Blackburn Rovers announce their second signing of January
Blackburn Rovers have officially confirmed their second addition to the squad during the January transfer window, securing the services of Danish forward Mathias Jorgensen. The 25-year-old attacker has penned a three-and-a-half-year contract with Ewood Park, including the option for the club to extend the deal by an additional 12 months. While the exact transfer fee has not been disclosed, reports suggest that it involves a multi-million-pound sum.
The club has been keen to bolster their attacking options this month, particularly in light of recent squad disruptions. Andri Gudjohnsen remains sidelined due to injury, while striker Makhtar Gueye has departed the club, leaving Rovers with gaps in their forward line. In this context, Jorgensen’s arrival is seen as a timely reinforcement. The club has praised the new signing for his versatility, describing him as “a hard-working and adaptable attacker capable of playing across the frontline,” a description that underscores the tactical flexibility he can offer manager Jon Dahl Tomasson.

Jorgensen joins Blackburn after a relatively brief stint at Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, where he had signed a long-term deal last summer. His stay at the club lasted just six months, but it has now paved the way for a move to the English Championship. Prior to his time in Norway, Jorgensen had impressed in the Danish Superliga with AaB. Over 52 appearances, he registered an impressive tally of 27 goals and contributed nine assists, showcasing his ability not only to score but also to create opportunities for teammates. These performances evidently caught the attention of clubs abroad, culminating in his move first to Bodo/Glimt and now to Blackburn Rovers.
Despite the announcement of the transfer, Jorgensen’s debut is not guaranteed for the immediate upcoming fixture against Ipswich Town. His registration remains contingent on the approval of several administrative requirements, including the granting of a working visa, international clearance, and confirmation from the relevant football authorities. Until these formalities are completed, the Danish forward may not feature in Saturday’s game, although the club is hopeful that the necessary approvals will be secured without delay.
Jorgensen’s arrival is part of a broader January strategy by Blackburn to strengthen the squad in key areas, particularly given the club’s ambitions this season. The management recognizes the importance of depth and competition within the squad, and Jorgensen is expected to provide both. His profile as a forward capable of operating in multiple attacking roles offers flexibility in the team’s tactical setup, allowing the manager to adjust formations and strategies based on the opposition or match situation.
The signing also signals Blackburn’s continued intent to act decisively in the transfer market. Earlier in January, the club confirmed the acquisition of Eiran Cashin from Brighton & Hove Albion, making Jorgensen the second confirmed addition of the window. While the club has yet to reveal any further transfer plans, it is clear that the management is focused on bringing in players who can make an immediate impact, particularly as the Championship season enters a crucial phase.
Fans will be watching closely to see how Jorgensen adapts to life at Ewood Park. His previous experience in Denmark and Norway demonstrates that he has the ability to perform in competitive leagues, but the Championship presents a unique challenge with its combination of physicality, pace, and intensity. If he can replicate his previous goal-scoring form, Jorgensen could become a vital component of Blackburn’s attack, providing both goals and assists to help the club push for higher league positions.
For Jorgensen, the move represents a significant step in his career. Joining Blackburn offers him the chance to prove himself in one of Europe’s most competitive second-tier leagues and to potentially attract attention from Premier League clubs in the future. For Blackburn Rovers, the signing represents a calculated investment in attacking talent, designed to address immediate squad needs while also adding a player with potential for growth and further development.
Overall, Jorgensen’s transfer underscores Blackburn Rovers’ commitment to improving their squad this January, both in terms of quality and depth. The club will be hoping that the Danish forward quickly adapts to English football and contributes to the team’s objectives in the remainder of the season, adding firepower and versatility to a side that has already taken steps to strengthen through the addition of Eiran Cashin earlier in the window.
