Manchester United were recently involved in a drawn-out saga as they attempted to reach an agreement with Brentford on a contract to recruit Bryan Mbeumo.

Mbeumo decided to join United in early June, but he had to wait until this week to make the transfer to Old Trafford, as the Bees negotiated a contract for more than £70 million.

The negotiations with the London outfit were extremely challenging for the Mancunians. According to The Peoples Person, they raised Mbeumo’s fee during negotiations and attempted to steer him towards Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur instead.

United may have to reopen discussions with Brentford because they have set their sights on one of the best football minds at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Manchester United are interested in Stephen Torpey.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United are considering appointing Brentford academy director Stephen Torpey to succeed Nick Cox.

In June, The Peoples Person reported that Cox has decided to become Everton’s technical director. He is now serving a 12-month notice period with United.

The Red Devils are apparently “undertaking an extensive search to find the ‘best-in-class’ replacement for Cox”. However, there is a “desire to move quickly.”

Torpey, who formerly worked at Manchester City with United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, was appointed Brentford’s academy director in January 2024.

He’s “credited with helping City implement a Barcelona-style coaching system.” Brentford hired him to “build their academy from scratch and deliver category one academy status.”

Manchester United is committed to enhance its academy.

Ineos has placed a strong priority on developing United’s junior ranks.

Last season, United brought Arsenal academy standouts Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven to Old Trafford. Ruben Amorim has already established Heaven as a regular fixture.

This summer, United beat PSG to the acquisition of French attacker Enzo Kana-Biyik. They also beat off interest from City to recruit highly regarded Southampton defender Harley Emsden-James.
