Man United could be obliged to sign a goalkeeper after Andre Onana’s injury
Ruben Amorim’s summer plans were given a setback when first-choice stopper sustained a hamstring injury, making him a doubt for the start of the season.
Manchester United have been dealt a major setback as André Onana suffered a hamstring injury, putting his participation in their pre-season tour in jeopardy.
Manager Ruben Amorim is considering buying another goalkeeper before the Premier League season begins, after an early assessment indicated the goalkeeper would miss six to eight weeks of play.
That would leave the 29-year-old, who developed the ailment this week when players returned to training at United’s Carrington headquarters, on the verge of missing the season-opener against Arsenal on Sunday, August 17.
Onana will undergo additional testing to determine a more specific timetable for his recuperation, with United hoping he will be ready to start the season.
They have Altay Bayındır as No. 2 and Tom Heaton as backup after signing a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford. Czech goalkeeper Radek Vitek, 21, is also highly regarded at United and has recently returned from a successful loan spell with Austrian club BW Linz, putting him in contention for a spot on the club’s pre-season tour.
Following their match against Leeds United in Sweden next weekend, United will travel to the United States to face West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton on the east coast. They also have a home friendly against Fiorentina on August 9 to prepare for the upcoming season.
United must decide whether to look for cover or competition for Onana, since a number of goalkeepers were watched during Amorim’s tenure as manager.
Onana has made several high-profile mistakes since joining Inter Milan for £47.2 million in 2023 under Erik ten Hag, the Dutch coach who previously worked with the Cameroonian goalkeeper at Ajax.

Amorim dropped him in April following a poor performance against Lyon in the Europa League, then rotated him on the final day of the Premier League season. Bayındır was fortunate in the victory versus Aston Villa, as a goal coming from his mistake was ruled out due to a VAR technicality.
United has been connected with Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, although a deal is not currently in the works due to the clubs’ differing valuations of the Argentine World Cup champion. They have also scouted the highly rated Senne Lammens, 23, from Antwerp.
Bryan Mbeumo, a Brentford forward, is set to join at United this week before the squad goes on tour, with a breakthrough in negotiations expected soon. The Cameroonian international would join Matheus Cunha and Diego León, both 18, as summer recruits.

The Premier League market is competitive for goalkeepers.
There has already been a lot of movement among goalkeepers this summer, with Kepa Arrizabalaga moving to Arsenal, leaving Bournemouth looking for a replacement. They have signed Djordje Petrovic from Chelsea, after Sunderland also bid for the Serbian international.
Wolves and Sunderland will evaluate prospective recruits in the position, and a number of goalkeepers may consider moves. Aaron Ramsdale, for example, who was relegated with Southampton, may boost his chances of making the World Cup next summer by remaining in the Premier League. Sam Johnstone, another England goalkeeper, had limited playing time for Wolves last season.
Newcastle are interested in signing Burnley’s James Trafford, but Nick Pope want to stay and battle for his place despite greater competition. Martínez, 32, has also attracted interest from Saudi Arabia.

Last season, Premier League clubs dispatched scouts to watch Lille’s Lucas Chevalier and Parma’s Zion Suzuki. They are among a number of highly regarded foreign goalkeepers. Barcelona has signed Joan García from Espanyol, a 24-year-old who Arsenal had previously targeted.
Amorim wants to have his squad in place before heading to the United States for the preseason tour. In that regard, it is not ideal for his starting goalkeeper not to be practicing for the season alongside the rest of his backline.
On the other side, Onana’s performance has been one of United’s key issues over the last year as they have dropped down the table. Some fans have advocated for a change in goalie, citing Onana’s hazardous footwork and poor positioning in goal, which allows the opposition to shoot.
