Diego Simeone’s ‘regret’ over altercation with Liverpool fans at Anfield after Atletico Madrid leader reacts to ‘insults’
Diego Simeone, Atletico’s manager, said: “They were shouting insults from behind the bench throughout the game, and I couldn’t say anything because I’m a coach. Obviously, my reaction was not justified; I insulted him. But it was 90 minutes of insults. “It’s not that easy.”

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone expressed contrition for his altercation with Liverpool fans at the end of their thrilling Champions League match at Anfield, but stated that it was spurred by “insults” he had received during the game.
Virgil van Dijk’s late winner for Liverpool, after Atletico had come back from two goals down to tie the game, provoked a brawl on the touchline, resulting in Simeone getting into a confrontation with fans behind his dugout.
Stewards had to interfere in the confrontation before referee Maurizio Mariani ordered Simeone out.
‘They were hurling slurs throughout the game.’

Simeone stated: “When they scored their third goal, he turned around and insulted me. “I am a person; I am human.”
When asked about the remarks, Simeone responded: “They were shouting insults from behind the bench throughout the game, and I couldn’t say anything because I’m a coach.
“Obviously, my reaction was not justified; I insulted him.” But it was 90 minutes of being abused the entire time, and then you turn around after your opponent scores and they continue to insult you. It isn’t that simple.
“I am not going to delve into the specifics of the insults. I don’t want to go into that conversation. I know what happened behind the manager’s bench. I can’t solve society’s issues in one news conference. I have to deal with it since it happens all the time.
UEFA will wait for the referee’s report before deciding on any potential sanctions following Simeone’s red card, but the Atletico manager expressed hope that Liverpool would take action.
“I hope that a team like Liverpool can improve that part,” he said later.
“When they identify the person who committed this, there should be penalties.
“But the person who needs to remain cool and absorb the insults is me. In my case, you just have to accept it.”
The incident occurred after Marcos Llorente continued his incredible record at Anfield, scoring two more goals to add to the pair he scored in their only win here in 2020, as Atletico rallied from 2-0 down to tie the game.
However, Van Dijk’s goal sealed Liverpool’s victory and caused the altercation on the touchline, which saw Simeone sent out.
