After creating history, former Rangers manager Gio van Bronckhorst gets emotional as he leads wild Besiktas celebrations
Turkish football history was created by Van Bronckhorst’s new team, and they informed their rivals of this.
Giomania has taken over Turkey after the former Rangers star inspired his new team to greatness by leading Besiktas to a historic 5-0 Super Cup victory over Galatasaray.
After leaving Ibrox in 2022, the Dutchman had been unemployed, but earlier this summer, he made the decision to relocate to Turkey. After finishing sixth in the Super Lig the previous season, he took over Besiktas at a low point. However, they managed to win the domestic cup, which set up a Super Cup matchup with fierce rivals Galatasaray.
It was a stormy one as usual, with Besiktas’s Ciro Immobile opening the score after a cagey first forty-five minutes. However, it was a crushing defeat in the second half that cemented Van Bronckhorst’s legacy. Before Immobile made it three from the penalty spot, Jonas Svensson added a second. Galatasaray started to lose steam after Victor Nelsson was read on 87 minutes, and they added two more goals in the closing stages to make it an incredible five.
With the victory, Gio became the first foreign coach since Jean Tigana in 2006 to lead Besiktas to the Super Cup. Furthermore, the 5-0 score under the leadership was the largest victory in Super Cup history. Not too bad at all!
The Turkish media has been raving about Van Bronckhorst’s transformative effect this early on. The celebrations that followed were wild, with his jubilant players thrusting him in front of them. After the game, the visibly happy manager stated, “I felt good about the match before the match. My squad played a great game, and I am proud of them. We came out on top today and gave everyone who cheered for Besiktas something to remember. We will celebrate our win for a few days before getting ready for the Samsunspor match, which gets underway on Tuesday.
Working hard and having faith in our abilities is the foundation of everything. Every player for us put forth a lot of effort. The first goal was scored by us when the other team slipped. In the first half, both teams gave it their all. On the pitch, we left it all out there.
“It’s going to be a very important day for my career. ‘You never know when you’ll play in the next final,’ I told my players. Naturally, a 5-0 outcome isn’t guaranteed. I’m extremely happy to be leaving after winning my first official match, 5-0. It will be enjoyable for us.”
“It is very important that Giovanni van Bronckhorst touched something in such a short time,” Pundit Fırat Gunayer later said. The coach deserves our congratulations. The team appears to have adopted his philosophy of play.
Ibrox Sources: Major Whittaker update and Rangers working on A-list forward signing
Before the transfer window closes, Rangers are still looking to add a top-tier forward, sources have told Football Insider.
The Gers’ financial problems force them to sell players in order to raise money for possible new contracts.
Every member of the team is up for grabs this summer, and Philippe Clement has been transparent about this.
On Thursday, Robin Propper, who was leaving FC Twente, completed a £2.5 million transfer to become the ninth summer signing for Rangers.
The need for an elite goalscorer to propel his team into title contention has sharpened after the opening day 0-0 draw against Hearts on Saturday, so the Gers are now concentrating their efforts at the other end of the pitch.
From the sales of Sam Lammers and Connor Goldson during this window, the Scottish powerhouses have already received £4 million.
Morgan Whittaker and Lawrence Shankland are being watched by Rangers.
Lawrence Shankland and Morgan Whittaker are two players the Rangers are thinking about signing, but their asking prices are high.
In January of last year, the Gers made an attempt to sign the Plymouth Argyle winger but were turned down.

Football Insider disclosed that Wolves and Brentford are also interested in Whittaker, so Rangers will have competition when attempting to close a deal for him.
As Shankland approaches the last year of his Hearts contract, he is available for a reduced fee.
Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie says Shankland wants to join the Gers, but it’s unclear if the team can afford to make a deal work.
