Derby County close in on cut-price signing as midfielder nears switch
Derby County appear to be closing in on a winter-market addition, with progress made toward securing the signature of Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Oscar Fraulo.
Reports from Denmark earlier this week suggested the Championship club had already reached an agreement with Gladbach over the transfer of the 22-year-old. Those claims also indicated that Fraulo is expected to commit his future to the Rams on a long-term contract running until 2029.
At present, the move is said to be awaiting completion of the final formalities between Derby County and the Bundesliga side. While details regarding the transfer fee and the player’s prospective wages in England were not initially disclosed, subsequent reports have provided further clarity.
German outlet Bild has since echoed the Danish reports, reinforcing the suggestion that Fraulo is on course to arrive at Pride Park during the January transfer window. According to their information, the Danish midfielder is already preparing for a switch to the Championship as talks near their conclusion.
Fraulo is currently rated at around €3 million by Transfermarkt, a valuation that reflects both his age and potential. However, Borussia Mönchengladbach are not in a strong negotiating position due to the player’s contract situation. With his existing deal set to expire next summer, the German club face the risk of losing him for free if no agreement is reached this winter.
As a result, Bild claim that Gladbach are expected to receive a fee of just over €1 million from Derby County. This sum is described as a “small consolation” for the Bundesliga side, given that Fraulo is still a young player with resale value but has less than a year remaining on his contract.
Derby’s pursuit of Fraulo is not a sudden development. The club have been monitoring the midfielder for some time and previously attempted to sign him at the beginning of the year. At that point, Fraulo was spending the season on loan at FC Utrecht, gaining regular minutes and experience away from Germany.
Twelve months on, Derby County now find themselves in a far stronger position to finally complete the deal. With the player nearing the end of his contract and Gladbach keen to avoid losing him for nothing, conditions are favourable for the Rams to wrap up the transfer swiftly once the window opens.
If completed, the move would represent a potentially shrewd piece of business for Derby County, allowing them to secure a young, highly rated midfielder for a relatively modest fee. For Fraulo, the switch could offer the opportunity for regular football and a fresh start in English football, while Gladbach at least ensure some return before his contract runs down.
