Lindsey Vonn is contemplating a comeback to skiing despite requiring five surgeries after her crash.
Lindsey Vonn is still contemplating a return to competitive skiing, despite enduring a devastating injury that required five separate surgeries following her crash at the Winter Olympics.
At 41 years old, Vonn continues to show the same resilience and determination that defined her career, refusing to completely rule out the possibility of competing again. Her recovery journey has been extremely challenging, with the severity of her injuries nearly resulting in the loss of her leg.
The incident occurred during her first competitive run at the 2026 Winter Olympics, representing Team USA. Just 13 seconds into the run, disaster struck as she suffered a snapped fibula along with a broken ankle, abruptly ending her participation in the event.

The injuries were significant and required immediate and extensive medical attention. Since the crash, Vonn has undergone five separate surgical procedures in an effort to repair the damage and stabilize her leg. Despite the seriousness of the situation, her recovery has been progressing remarkably well, with steady improvements being reported.
Even so, the idea of returning to competitive skiing has raised concerns among those closest to her. Members of her family have reportedly been uneasy about the prospect, given the risks involved and the toll her body has already endured over the years. However, Vonn herself has not dismissed the idea and continues to entertain the possibility.
Speaking openly about her situation during an interview with Craig Melvin, a co-anchor on Today, on April 7, Vonn shared insight into her mindset. She explained that her deep love for ski racing remains a powerful motivating factor and admitted that she feels a sense of unfinished business after not being able to complete what she had hoped would be her final Olympic appearance.
When asked directly whether she was considering a comeback, Vonn acknowledged that she was, even though her family may not fully support the idea. She admitted that her perspective is still shaped by the disappointment of how her Olympic journey ended, and that she has yet to fully process everything that has happened.
Vonn described feeling isolated during her recovery period, noting that she has been largely confined and unable to fully engage with the outside world. This isolation has contributed to her difficulty in moving past the abrupt ending to her Olympic dream, as her focus remains fixed on what could have been.
She went on to explain that regaining a sense of normalcy—being able to walk freely, spend time in public, and return to everyday life—may help her gain a clearer perspective on her future. At this stage, however, she admitted that she is not yet in a position to make any definitive decisions regarding whether she will return to the sport.
Prior to the crash, Vonn had already demonstrated extraordinary determination simply by competing in the Winter Olympics. Her participation alone was considered a remarkable achievement, as she had suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee just one week before the event.
Despite that setback, she pushed through and made it to the starting gate, showcasing her unwavering commitment and passion for skiing. Unfortunately, her comeback was cut short in dramatic and painful fashion when the crash occurred, leaving her writhing in agony on the slopes as her Olympic campaign came to an abrupt halt.
The emotional impact of the incident has been profound. Reflecting on the moment, Vonn acknowledged the heartbreak of realizing that her Olympic dream was over. The abrupt nature of the ending made it even more difficult to accept, especially given the immense effort she had put into preparing for the event.
She expressed deep disappointment that her career may not conclude in the way she had envisioned. For Vonn, the Olympics represented an opportunity to bring her journey full circle and end on a high note, surrounded by the sport she loves.
Instead, she now faces uncertainty about what lies ahead. While her physical recovery continues, the mental and emotional aspects of coming to terms with her situation remain ongoing challenges.
Vonn also spoke about how much joy she had been experiencing leading up to the Olympics. She had been enjoying her return to skiing, embracing the competition, and reconnecting with the passion that has driven her throughout her career. That sense of fulfillment made the sudden end to her comeback all the more painful.
Now, as she continues her rehabilitation, Vonn finds herself at a crossroads. The possibility of returning to competitive skiing is still on the table, but it is far from certain. Much will depend on her recovery, her physical condition, and her ability to regain confidence on the slopes.
For the time being, she remains focused on healing and regaining her independence. As she gradually returns to everyday life, she hopes to gain clarity about her future and whether another chapter in her storied career is possible.
Ultimately, Vonn’s situation highlights both her incredible resilience and the difficult decisions faced by elite athletes dealing with serious injuries. Whether or not she makes a return, her legacy in the sport is already firmly established, and her determination to keep pushing forward continues to inspire many.
