Caitlin Clark’s reaction tells the story after Reggie Miller’s bizarre NBA comparison
Caitlin Clark’s reaction said everything after Reggie Miller delivered a surprising comparison during NBC’s NBA pregame show on Sunday night.
The WNBA superstar appeared as a guest ahead of the network’s NBA broadcast, joining the panel alongside Hall of Famer Reggie Miller. During the discussion, Miller was asked which current NBA player he would compare Clark to — a question that immediately raised expectations given her generational impact on women’s basketball.
Miller’s answer, however, caught just about everyone off guard.
Instead of naming one of the league’s elite stars, he chose Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard. While Pritchard is a reliable contributor, capable shooter, and energetic presence off the bench, he is far from a top-tier NBA star — and the comparison visibly stunned Clark.
The camera quickly caught her reaction, and it didn’t take much interpretation. Her facial expression made it clear the comparison hadn’t landed as intended, instantly becoming the most memorable moment of the segment.
To be fair, this isn’t a knock on Pritchard, who has carved out a respectable role in the NBA through hustle and consistency. But placing him in the same conversation as Clark, who is redefining what’s possible in women’s basketball, felt wildly off the mark.
Clark is widely regarded as one of the most talented players the women’s game has ever seen. Her shooting range routinely draws comparisons to Steph Curry, while her court vision and passing ability evoke LeBron James. Players with her combination of scoring gravity, creativity, and confidence are exceptionally rare — regardless of gender.
Pritchard, meanwhile, is an undersized guard who maximizes his opportunities, makes smart plays, and outperforms expectations. Admirable traits, certainly, but stylistically and impact-wise, the comparison to Clark simply doesn’t hold up.
Unsurprisingly, fans watching at home seemed to share Clark’s disbelief. Social media reactions quickly mirrored her expression, with many questioning how Miller landed on that particular name.
Credit to Clark, though, for handling the moment with grace. She maintained her composure and avoided any outward frustration, even as the comment drew widespread scrutiny.
All things considered, it was a memorable television moment — just not for the reasons Miller likely intended. And while bold comparisons are part of sports discourse, this one will probably be remembered more for Clark’s reaction than for the analysis behind it.
