Alex Albon turned down Max Verstappen because he is a surprising foe that he “hates to see in the mirror”
Williams star Alex Albon has said something about his F1 foes.
Max Verstappen is on track to win his fourth straight F1 world title, but Alex Albon is more scared of another driver on the track. The Red Bull driver is 62 points ahead of Lando Norris with only three races left in 2024 after his great win at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
After getting two time penalties for accidents in the previous race in Mexico, the Dutchman didn’t care about the criticism of his driving style in Brazil.
Many people have told the 27-year-old that he should tone down his aggressive behaviour, which made him famous when he raced against Lewis Hamilton for the championship in 2021.
But Albon, who drives for Williams, turned down Verstappen when asked which rival he feared the most. “Kevin Magnussen,” he said on the TikTok account for Motorsport.com. “It’s always hard, but we’re on the right track together.”
This season, the Haas driver has also broken the rules. After getting 12 points on the FIA’s Super Licence system, he was the first F1 driver in 2024 to be banned from racing. This meant he missed the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Albon has been a part of one of his flashpoints. He told his team over the radio that the Dane was boxing him in on the track at the Dutch Grand Prix in August, and he also made it sound like it hadn’t happened before.
“They’re boxing me in (Magnussen and Haas), I don’t know why,” he said. He went on to finish 14th. “Again, it’s just risky.” Really risky. The same as Monaco.
The ex-Red Bull driver won’t have to worry about racing Magnussen in 2025, though. He is 32 years old and will be fired by the American team at the end of the season. In 2025, Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon will fill the two open spots.
Albon did, however, name the champion-elect when asked which rival would be the hardest to beat. The 28-year-old said, “Max Verstappen, yes.” ” Without a doubt, the more aggressive defender.”
The British-Thai driver teamed up with Verstappen on Christian Horner’s team in 2019. He joined in the middle of the season after Pierre Gasly was demoted. He kept his seat for the next season, but Sergio Perez took it over after coming in seventh in the standings.
He signed with Williams after being the team’s backup driver for a year. Albon, unlike Magnussen, will still be in F1 next season. He will be paired with Carlos Sainz, who is leaving Ferrari, at Williams.
