situation is made more interesting by the attention he has received at international level. Although born in London, he grew up in Scotland and is eligible to represent either country.

He has already been involved with Scotland’s Under-16s. However, England have also taken steps to bring him into their youth international environment.

The teenager was recently included in England’s squad for the Val de Marne tournament in France, following his performances at the SuperCupNI. His selection underlines the interest surrounding his development and the possibility of a contest between the two nations for his long-term international future.

Odunukan started England’s opening fixture against Italy, which ended in a 4-2 defeat. He did not play in the subsequent matches against Japan and France, but his inclusion in the squad remains a notable development.

Neither country has secured his long-term commitment. Players can change their international allegiance before being tied to a nation through a competitive senior appearance. Odunukan therefore has no immediate need to decide, while both football associations can continue following his progress.

Rangers face an important period

Southampton’s reported monitoring is another reminder that Odunukan’s progress is attracting attention outside Ibrox. Rangers will want to provide the right environment for him to improve and convince him that his future is best served at the club where he has developed since leaving Motherwell.

The defender’s age means there is still considerable time for his career to take shape. A move to Southampton, if one eventually materialised, would be about joining an academy pathway and building towards senior football rather than stepping straight into the Championship side.

The scouting report does not establish that Southampton will make a bid. The club may simply be assessing a player who fits their recruitment profile, with further developments depending on how they rate his potential and what opportunities become available.

Rangers cannot ignore the possibility that interest from England could test their ability to retain him. With professional terms potentially available early next year and international attention growing, the months ahead could prove important in determining the next stage of Odunukan’s career.
