The American Alpine skiing great had a promising start in her first Super G race in two years before missing the penultimate gate in Switzerland on Sunday (December 14).

Mikaela Shiffrin’s return to Super G started on a promising note but ended with a whimper when she pulled out of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup race in St Moritz with a DNF on Sunday (14 December).

The U.S. ski racing superstar was competing in her first Super G since December 2023 in Val d’Isère, hoping to put herself to the test.

Shiffrin appeared focused at the gate as she began 31st on the Corviglia piste, where she had previously won a downhill and two Super G races.

Despite a little misstep early on, the 30-year-old appeared to be in command. She trailed New Zealand leader Alice Robinson by milliseconds at first time checks, but gained confidence as she approached the bottom of the course.

The two-time Olympic champion successfully maneuvered the Rominger jump and appeared to be on track for a respectable tenth-place finish until she missed the penultimate gate, resulting in a ‘did not finish’ under her name. She appeared defeated on the other side of the finish line.

Robinson won her maiden Super G on the World Cup circuit and moved ahead of Shiffrin in the overall season standings, with only 64 points separating the two.

The race was also the first World Cup meeting between American superstars Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn since 2019. Vonn finished fourth, capping up a spectacular weekend of racing that included winning the season-opening downhill race on Friday and taking second place on Saturday.

Shiffrin will return to her comfort zone in Courchevel on Tuesday, looking for her fifth consecutive slalom victory and fourth of the 2025-26 World Cup season.
