The 77-year-old, who resides in the South-West, will oversee Torquay’s National League South fixture at home to Farnborough FC on Tuesday night. His appointment comes swiftly after the club opted to part ways with first-team manager Paul Wotton earlier in the day.
Wotton’s departure followed a heavy 5-0 defeat at Plainmoor on Saturday, when Chelmsford City FC ran riot against the Gulls. That loss proved damaging despite Torquay currently sitting fourth in the table. The result left them ten points behind league leaders Dorking Wanderers, increasing pressure at a crucial stage of the campaign.
Warnock, who celebrated his 77th birthday in December, is not thought to be under consideration for the role on a long-term basis. Instead, he will step into the technical area in an interim capacity for Tuesday’s encounter while the club assesses its next move.
Although this return to matchday management may have caught some by surprise, Warnock is no stranger to the club’s inner workings. He has maintained an association with Torquay since May 2024, when he accepted a position as the club’s football advisor. That role has seen him contribute behind the scenes, offering experience and guidance rather than taking direct control of first-team affairs.
Torquay confirmed the managerial change in an official statement, expressing gratitude toward Wotton for his efforts. The club acknowledged his dedication, professionalism, and commitment during his tenure, thanking him for the work he carried out both on the pitch and away from it. They also extended their best wishes for his future career.
The statement added that Warnock would lead the side for the upcoming clash with Farnborough, with further clarification regarding interim or permanent arrangements to follow in due course.
For Warnock, the fixture represents another chapter in a managerial career that has spanned decades and included numerous clubs across the English football pyramid. His previous spell in charge of Middlesbrough began in June 2020, when he was appointed to steady the ship on Teesside. Over the course of his tenure at the Riverside Stadium, he took charge of 75 matches, guiding the team to 29 victories.
His time at Boro came to an end in November 2021, when the club decided to make a change and appointed Chris Wilder as his successor. Following his departure from Middlesbrough, Warnock continued his managerial journey with spells at Huddersfield Town and Aberdeen FC, further adding to his extensive résumé.
Despite his age, Warnock has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to return to the touchline when called upon. His wealth of experience, particularly in navigating high-pressure situations, could prove valuable for Torquay as they look to regain momentum after a disappointing setback.
The Gulls remain in contention near the top of the National League South table, but the recent defeat and the gap to Dorking Wanderers have heightened the urgency surrounding their promotion push. Turning to a seasoned figure like Warnock, even on a short-term basis, suggests the club is eager to stabilise performances quickly and maintain its competitive position.
While it remains unclear how long Warnock’s interim involvement will last, his presence is certain to draw attention. Supporters will be keen to see whether his trademark leadership style can inspire an immediate response from the squad.
For now, the focus is squarely on Tuesday evening’s encounter at Plainmoor. Warnock’s task will be to lift morale, organise the team, and secure a positive result against Farnborough as Torquay aim to keep pace with the division’s frontrunners.
Whether this appearance marks a brief cameo or the start of another extended stint in management remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that Neil Warnock’s return adds an intriguing subplot to Torquay United’s season.
