Jayson Tatum thanks everyone for their support during recovery, but one person stands out the most.
Jayson Tatum made sure to recognize many people who helped him return from a long and demanding recovery process, but he emphasized that one individual stood out above the rest. The Boston Celtics star highlighted the crucial role played by his longtime trainer Nick Sang, whose dedication and constant presence were central to Tatum’s return to the court after months away from competition.
In the days leading up to his long-awaited return, Tatum chose to address his teammates and coaches directly. The moment came one day before he stepped back onto the floor for his first game of the season, ending a lengthy absence that lasted 298 days. Before playing again, he wanted to make sure everyone around him knew how thankful he was for the support that allowed him to reach the point where returning to basketball was possible.
During that address, Tatum first directed his appreciation toward his teammates. While he had been unable to play for most of the season, the Celtics had continued to perform at a high level and secured the second seed in the Eastern Conference standings. Watching their success from the sidelines inspired Tatum rather than discouraged him.
After his return game, he described the current Celtics roster as one of the most entertaining teams to watch in the entire league. Observing their chemistry, energy, and competitive spirit motivated him throughout his recovery period.
Tatum explained that the way his teammates approached the game filled him with excitement and pushed him to keep working through the difficult rehabilitation process. Their enthusiasm for competing made him want to be part of the action again as soon as possible.
“I wanted to be part of that,” he said while reflecting on the group’s style of play and shared determination.
Even though he could not participate in games for months, Tatum made a point of remaining closely connected with the team. He traveled with the Celtics whenever possible and attended nearly every film session, practice, shootaround, and game throughout the season. Whether the team was playing at home or on the road, he tried to stay involved.
Maintaining that presence helped him preserve a sense of belonging during a period that can often feel isolating for injured athletes. Being around his teammates allowed him to stay mentally engaged with the team while he focused on recovering physically.
Tatum admitted that dealing with a serious injury and going through rehabilitation can be extremely lonely. Injured players often find themselves separated from the regular activities of the team, even though that separation is not intentional.
Because he was unable to practice or participate in games for a significant period of time, he frequently found himself working alone. While the team practiced on the court, he was typically in the weight room completing specialized workouts designed for his recovery.
That difference in routine created moments where he felt somewhat removed from the rest of the group. Still, he emphasized how much it meant to him that the team welcomed him around as often as possible.
He said traveling with the team, attending games, and being on the plane helped him feel like he was still truly part of the Celtics despite not being able to contribute on the floor. The consistent support from teammates helped him remain positive during the long rehabilitation process.
Tatum also used his speech to thank the coaching staff for their efforts throughout his recovery. Several members of the coaching team spent extra time assisting him with workouts and conditioning drills after practices had ended.
Assistant coaches such as Amile Jefferson and Tony Dobbins were among those who helped him stay active and rebuild his strength while he worked toward returning to full basketball activity.
Before he was cleared to play five-on-five with teammates again, Tatum often took part in informal pickup games with members of the coaching staff. Those sessions helped him gradually regain his conditioning and comfort on the court.
He expressed deep gratitude for the time and energy the coaches invested in his recovery. Their willingness to extend their workdays in order to assist him with rehabilitation exercises and basketball drills meant a great deal to him.
Tatum explained that he simply wanted everyone in the room to understand that they had all contributed in some way to his ability to reach this important milestone.
Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla later spoke about Tatum’s remarks and said he felt proud listening to the star forward reflect on his journey.
Mazzulla noted that the experience appeared to have helped Tatum grow not only as a player but also as a person.
However, among the many individuals Tatum thanked, he made it clear that one person played the most significant role in helping him recover. That person was his personal trainer, Nick Sang.
Sang has been working with Tatum and the Celtics organization since 2017, building a strong professional relationship with the All-Star forward over the years. During the recovery process, Sang became the driving force behind Tatum’s rehabilitation program.
Tatum explained that Sang had been by his side constantly throughout the entire journey. From the moment the injury occurred, the trainer remained involved in every stage of the process.
According to Tatum, there had not been a 48-hour period over the past 10 months when he had not seen Sang. That level of dedication demonstrated just how committed Sang was to helping him return to peak form.
Tatum said he felt extremely fortunate to have someone as selfless and hardworking as Sang guiding him through the recovery process.
Beyond their professional relationship, Sang has also become one of Tatum’s closest friends. That personal connection made the experience even more meaningful.
Tatum explained that knowing Sang genuinely cared about him as a person — not just as an athlete — gave him additional confidence throughout the rehabilitation period. Having someone invested in both his health and his overall well-being made the demanding recovery journey easier to endure.
The rehabilitation process began almost immediately after Tatum underwent surgery in May. From that point forward, Sang played a central role in designing and overseeing every step of the recovery plan.
Throughout the offseason, Sang traveled with Tatum and ensured that his training schedule remained consistent regardless of location. He also devoted significant time to researching the best possible methods for recovering from an Achilles tendon injury.
Tatum described how Sang reached out to specialists, studied rehabilitation techniques, and carefully evaluated every detail of the recovery plan to make sure nothing was overlooked.
He said Sang worked tirelessly to ensure that the rehabilitation program followed the best available medical guidance and avoided any shortcuts that could slow progress or increase the risk of setbacks.
In addition to managing the technical aspects of recovery, Sang also helped keep Tatum motivated on a daily basis. He pushed him during difficult moments and held him accountable whenever the process became mentally challenging.
Tatum admitted there were times when the journey felt overwhelming or when he doubted himself. In those moments, Sang’s encouragement and persistence helped him stay focused on the ultimate goal.
When Tatum finally returned to action after nearly 10 months away from competition, he delivered an impressive performance. In a 120–100 win over the Dallas Mavericks, he recorded 15 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists in just 27 minutes on the floor.
During those minutes, the Celtics outscored Dallas by 20 points, highlighting his immediate impact upon returning to the lineup.
Even so, Tatum emphasized that the recovery journey is not completely finished. While stepping onto the parquet floor at TD Garden marked a major milestone, he knows there is still more work to do in the months ahead.
Nevertheless, the moment represented something he had been dreaming about throughout the long months of rehabilitation.
Looking back on the process, Tatum again credited Sang for playing a central role in helping him reach that point.
He expressed deep appreciation for everything his trainer had done over the past year, explaining that he could never fully repay Sang for the effort and dedication he showed every single day.
According to Tatum, Sang’s relentless support was a major reason he was able to recover as quickly as he did and finally return to the game he loves.
