Manchester United have been so active in the transfer window that it’s easy to forget that the “official start” of the next season isn’t until July 1.

That’s when the bank accounts are reset, and the season preparations begin, which Manchester United has guaranteed will include not one, not two, but four new players.

Matheus Cunha is the headliner, having arrived early from Wolves, and United hopes Bryan Mbeumo will join him before July 7, when the squad returns for pre-season.

Enzo Kana-Biyik will join the senior duo, while Fabrizio Romano has released a photo of a fourth player set to be at the club ‘next week’.

Fabrizio Romano presents the latest Diego Leon photo.

United’s recent high-profile signing and ongoing transfer controversy have caused Diego Leon’s deal to be overlooked.

Leon, unlike Marcelo, is not your typical 18-year-old Paraguayan player due to his all-action game and athletic prowess.

He has played for Paraguay U20s, Cerro Porteno in the Copa Libertadores, and is considered a rising star in world football.

Leon joined United in January, but stayed in England until the end of the season, contrary to previous reports that he would arrive on July 1.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has posted the latest photo of the wonderkid, stating that he is set to travel to England ‘next week’ to begin his career as a Manchester United player.

Diego Leon’s prospects at Manchester United

Leon is in the sweet spot of a guy who is raw, like Sekou Kone when he signed, but comes from a far higher level of play.

Most significantly, he already has a competitive advantage over most youth prospects since he is physically prepared, which is something that most young players struggle with when breaking through.

Leon is expected to play in pre-season against Premier League opponents, providing him with an opportunity to impress.

If he does, and there is no reason to believe he will not, he should be promoted to the first team and compete with Harry Amass for the backup left-back position.

Given Patrick Dorgu’s experience on the right, Ruben Amorim will gain tactical flexibility and rotational ability at a position that requires players to perform at peak intensity at all times.

Then, playing the occasional game with the U21s will allow Leon to hone the technical aspects of his game under less scrutiny.

It’s as good a time as any to break through at United because the club is in the midst of a transformation, with no position secure.

Leon can build out a niche for himself if he keeps doing the right things.
