Fabrizio Romano says Man United have a big Tottenham regret this season

Fabrizio Romano has said that there are already regrets at Manchester United about their decision to end Sergio Reguilon’s loan spell last month after Luke Shaw suffered another injury.

Reguilon moved to Old Trafford on loan last summer after failing to impress Ange Postecoglou during pre-season.

The left-back made nine appearances across all competitions for Manchester United, despite the injuries to Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, giving a decent account of himself.

However, Erik Ten Hag’s men decided to call time on the Spaniard’s spell at the club last month, with the 27-year-old subsequently joining Brentford on loan.

Reguilon has made a decent start to his spell at the Gtech Community Stadium and reports over recent weeks indicate that Tottenham expect plenty of clubs to vie for the former Real Madrid man’s signature next summer (Estadio Deportivo).

Man United regret not keeping Sergio Reguilon

After Shaw broke down with another injury, which is expected to put him out of action for the foreseeable future, Romano insisted that many at Man Utd will be ruing their decision to cut short the Spurs man’s stay.

The Italian journalist said on his YouTube channel (as relayed by Football Transfers): “Luke Shaw will be out for the next months; the expectation is to see him back for the final games of the season.

“[Man Utd] decided to go for Reguilon because Tottenham accepted putting a break clause into the loan deal, and they only wanted Reguilon for six months.

“They thought that Shaw and Tyrell Malacia would be ready in January and so they wouldn’t need Reguilon anymore. Then, in January, Man Utd decided to activate the break clause despite Shaw and Malacia not being 100 per cent fit.

“For Man Utd, it’s a regret because they had the opportunity to continue with Reguilon and now they don’t have a fit left-back in their squad. This is one of the things that INEOS want to avoid in the future. These kind of things have to change.”

Tottenham will be quite pleased that Man Utd did end the loan as Reguilon is now getting regular starts at Brentford and his recent displays at the West London club will add a few million to his transfer value at the end of the season.
